The problem is that we’re currently undergoing a populist wave- we seem to have one every 40-50 years though there’s no set time period. Whenever we have this kind of wave, all the rules get thrown out, and chaos is the result. Elites like the Kochs have no more power during the chaos than the rest of us do.

The Koch brothers, and a handful of other ultra wealthy folks, are the ones using this populism to serve their own interests. If the Koch brothers and other major wealthy donors don't like the current demagogue, they'll just find another one to take his place. And the credulous populist followers will glom on to the new demagogue and denigrate the old  one as directed. The Kochs, Fox news - they're directing the chaos TIm. Because it makes them money - lots of it.

I recognize this line of thinking is very popular, particularly with liberals. In political science it's known as the "power elite" theory. But I strongly disagree with it. I don't think chaos can be directed.

As I see it: the public in general, over the last 100 years or so, have turned against the "pure" capitalism of the Kochs and their allies, which forced them, in order to maintain power, to seek more and more populist allies. But this was a devil's bargain, and now they are going to pay the price.

There were 3 daily press briefings in July. There were 5 daily press briefings in June. 

More like the “couple of times a month” press briefings. The supporters of this administration should be embarrassed by that lack of accountability.

Ironic that these people are so angry at the press for lying.  I guess they never fact-check anything that Donald Trump says or tweets.

 
Just heard a Trump supporter on the radio from a clip from last night.

Reporter:  So you don't know anything about the candidate Trump is endorsing, but you are going to vote for him?

TS: "Yes, I believe Trump, everything he says is true"

I don't think people fundamentally understand how dumb and malleable most of the population is.  We have been making movies for decades about just this thing happening.  A psychopath running for office on nothing but lies and a significant portion of the population lining up behind him because he says 'he'll save them from 'insert bogeyman here''.  These people are not going to vote differently no matter what happens.  He speaks to them the way they crave.  He's the daddy they never had that will protect them from the world and when he's not protecting them he'll make sure the people not like them are punished.  

The USA used to have two parties that had intellectual differences.  That is 100% gone now.  The Republicans don't even try (I"m sure there are some) to show intelligence.  It's about supporting the machine and burning everything down that they can.

I hate to have to agree with this. The argument put forth in another thread was "go outside, the sun is shining on America" and some other subjective, non-quantifiable words, and something about the economy. Which has been going well for the last several years. So it's really about nothing, other than it's not Hillary, who seems to be the boogeyman in the above example.

On a related note the Trump rallies are disappointing and somewhat unnerving, the level of vitriol from the people there is disturbing. And with the kids at these things and the things being said, it's really just an absolute mess.

Is it possible that this is just the hot media panic of the day and that there aren't actually that many of these Qanon freaks?  We've got what, a dozen Trump supporters here at least, and many more who tolerate/defend supporting Trump? But we've only got one Qanon type.

I don't think it's a coincidence that we're talking about it today, the morning after a Trump rally in Tampa. The article quotes Ben Collins describing it as "Pizzagate on bath salts," which frankly just sounds like someone describing Tampa.

In a twisted way, he's right. That's exactly what Donald Trump does. He catches himself sometimes. Usually something like "Not many people know this, but the Solar System has 8 planets. Who knew?" after years of him saying the Solar System revolves around the Earth. That was the truth as he understood it.

I have no problem with that defense. Just call it what it is then:  Trump is extremely ignorant and is either incapable or unwilling to learn things that are very important for being President.

Whether one belives that or one believes that Trump is a liar, either one is a very good reason why Trump needs to gtfo of the White House.
