He opened up the 3rd round with a birdie to put him 2 over and 3 back of Phil. He faded quickly on the day, but he was certainly in contention at that point.Describing Tiger as "in contention" on the weekend at the US Open is quite generous of you.dparker713 said:Guy has been in contention on the weekend the last 3 majors. He's playing pretty impressive golf at this point.
yepFINISHED!!!1
Not this time. He has this tourney right in the crosshairs.Time for Tiger to fall apart.
He's not falling apart. He's put it back together. He's not wowing yet with his shots onto the green, but his general form is back.Time for Tiger to fall apart.
That's quite a strawman you just built up there. The trouble with all this is that the Tiger haters win no matter what.
If he loses tomorrow, he's still finished because he can't close out a major. Even if he's still #1 in the world after tomorrow (and I bet he will be). But if he wins? Well, that's just one major, and he didn't win by ten strokes, so he's still nothing like his old self, and so Finless was right.

The bolded is arguably what makes him most impressive. He has been shanking drives into the thick rough all year, and frequently making awful shots that would bury a round for anyone else. And yet come the weekend he's still usually in the thick of things, and he's still the best player in the world. What I find most interesting about this version of Tiger is that he's good, really good at times, but makes horrible shots about as frequently as the other guys at the top of the leaderboard. It's a much more level playing field now that he's merely great and not superhuman. That cuts both ways -- it's great if you like suspense and having no idea who will win until late on Sunday. But those days where you're sitting there slack-jawed as he annihilates the field are over, and it's unlikely we'll see dominance like that again in our lifetimes.
I bet neither of the two guys in that final pairing ends up finishing in the top three. The tourney will be over before they reach the 18th green.Tiger has never won a major when he wasn't in the final pairing on Sunday. He'll tee off two shots and one group behind Lee Westwood Sunday.

I'm not an expert on such things, but it seems on the face of it that I've got odds up the wazoo (mathematical term) to win this thing. Time will tell. As for me being an alias, wrong chief, and Otis, should I lose, please pm your Paypal address or preferred method of payment promptly upon the conclusion of tomorrow's round, so that I can send your winnings immediately. I'll expect the same if I win. TIA. :virtualhandshake:how does one collect from bets with alaii?Done.I got $50 says you're wrong about that. His new m.o. is collapsing on the weekend.Fear factor?

Though it looks like Westwood is about to finish T3 with a couple others, so I guess technically I lose the bet that he wouldn't finish "in the top 3."
Yeah. A dumb bet in retrospect because I should have realized that "top 3," especially in a tournament like this one, can mean 5 or 6 or more golfers. That is how I understood it as well.Man, that was close. Meh, who cares. It's all about winning majors, not the ham and egger tourneys. With a T6 finish, does Tiger remain the #1 golfer in the world?
Immediately behind him
#2 Rory (lol)
#3 Rose (way back)
#4 Scott (finished T3, can't be enough to catch Tiger)
#5 Phil
Tiger has a good point lead on all these guys. Gotta think he remains world #1.
#1 in the world does not equal "finished," "done," or anything in that category. So it matters for purposes of this silly thread.Meh, who cares. It's all about winning majors, not the ham and egger tourneys. With a T6 finish, does Tiger remain the #1 golfer in the world?

Here's the prediction that seemed so absurd at the time, yet has proven to be so accurate. He's done. He'll be competitive but he lost the fear factor. Looks like The Gold Bear might be out of the woods.
