Brave parlay

9.32: "Miracles", Jefferson Starship

So much subtlety and smoothness on this track. Papa John Creach's violin is the band's secret weapon here. Listen to the "if only you believe" part of the refrain as Marty Balin's vocals soar and focus in on what Creach is doing. Also really appreciate Craig Chaquico's Spanish fingerpicking and the flavor it adds to the track. Grace Slick counterpointing Balin throughout the verses. A fantastic sax bridge. All kinds of ear candy.

...

10.02: "She Sheila", The Producers

The southeastern U.S. had its own diffuse new wave scene distinct from what was happening on the coasts. A lot of these acts made the rounds of the second-tier venues in New Orleans and Atlanta, the live-music clubs in and near the SEC schools, and such. Only a handful of these acts broke big. The Producers from Georgia were one that ended up having an MTV-fueled national profile, if a fleeting one. Love Wayne Famous's keytar solos framing the front and back of this track. In between, Van Temple's uptempo growl makes you wonder if he's excited, or PO'd, or tortured, maybe? All of the above?

I've barely passed on Miracles since round four.

10.19 War - "Why Can't We Be Friends?"

These guys, man. Chock-full of great musicians, they made some of the best (& funniest) records of the '70s. This is one of those "gotta smile when it comes on" songs for me. The link above is to the goofy-assed video they made for it.

Others considered:

"The World Is A Ghetto"

"Me And Baby Brother"

"Low Rider"

"Summer"

Great pick. Dark horse: I'm the One Who Understands

When I was living in Santa Monica I dated a girl in Pasadena and her family lived in a home formerly rented/owned by WAR while they were pretty big.

That's my WAR story.

Binky's going to be up earlier tomorrow morning than I will, I assume. Feel free to skip me and move things along unless I pop in and say I'm ready to go. Thanks, folks.

Ok.

I WAS AVOIDING TOUCHING THE DRAFT LIST. HAPPY?!

9- Tropical #### (with an F) Storm- You Let My Tyres Down

They have a good cover of Stayin Alive, and I love Planet of Straw Men...but this is my favorite tune of the last 5 years that doesn't involve Floppinho on vocals.

10- Buzzcocks- Why Can't I Touch It.

Everybody's Happy nowadays, what do I get, ever fallen in love with somebody, orgasm addict...all great. I'm a fan of a rhythm and hook that doesn't let go..in spades here.

Hopefully they haven't been taken.
Got to see the Buzzcocks at a club a few years ago. They still sound great.

10.05  Randy Described Eternity - Built to Spill
A band on my long list with nothing selected, but I think the title track from which this comes would win a song tournament for me. Not sure. Also Nina Feelin' Good was on my shorter list. The oldest kinda chill and sexy that worked for what I hoped to do. I've screwed that up though. Anyway, I slept for five hours, which should get me through the weekend. Don't skip me. AUTO SKIP has been selected 19 times on sheet 3, and TIMED OUT twice. Don't make me fix it sheet nerds.

Since I apparently needed a 5 hour nap, I'm now wide awake (see, krista - told you the 11-8 thing would work!). So, my thoughts on some recently-drafted artists.....

ZZ Top. They arrived basically fully-formed. They knew what they were good at and stuck to it. Even their '80s stuff, which many true believers hated, was more of the same - just with a couple of frills and whacky videos. "La Grange" is as good a pick as any for them. I don't recall ever hearing a song by them I didn't at least like.

Chicago. I'm not a fan of their '80s smaltz either, but I long ago got tired of the whining about it by fans and especially the band members (who I'm sure had no problem cashing all of those checks). If you don't like it, start another band. "25 or 6 to 4" is a fine choice to represent them at their most vital.

Patsy Cline. Remember my post about how Buddy Holly was set up well for the 1960s? Patsy was set up even better. Her crossover appeal and that voice, along with more soulful stylings to come across the board, made her a natural for the mid-60s and beyond. Her hometown is just up the road from me in Winchester, VA. I can take any of you folks to the Patsy Cline Museum if you're ever in town.

BeeGees. They wrote "To Love Somebody" with Otis Redding in mind. And it's great. That's good enough for me. An absolutely amazing career. There was a week in 1978 where they were responsible for like 10 of the Top 40 songs.

Jim Croce. The best singer-songwriter of the early '70s, along with Bill Withers - and neither get mentioned in orthodox rock histories. I know why Withers isn't and can only guess on why Croce isn't - because he had fun with his songs? I'd listen to his worst song over some of his more-celebrated contemporaries. Krista picked a fine song to represent Croce. I'd go with "I Got A Name", but that's quibbling.

JIm Croce always struck me as a very cool singer/songwriter and I don't get that vibe from many of them.

"Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" is lyrical butter.

I mean, listen to "Workin At The Car Wash Blues" (video with lyrics) and see how he fits some pretty tricky lyrics with the music and his voice. Some say it took Springsteen decades to work that out (& some say he never did). Croce must have picked up a few tricks from Smokey Robinson with his rhyming.

Yeah Roy so cool
That racin' fool he don't know what fear's about
He do a hundred thirty mile an hour
Smilin' at the camera
With a toothpick in his mouth
He got a girl back home
Name of Dixie Dawn
But he got honeys all along the way
And you oughta hear 'em screamin'
For that dirt track demon
In a '57 Chevrolet

This one always made me singalong

10.x - Anthony Hamilton - Do You Feel Me

one of the great contemporary soul voices, Anthony sounds like a throwback, while also being current. he's one of those guys that could sing the phonebook and it would sound great, but I chose this song because it really leans into the soul. very Otis Redding-like.

Got to see the Buzzcocks at a club a few years ago. They still sound great.

Pete Shelley died in 2018. Steve Diggle announced some Buzzcocks shows last year but they were cancelled due to Covid.

It looks like they have some dates in early 2022. No word about a new singet or if Diggle will do all the leads.

Someone I've never chosen in a draft.

10.14  Jim Croce - Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)

Torn between this one and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song."  Both have what I think are his best guitar parts.  I chose this one because it has parentheses.
I got screwed because I had company.  I even have his best song queued up.

A Long Time Ago is about how he met his future wife.  The elegant understatement and evocative mood are unmatched, except by him.

Just to be clear, and especially given the pace of today, you are much less likely to get two picks in on the weekend, with no clock versus going to one pick per day. But it seems that it's what people want so we'll stick with no clock for the weekend
just re-posting since we have some noobs and this was several pages back.

One pick per day Saturday and Sunday whenever is convenient for you. No clock. No order.

There was a bit of back & forth on this, but this isn't what was decided. We're just going in order with no clock.
