There are 6 current head coaches to lead a team to a super bowl victory.

Bill Belichick

Tom Coughlin

Mike McCarthy

Sean Payton

Mike Shanahan

Mike Tomlin

Rank their quarterbacks

Tom Brady

Drew Brees

Rex Grossman

Eli Manning

Ben Roethlisberger

Aaron Rodgers

Don't try to read anything into this. I'm not sure what it means. Just an interesting observation that could offer insight.

Grossman obviously stands out as the only stinker in that bunch.

There is obviously a correlation between long time success as a head coach and having a very good/great QB.

Brady

Rodgers

Brees

Big Ben

Eli

Grossman

Though I think 10 years from now, Rodgers will widely be considered tops on this list.

It does makes me wonder. A lot of people probably think Shanahan is overrated. But he's also been saddled with some poor quarterbacking since Elway retired in 1998. Maybe he's just been unlucky compared to his peers. If he did have one of the other QBs on this list, perhaps he'd have several more rings.

Well, he did get the Broncos to the AFC title game in 2005 with Jake Plummer being their starting QB (and they were the Vegas favorite to win it all when it was down to four teams), and he had a winning record in Denver post-Elway, so I'd say he has proven that he can win without having a stud QB. His tenure in Washington has been rough thus far, however.

I don't know how I feel about it. I don't watch his team nearly enough to know really.

Since Elway...Seasons coached- 12Post season appearances- 4Post season wins- 1Post season record 1-4not very inspiring

Lack of postseason success over that time period is definitely a black mark on him, but 91-69 in the 10 post-Elway years in Denver is pretty darn good considering his starting QBs over that span were Brian Griese, Jake Plummer and a young Jay Cutler. Shall I post Bill Belichick's record and postseason success as a head coach without Tom Brady? Okay. Bill Belichick is 52-62 as a head coach in games not started by Tom Brady. And he has 1 postseason wins in those 7 full seasons. So, even with the last two years in Washington dragging his W/L record down, Shanny still has a better W/L record as a head coach than Belichick in games not started by their respective HOF QBs. And that is not even factoring in the five games the 1998 Denver Broncos won with Bubby Brister as the starting QB when Elway was hurt.
