THIS IS THEIR BEST SONG! - Music Draft - Saturday Night's Alright for iFighting (10 Viewers)

I woke up with the song "Behind Closed Doors" stuck in my head, and I couldn't remember if it was Charlie Pride or Charlie Rich who sang it, and then I couldn't remember which of the Seven-Deadly-Sin-Related Charlies was the Black country singer and which was the tubby one with white hair, and I thanked the good lord for the internet.

Then I came in here and saw we were still talking about The Smiths.

Medical update. My arm over the weekend got worse. I've had MRSA in the past ten years, so I have to go to the doctor today to have it checked out, as it suspiciously looks exactly like what happened last time. I'm a bit worried. As far as the draft goes, this means I'm also on skip for the day if it comes to that.

Nervously awaiting a medical response to this. Sucks. Peace, homies.

I've never looked into Apple Music before.

The UI looks very similar to Spotify except in light mode. Spot checks of their catalog suggest it's similar as well, even down to the tracks by my step-cousins-in-law.
I've been in the Apple ecosystem for a long time, so I never bothered to try out Spotify. I wonder if there's a way to take the metadata from an Apple playlist and turn it into a Spotify playlist... 🤔

I've woken up every day- after seeing Pippin 4 times over the weekend- singing that soundtrack. needless to say, it grew on me.

oh crap. feel better, gb.

Oh man, love Withers and this song.  This is my favorite pick of the 4th round(I know it's not a contest)
the lyrics get a little clunky when he's getting advice about being used from his brother, but that groove is just pure fire. easily the right pick for me. i never fully appreciated it until hearing it on The Wire.

Time for one of my favorite/favourite bands all-time. Yo Mama selects:

4.32 - Yes - Long Distance Runaround (plus it’s required to pair it with The Fish)

I would probably put Close to the Edge and Yours is No Disgrace as my favorites, but this and Roundabout were my gateways into Prog Rock (yep even before Rush). Not that this song is very Proggy (Proggish?), but the musicianship and changes in tempo were something I hadn’t really been exposed to previously. I immediately bought  my Fragile and Classic Yes cassette tapes (and eventual CDs) after hearing this on the radio and wore them out.  That’s why this one gets my pick as “best”.

I like this one and I think it holds up pretty well.

My brick and mortar music snob buddies are all over Yes.  They seem to fall into that category of of bands with elite musicianship but not as popular as less talented bands with more radio friendly hits.   That being said, I know "Owner of  a Lonely Heart" was a popular jam in the MTV era that I liked as well.

ETA:  I'm no expert as they were a little before my time.

Yes played arenas in the early 70s when that was kind of the pinnacle for Rock venues.  Stadium shows were still very rare and the devil hadn't created sheds yet.

Pick 4.33 : Rise Against – The Numbers

Not much punk or punk-adjacent stuff taken so far, but these guys have a nice little catalogue.  Probably most are at least passingly familiar with Savior, which got decent radio play.  Prayer of the Refugee and Worth Dying For are two of my personal favorites, but I picked this song because it almost perfectly captures Tim McIlrath’s impressive ability to write a political song without sounding like he’s a Fox News or MSNBC robot.  This song is in the Do You Hear the People Sing?  category of getting you fired up to overthrow whomever your perceived oppressors may be.

Pick 5.01 - The Killers – A Dustland Fairytale

Pretty sharp 180 from the previous band as to me The Killers have always sent the vibe of “we don’t take ourselves very seriously.”  Unlike a lot of their songs, this one does have a pretty clear message, supposedly inspired by Brandon Flowers’ parents.  Some of my other favorites are All These Things That I’ve Done and Miss Atomic Bomb.  They also have a nice little collection of Christmas songs, including the classic Don’t Shoot Me Santa, or the nostalgia-soaked A Great Big Sled.

sorry about the repeat ...but did you catch this early live Yes clip I posted a while back in one of our music threads?

so crazy good.

love the whole Yes catalog, less so on the later stuff ...I listened to the entire Yessongs album over and over in my college days when I painted this on my bedroom wall - sorry for yet another repost (most here have seen it) but ...

Yessongs inside cover painting on my wall years ago.

sweet carpet too eh?  - big Americana theme back in '76 ...

Now that's how you start the 5th round!  Great pick.

I always look forward to what they come out with next as their "pop artistry" is better than most IMHO.  Seen them live twice and always a great show.  Met a girl I dated for a while at a Killers show.

Also, I can rock the mic with Mr. Brightside at Karaoke.

nice tune... and not the usual hit.

I will inflict a Floppinho School of Rock Killers' tune (with the same singer) if provoked.

Thanks for posting.  I really like both of those.

This is the first music draft thread I've been in for years...I've been missing out.  Lots of good discussion(sans quibbling part) and knowledge in here.  I learn the most from discussion anything pre 1980, particularly the 70s is where my largest knowledge void is.

Sorry to hear RA.  Hope it's not MRSA again---not a common complication of vaccination, but not unheard of.  Let us know what your doc says.

Yes, I saw them with my youngest daughter recently, and it was a fun and polished performance.  Kind of regret not buying a "The Killers are dang good" concert t-shirt.  Also agree that a lot of their songs are fun to sing along with.

Search function says these two make-up picks should be good:

3.32: "Planet Earth", Duran Duran

John Taylor's bass workouts are hard to resist -- one of their earliest, and one of his finest.

4.02: "Age of Consent", New Order

If anyone ever asks how punk, post-punk, and new wave led to one another in an evolutionary sense, play them this record. First released commercially on the 1983 album Power, Corruption & Lies, the band wrote the song about a year and a half earlier and it had become a staple of their live shows by early 1982.
Great turn.  New Order was on my very short list----probably my next.

If I lie and say X is their best song because it fits my playlist and takes an unchosen giant off the board, is that cheating? Violating the concept or something? :)
