One time at a local taco place I go to all the time I noticed there was a new employee on the line. After I ordered she turned from the counter and walked over to the garbage behind the register and used her glove-covered hand to tamp down whatever was in there to make more room. She then made my burrito while wearing the same glove. I was so shocked I just paid and left with my mouth open. I sent the owner an email. He sent me a thank you reply. I never saw that employee again. I still feel kinda bad...

We all want to know, DID YOU EAT THE BURRITO???

Maybe some of these employees who wear gloves think the gloves are to protect their hands from germs.

I think I cut it open and ate the filling. I realize that's not actually an effective solution.

The kid is busting his butt at a menial job, while what he did is wrong I would hand him my business card as I walked out and tell him to call me for a job interview. Work ethic like that at his age is few and far between.
That is true but working fast and half assed is not the way to go.
I would add that arguing with a customer that you didn't touch the garbage can isn't a good plan either when you, multiple customers and likely the worker next to you know you did. A good manager should be able to cultivate Speedy's talent and energy. I agree that you gotta love the work ethic but he needs direction. If he balks at constructive criticism then he may be worse than a slower worker who does things correctly the first time, learns from his mistakes, takes direction and knows basic food handling "common sense."

I've only been to Chipotle once, many years ago. The burrito wasn't 50% as good as my local burrito place. No reason to go back even though the local place is dirtier. The food rules, especially for MN.

I think I was ahead of the curve with this thread. All of the illnesses at Chipotle I believe can be traced back to a lax attitude regarding cleanliness and food safety by their employees. I have seen ingredients fall out of the bowl or tortilla while they're making it and they just take it off that dirty counter and throw it back in there. Workers skipping the tongs, just grabbing lettuce with their latex gloved hands for salads. You're touching everything with those gloves, including the trash can in my case. I'm glad i walked out that day. I could've been a statistic, maybe even patient zero.

I would also like to formally propose an addition to the spit guard. Right now it is just in front of the food at an angle, I would like to see the guard continue over the food, like this:

_________

/

/

/ food is here

This would prevent the morons who lean over the guard from coating what I'm about to eat in their saliva.

Obviously something is wrong there. Not sure what.

But i don't care I love the place. Trust me I'd love to find a place that makes a better burrito bowl but I can't.

That being said, I found I can make a reasonable facsimile at home. Only thing missing is the lime rice. I gotta fool around with my rice recipe to finally cut chipotle out for good.

Dude...you are like a modern day prophet. You should forward this thread to corporate and threaten to send it to some investigative reporters unless they send a crap ton of gift cards.

I won't go that far but it does feel good to be vindicated. I took some heat in this thread. When you have so many people involved in the meal constructing process the chances of screw ups are higher than normal. Most of the people working there are very young and don't think much about food safety. Those latex gloves are nothing more than a cosmetic attempt at appearing to be sanitary. Whatever you'd touch with your bare hands are on those gloves and people are less apt (if ever) to clean their gloved hands (or change gloves) often. Wash your hands, ditch the gloves, use the serving utensils properly. If food is anywhere other than the serving bin, bowl or tortilla it's tossed immediately. You don't need a conveyor belt approach to building the burrito with 6 people on the line. 2 or 3 if it's busy is sufficient. Put an employee on permanent cleanliness patrol. They should never be wiping that counter down with just a napkin (which is what they usually do) or an old, dirty rag. Of course the #1 rule in any restaurant should be don't go to work if you're sick! If you sneeze anywhere near food this is what you're customers are eating.

To anyone saying this was not a big deal google trash cans viruses and bacteria. Those things are loaded with bad stuff. The whole point to those dumb gloves is to not have bacteria like that touching your burrito as they are making it. Food safety is the top priority at places like that. One outbreak can irreparably damage the location.
Exactly 6 months ago. Outbreaks all over and stock prices have plummeted.

You honestly should send this thread to corporate. No shtick.
Done. Will post a response if when I get one.
Hey there W.D.,

Thanks so much for sharing that! Anytime you have an experience that leaves you disappointed at one of our restaurants, we'd love for you to contact us directly about it. We read, respond to, and take action with every single comment that a guest sends in. We're actively looking into every possible way we can improve the way we do things to make our restaurants the safest in the industry, and we've already made a lot of changes since the recent incidents. Other than the obvious reinforcing of the safety and cleanliness procedures we already had in place, you can read about a lot of the changes we've made here: www.chipotle.com/food-safety

Assuming that you were the OP on that thread, I don't blame you for being put off by what happened. The crew member in question did several things that should never happen, regardless of speed, level of business, or any other factor. It's important for our crew members to work quickly and keep the line moving quickly, but that should never come at the cost of food quality or safety.

I know you didn't contact us hoping for any sort of compensation, but I'd still love to send you a couple of free-burrito cards (good for any main menu items). It sounds like you're a really loyal fan, and we'd love to treat you to your next couple of meals. If you just shoot me your postal address, I'll get those in the mail for you right away.

Your Chipotle Compadré,

Zach

Customer Service Coordinator

Chipotle Mexican Grill

A+, handled yourself with class and dignity. No need to get a manager and make a fuss for a free burrito in a place you don't trust. I am a big fan of the Willie and we could all learn something by the way he handles things.

But this is why we shouldn't be eating out much. You are much better served at home where you have complete control.

And send the address, take their free stuff for when you are on the road and need a freebie. You probably never want to go back but why not have a coupe freebies in the car for an emergency.

Two free burrito cards arrived in the mail yesterday. They look like this. I'm told you can get double meat and guac and it's free. Whatever is in the bowl or in the burrito is covered. Thank you Chipotle.

My wife gets loads of free stuff for being very reasonable when informing companies that they haven't met her expectations. They value the feedback. Well done, WN.

And lord knows, you are the resident expert when it comes to class and dignity

Chipotles just needs to give free guac. That seems like a fair settlement for all the f-ups they have had.

Didn't read the whole thread...but probably my biggest pet peeve in the food industry is the notion that the gloves these employees wear are somehow meant to protect the employee from my food. No ####stick...it is to protect my food from you. Place your hands on everything while wearing gloves and then touching my food is not how any of this works.

I have seen a few cashiers wearing gloves lately. Enjoy working 4 straight hours with sweaty hands guy... Why not just wash your hands?

What is the point of wearing gloves if you are the cashier? I don't think I have ever seen the cashier at Chipotle handle food prep/orders.

I think in posts like this you are supposed to tell us what you were wearing, what others were wearing and how much everything costs. Thanks

Happy now Willie?
Seems like grandstanding to me. Just keep stuff clean, wash your hands after using the bathroom, don't put the gloves on and wipe your nose, stay home if you're sick. It's not rocket science. Also, does this mean restaurants won't be as clean before feb 8th? I was in there last week around 5pm and the place was almost empty. One other customer in the entire restaurant. Only 3 employees working from what I could see. Seems like there was less food in the bins too. Crazy how a couple of outbreaks can bring down the whole chain.

That day should be a holiday anyway.

You know--day after super bowl and all?

I ate there twice a couple years back. Got sick both times. I thought it was just my stomach. In light of recent events, and that I never got sick at other restaurants, I'm pretty sure they were serving me a pile o germs.

Qboda #1!

At my local Chipotle one of the employees is about 400 pounds and has a sweating problem. If he's working the line I usually turn around and go somewhere else.
