The Wire (1 Viewer)

Finished it. :sadbanana: I want more, dammit!

Oh well, on to Game of Thrones, I suppose. :kicksrock:
If you haven't seen GoT, you're in for a treat there too.

Put The Wire in your back pocket for a rewatch next year. Like bigmarc said, it's just as good - if not better - the second time around.

Game of Thrones is so much better than The Wire.  On a scale of 16 to 73, with 16 being the best and 73 being the worst I give The Wire a 67.  GOT is a 19
Totally. On a scale from a Honda to a wallaby, Game of Thrones is like fighting a dozen five-year olds and The Wire is Marshall Falk's cancerous testicle.

Absurdist similes and metaphors don't lie.

2 most underrated characters: Valchek and old-faced Andre

Assigned a rookie!  a broad, no less!  As lead detective.

and season 4 is the best.  no more ####### around.

This show was great, don't get me wrong. But it's not as re-watchable as The Sopranos and other shows.

I've had the box DVD set sitting here and I haven't touched them in years.

I think I am the only person in the world who watched this series and didn't love it to pieces.  Literally everyone I talked to raved about it, and I lost interest somewhere late in S1 and never returned to it.

Worst character by far: Colicchio

most perplexing character: the woman who worked in Major Crimes listening and deciphering the calls.  She got a lot of screen time for someone whose name I'm still not sure of.  Kima says it in the episode that Cheryl kicks her out, but I can't even remember.

Bunny and Hampsterdam is what REALLY hooked me.  Keep going.

You aren't the only one.  I tried to keep watching based on this thread and I had to shut it down sometime in season 4.  It was a miracle I lasted that long.

I can't remember the name of a single character on the show. That is never a good sign.

You were a braver man than I.  No way I would have lasted 3+ seasons given how little I was enjoying the show.

I don't think I have never seen any one rank season 4 last.  What about that season did you not like?
Not enough white people.

No, I was actually just drunk and ####### around.  re-watching the series and got into season 5 and remembered again how annoying it is.

i continue to appreciate season 2 more each time, find 3 a little less enjoyable.  4 is still the best and just the most complete all the way around.

Went to Wire quizzo tonight.  Walked away the winner.  Came in second initially, but challenged an answer in the last round where I wrote squeak, but they thought it said squash.  That put me in a tie and I won the tiebreaker question of closest to  the date of the pilot.  The game is the game.

you come at the king you best not miss

yeah, we have been doing a rewatch for a few months and up to the end of season 4.

still so great
I finally got my buddy on it who is the type of viewer who loves Sons of Anarchy type stuff.

He told me it was slow so far. I told him it's not a show about crime, it's a show about characters. I think that's important to remember. The way you felt when you saw Dukie becoming a junkie, or Kennard shooting Omar, or even Cheese getting shot. Told my buddy if he keeps that in mind, he'll enjoy it way more.

I'm just going to ramble on in this thread about scenes, characters, etc. If no one minds. Please feel free to jump into discussion with opinions....

Topic 1: - Michael Leehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJnotGq3AQs

Michael Lee - Less talked about overall for historians of the show for sure but he had the same heart as Omar. Remember when Omar killed Stringer and he put his gun on the innocent construction worker but didn't pull it? Omar had a conscious and a code. Michael Lee had the same when Partlows people went in to kill June Bugg's family and the kid ran out of the back and he didn't pull because he knew he was innocent. In the end he becomes Omar. And wait, he of all people is the one who killed Snoop? Crazy. This was my favorite character of all time. He had the heart wrenching moments (giving his little brother up to a foster mom) and the awesome moments which led to his molester's beating from Partlow and beating the #### out of Kennard (a little kid that DID deserve it).

He also stood up for his friends. He stood up to an outnumbered group of bullies when they confronted his friend Randy about being a snitch. He always stood up for Dukie. He was the one boy on the block who didn't take Marlo's school clothes money and that's what won him over in Partlow and Marlo's eyes. If there ever was a character that had a code in the show beyond Omar, Chris Lee was the one. He was a better version of Omar because we got to see him develop in a way we could imagine Omar would have before we met Omar.

His actions also led Dukie into the next Bubbles which was probably one of the saddest moments of the show.

Best quote: "I ain't payin' you to be my mother."

Next up: Slim Charles was underrated

Good stuff here. Michael is a character - like most of boys in the series - that shows the interconnected nature between what happens in the different plots, characters, and story arcs. They are the lifeblood of the series.

I like Slim Charles but I felt his acting was pretty poor. He had some cool lines but the delivery was wonky for me. When he gives the “that’s the thing about the old days, they’re the old days” or whatever it was, I grimace a little bit.

Well that was my next post yet to come after we discuss Michael Lee a bit

Or Bubbles hanging himself. On first watch, I really thought they were killing him off.
The Bubbles hanging scene was rough as f. I think the show did an amazing job of ending it quickly but that's the last time we saw him before living in his sister's basement which turned into the downside of his character arc. Honestly, the most predictable part of the series was him having Sherrod end up dying from those hot shots so it did not resonate with me as much. You could tell that episode when he laid down to sleep that was going to be the start of the next.

Honestly I’ve never thought to order them as they’re all so good.

A bit surprised though to see four rated at one given that was such a little dose of McNulty.
I think most people would say 4 is the crown jewel of the series.  It's what got me hooked after passing on early seasons when they first aired on HBO.   While some argument can be made for Season 3 as being the best, I think we can all agree that Season 5 is trash and it had plenty of McNulty.

Hard for me to say b/c I loved all five.

Gun to my head I think I’d go season two.

Season 2 is like fine wine to me.  If you only watched The Wire once or twice, it might be your least favorite.  After that, you start realizing its greatness.  It may be my third favorite season after 4 and 3 which are tough to beat.

Same here. Wasn’t my initial favorite but upon the third time through I really appreciated the dockworker struggle plot line (even with Ziggy).
