Director Hal Needham was a throwback to the old school Hollywood types like Raoul Walsh and Howard Hawks. They all got into directing via stuntwork and second unit stuff and became known for dealing effectively with stars, bringing pictures in on time and budget, and telling a story with a minimum of fussiness.

I wasn't able to find any instances where the famed auteurist critic Andrew Sarris wrote about Needham maybe he should have. Hal clearly had solid technical skills and a personal perspective that's consistent throughout his work. I'm not sure there's a lot of artsy subtext there but maybe it's behind the cases of Coors.

There are a lot of misses on '70s movies if that's your #1. Ranking Smokey ahead of Slapshot and Blazing Saddles is criminal; both of those are much funnier than Smokey. Star Wars, Jaws (at the time), and The Godfather I and II are all much better films, and it's not really close.
wrong take that to the bank brohan
I appreciate your steadfast stance, but you are unfortunately incorrect in your assessment.
The Godfather is a better movie than Smoky and the Bandit.

Smokey and the Bandit is a better 1970s movie than The Godfather.
Not only is Smokey and the Bandit better than The Godfather, but Smokey and the Bandit 2 is better than The Godfather 2. They all are unfortunately much better than Cannonball run 2, which also unfortunately, available for streaming.

Hey Cannonball Run 2 is the #1 movie in The Medium Place

That's only because the first one isn't available.

The first Cannonball was the one where the stuntwoman died. RIP.

You got to check out this guys Facebook page, he keeps the legacy alive!

I’m not sure about all that gibberish but the link goes to the page of Tim Phillips. He goes around driving a trans am as The Bandit and there’s a pretty good Sheriff Buford actor as well

Smokey and the Bandit was iconic.

But the competition for best movie in the 1970's is pretty tough, no matter what genre you prefer.

The Godfather I and II would have to be in the conversation.

The Exorcist - if you like horror

Jaws was impressive in its day.

Blazing Saddles, even, if you could not make that movie today

Big fan of Dog Day Afternoon

Star Wars - started an entire culture

Rocky - best film on a limited budget?

Young Frankenstein (RIP Teri Garr)

Slap Shot - best hockey movie ever?

Animal House RIP @blutoblutarsky

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

M*A*S*H

The cast is stellar. The jokes are easy laughs. Its so great. Sammy Davis, Dean Martin, Burt Reynolds, Mel Tillis, Jimmy the Greek, Terry Bradshaw, Dom Deluise, Roger Moore, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Jamie Farr, Peter Fonda, Adrienne Barbeau, Sylvester Stallone, Shirley MacLaine, Jack Elam. Tillis and Bradshaw were phenomenal together.
