So we have chaos with unprecedented turnover in the Whitehouse, most Republicans disapproving of the tarrifs, tweets that show a President that appears mentally unstable, affairs by Trump though years ago show his infidelity, nothing accomplished on immigration or DACA, despite all this his approval especially amongst Republican jumps 7% according to a CNN poll. Personally I  disapprove stronger than I ever have. What is going on? Are people not paying attention? Watching too much Fox News?

People are dumb.

 
Republican poll respondents are still voting with their hearts. They want Trump to succeed so badly, that the slightest bit of good news (a partial stock market rebound) is treated like Truman dropping the bomb on Japan.

At this point Republicans are like soccer moms cheering for their uncoordinated benchwarming child. You cheer every kick, no matter how small, because you know deep down that the goals are never going to come.

80% of Americans are living their lives, enjoying these times of prosperity and burgeoning world peace. When people are able to take care of themselves and provide for their families they tune out the noise. They have accepted that politics and media serve only to divide and they make the conscious decision to rise above it all.

The other 20% has been engulfed in hatred and conspiracy. They spend their days fretting over Russian boogeymen and decades old sexual escapades of private citizens. They are incapable of accepting reality so they squeeze the past until it drips a cancerous funk all over themselves and the people around them. They huddle together on low rent cable networks and anonymous internet sites and feed off of each other's misery and fear.

Sixteen months have passed since they were told by their fellow citizens that they were on the wrong side of history. Yet they wake up each day, like groundhog day, thinking that it was all a big mistake and any minute she will take Herr rightful place in the Oval Office.

These are some of the greatest times our nation has seen in decades, if not longer. Trump has only been in office a little over a year, but he has fulfilled his promise to Make America Great Again.

You can either enjoy the ride or be a miserable human. The beauty of it is that the choice is yours.

Christian nationalism really has very little to do with Christianity. The Christian right uses Christianity as a cudgel to beat down members of other tribes. Their acceptance of Christianity is much more powerful as a tribal marker than as an actual set of beliefs. That becomes obvious when you see how quickly they jettison those beliefs to support someone like Trump, and how they ignore the clear commands in the Bible to feed the poor and treat immigrants like our own family. There is no coherent ideology here; it’s tribalism all the way down.

Man, you could have said the same thing for the last 5 years but Trump told me America was in the toilet.  Now we're in times of prosperity and burgeoning world peace?  When we no longer lead the world and our allies have moved on without us?  In fact, the EU were the ones who coordinated the recent response to Russia, not the US.  But hey, we live in the land of milk and honey again all of a sudden apparently.

He also wanted to bring back Flynn.  He doesn’t care about character at all...he cares about loyalty and if you’re loyal to him and do what he says when he says it and he’ll support you regardless of your moral character.

As always, look at the polls in the aggregate. Individual polls jump around, that's why they have that margin for error.

Also, while most of Bozeman's post is troll-y nonsense, there's some truth to it. A lot of people don't watch the news, follow the issues of the day, or trouble themselves with the details of scandal and corruption. Those people evaluate the president's performance largely based on the state of the economy. You can go back and find plenty of examples- Clinton had great approval ratings during the Lewinsky mess because the economy was booming. George H Bush's presidency was boring, professional and largely scandal-free (he had a 73% approval rating at this point of his presidency) but then recession hit, his numbers tanked and his couldn't win reelection.

The flip side of it is that the people who do pay attention are the ones that turn out for midterms. That's why the Dems got killed in 2010 even though Obama did a nearly miraculous job turning around the economy around quickly after the '08 financial crisis, and lost another 13 seats in 2014 even though the economy was in great shape by then.

I'd guess it's the chilling effect.  If you're not a citizen, you're going to duck the census rather than acknowledge your status out of fear of deportation.  Those that duck it it aren't going to be in either sub-total.

doesn't really make sense but apparently it happens....I mentioned that because I heard of a guy that was here like 30 years, served in the military and ICE escorted him out of the country...pretty disgusting that they can fight and die for our country..something our president refused to do and they are somehow criminals that must be removed from our country.

Since they raised it..does it matter to the average Joe if it was misappropriated?   It would be different if they had gotten it from the taxpayers but wonder if it’s worth causing a stink since it was (likely) private money donated to the inauguration committee

What I love about Trump and the Trump team is they are just making themselves, richer and richer while the people sucked into his cult of personality just continue to praise him.  At this point he's pretty much a televangelist.

I will give him credit there. He is an absolute brilliant businessman. Also knows how to be a puppeteer with the less-intelligent members of our country and make them follow him like a puppy dog.  He can take away their healthcare and they will praise him. He can give himself tax cuts that make him millions and millions and they think he's doing it 'for his people'. He steals money from all of us by having all the government paid functions at his properties and they couldn't care less. He hates Muslims, Mexicans, and blacks and that's all that matters. He's their guy.

Dial it back, Nancy. The citizenship question was a vital part of the census for many years. Bringing it back won't cause a Constitutional crisis.
