Dude, I have what the people who tracked this for a living said was popular nationally in the US and The Smiths were not as popular as some think. If you listened to KROQ in L.A. you would have thought they had the top selling LP in the nation, but that is not reflected by the US charts at the time.  

Strangeways, Here We Come did the best, but Cashbox had it peak at only #29, and Billboard at #55, which was modestly popular but not a huge hit.

I neither love nor hate the band, but I love Dave Grohl.  By all accounts a more-than-decent fellow.

it actually hurt. such a great song- and not even that hard to sing, fer chrissakes. she just looked and sounded like she wanted nothing to do with any of it.

thanks- yeah, that was 13yo floppinho on drums. I know my wife has a video of the song just watching him. it helps.

 
I'll take an little indie band here, some of you may know... but probably not.

4- Elvis Costello and the Attractions- Alison

so many tunes to take from him/them. I love Trust, and was tempted with my favorite- Strict Time. Then started leaning to What's So Funny about Peace Love and Understanding... but Alison just slays me as a perfect song and perfect encapsulation of EC. every time.

Yup, Lorde and T.Swift were at the top of the list for me too.   I will swerve to that one rocking group that I draft a ton, and take their song I probably draft the most as well.

my gb from HS and former post college roomie is a camera man and just texted me that a pre-covid film he worked on is finally out from secrecy and will be coming in Feb. Said it was a blast to work on, and that the band was awesome to work with.

Who were a one hit wonder and I can't even recall the LP that was on or any other releases by them (although Limahl had a minor hit with Never Ending Story).

The Smiths were big in the UK but again, look at the discography to see how well those same releases fared in the US...

They simply didn't have the same following here. Living in certain cities like L.A. or SFO gave one a distorted perspective of how popular they really were in this country.

I'm saying from my experience- if you were in HS and College in the 80s... or maybe anywhere near big cities... they were huge. Ubiquitous, as Krista said. They were played a ton and omnipresent. They weren't a little indie band discovered by music nerds thumbing through bins in record stores. They were the band even casual music people liked and knew. But no- they weren't Michael Jackson or Madonna with massive billboard numbers, if that's your (not mine) sole criteria for being anything but small.

This is my experience too. I'm from Canada, but in High School and College, The Smiths were huge. I have a friend that grew up in the same time period in the PNW and that was his experience as well. He saw Morrisey on a recent solo tour.

National charts might not have reflected their prominence with our demographic, but it happened.

Great pick.  I don't think I could choose from his catalog.  I do have a particular fondness for Every Day I Write the Book and Welcome to the Working Week and Oliver's Army and the one you chose and Veronica and Peace Love and Understanding and...ok, this is ridiculous.

I was planning to draft TSwift after the turn but NV's spotlighting forced a change in strategy. I had been undecided about something old or new from her but the release of Taylor's version of Red allowed me to cover both bases. 

It's obviously the flavor of the weekend but I love how she took an old song, stretched it out to ten minutes and somehow managed to heighten everything that made it great the first time. What was a regretful tale of lost love is now an epic saga of the hero's struggle with that creepy scarf thieving Jake Gyllenhall.

I reserve the right to swap it with another of her songs if I tire of ATW.

I went to high school during The Smiths years and I don’t think I ever heard of them. I learned about them my freshman year at college. They weren’t popular in most circles in college.  They had that whiney reputation then that they do now.

ok... last time I used "WRONG" the person took me seriously. not serious. actually interesting to hear. definitely whiney- agreed. but they had a specific reputation- for being such an unsung and small band, that's interesting.

Honestly if I knew my pick for The Smiths (which I am sorry I made now) would have gotten this reaction I would have gone with my fave from The Partridge Family that I have been saving (and it is an enhanced version!)

I’m just relaying my experience at my high school and my colleges. Obviously others had different experiences.

My best friend was big into Depeche Mode, The Smiths, Erasure and the like.  If it wasn't for him, I doubt I would have been familiar beyond DM.
