FIRST and FOREMOST....

MOVE TO AUCTION..... it doesn't take much longer... and if you are serious about fantasy... it's worth the extra half hour.... chances are you are waiting a half hour for 2 or more guys to show up.

Second... find a system other than head-to-head. Keep head-to-head as a component, but don't base your league championship on it. I've seem brilliant alternatives over the years, aside from, but including... total points.

Lastly... skip the waiver order crap. Move to a yearly salary cap. Don't let teams that keep flipping over and over come out clean. Devise a cap... many many fantasy services provide this. Say arbitrarily $100 to spend the whole year. That way, when McNabb goes down, or Colston breakouts everyone has a chance at them, but has to determine the future value of those players. Skip rewarding the loathesome last place first shot... or penalizing someone who was proactive the week before on jumping on a TE, and now they are in the back of the line for a QB. Create a pure market system.... ya dopes !

If I tried to do #1 or #2 I would lose more than half of the owners in my league. #3 has some merit...

Excellent ideas.

My main league has done #s 1 and 3 for several years. The draft is much more fair/fun than snake, and it's not even close. The FA bidding is awesome too. There's much more strategy involved then everyone picking from similar lists.

As for #2, I played in an Antsports league that used "Victory Points" scoring. It takes into account head to head, but also gives you pts if you finish in the top quarter in total points for a week. It does eliminate some of the luck factor, at least until the playoffs.

Just my own opinion here, but for what it's worth ...

An auction system isn't a bad idea at all, though it does make it a bit more challenging. We did this in the first league I played in, and it effectively kept any team from being able to draft a roster that was far more talented than most others, unless all the other owners were idiots.

As for scrapping head to head (or making it less relevant), and scrapping the typical waiver priority system, I'd probably find another league to compete in if our league went that route. If head to head and a waiver priority system are good enough for the NFL's own rules, they're good enough for our league. Both have the effect of keeping hope alive during the season for teams that are struggling, and both (IMHO) make the championship race more interesting. I know that some folks prefer that the championship go to the team with the highest YTD points total, but I think that can get awfully boring. The LT owner in our league ran away with total points, but could easily have finished with a mediocre record. Because we use head to head though, he couldn't win the title unless he won each playoff game, just like in the NFL. I kind of like that myself.

Auction leagues do not eliminate the "luck vs. skill" debate at all. Auction shifts the "luck" factor.

Does anyone know if CBSsportsline Leagues allow the Waiver Bidding system? I like that idea and i hate being low on the list and not getting a chance to pick up someone I want/need.

No, it would just be more "hardcore".

The one thing we changed a few years ago for waivers was.

1) Only allowed 2 PUPS a week

2) You only get 1 player per waiver process. (i.e if you want 2 guys, you only get your first choice and if no one behind you wants your second guy only then do you get him) * this may be standard

3) Waiver order is based on activity of pick ups. Week one is set based on prior year finish. Then if you make a pickup you drop to the end. We do not reset every week.

You're the dope. You've fallen for that old NFL season saw.The only way to truly run an auction league is to have a completely new auction every week. In fact, better than that, have an auction after each Thursday game, just before the 8:30 game on Sunday night, and just before MNF. Then people could bid inorder to get the points they need.

To have an auction once a year is simply laziness.

if my leagues made these changes, a few people would def bail. this is fine for a WSOFF league, but for leagues where the owners are all friends, it won't stick. not bad ideas, though.

Auction only works if you have everyone present. Running a league with college buddies all over the country, some drafting by robot, makes it a bit tougher.

Yes, they do. We implemented it this year for the first time and everyone really enjoyed it. Gave everyone 200 points at the beginning of the season, and allowed for $0 bidding. Much better than the worst record gets first pick approach, imo.
