Whats the best way to make sure todays SF and STL game does not happen again.

Whats the best overtime rules?

new rule - if the score is tied after regulation, then flip a coin to determine the winner.

problem solved.

I'm a big fan of ties. If anything, I think OT should be shortened and/or there should be other rules implemented to create more ties.

Any team whose game ends in a tie is immediately suspended from the NFL for the remainder of the season. 49'ers and Rams are on byes until 2013.

Make it so that overtime losses are treated the same way as ties in terms of the standings (i.e. the Dolphins would be 4-3-2 instead of 4-5). That way there'd be no incentive for coaches to play conservatively in overtime.

Also, I'd personally make overtime wins count for less than regular wins (i.e. make # of overtime wins the first tiebreaker). That way teams would be less likely to just play for overtime rather than trying to win the game in regulation.

Don't flag a team for delay of game when the ball is snapped a quarter second after the clock hits zero. Especially if you've wasted 1:12 of clock time yourselves.

I'm very thankful that you aren't the commissioner.

The ironic thing is that it actually creates less ties when it comes to having to use playoff tiebreakers.

Both teams' starting QBs stand on the 50 yardline handcuffed to each other and blindfolded.

One defensive player from each team starts from their end zone and rushes the opposing team's QB.

Repeat as necessary. First team to have their QB show concussion symptoms loses.

Oddly people were clamoring for new overtime rules. Anyone remember that? The new OT rules could only serve to:1. Increase the likelihood of ties, because once a team has a FG on the first drive the game would not be over but rather the other team would have a chance to tie with their own FG; and2. Prolong games.Even though this SF/StL game was not caused by the new rules nonetheless fans are complaining about a tie when the new rules could only lead to more ties, not reduce them. Why did we ask for new OT rules again?

Ties suck because so much goes into each NFL game and each game is worth a lot, moreso than in other sports. They're only once a week and fewer games are played each season. They're ok in hockey because they play more games and ties are worth points in the standings. In an NFL game, it just seems like a huge effort goes in for ultimately no result for either team. Soccer has ties too but that's because nobody ever scores in soccer so its expected, and even in soccer they have ways to avoid ties.

this thread is hilarious! (last one that was really funny was sweetness's thread about drafting with guppies).
