He opened up the 3rd round with a birdie to put him 2 over and 3 back of Phil. He faded quickly on the day, but he was certainly in contention at that point.

He's not falling apart. He's put it back together. He's not wowing yet with his shots onto the green, but his general form is back.

I'm not saying he'll win, but I'm saying he'll be in the general vicinity of winning all day tomorrow. Which is really all he needs. It's like if you hang out at a bar surrounded by supermodels long enough, eventually you'll score one.

 
With a victory well within reach, Woods not only has a great chance to win his first major if half a decade, but he has a chance to get that "He has never won a major when not leading going into Sunday" monkey off his back.

 
The trouble with all this is that the Tiger haters win no matter what.

If he loses tomorrow, he's still finished because he can't close out a major. Even if he's still #1 in the world after tomorrow (and I bet he will be). But if he wins? Well, that's just one major, and he didn't win by ten strokes, so he's still nothing like his old self, and so Finless was right.

Covered all the bases, IMO.

 
What I find most interesting about this version of Tiger is that he's good, really good at times, but makes horrible shots about as frequently as the other guys at the top of the leaderboard. It's a much more level playing field now that he's merely great and not superhuman. That cuts both ways -- it's great if you like suspense and having no idea who will win until late on Sunday. But those days where you're sitting there slack-jawed as he annihilates the field are over, and it's unlikely we'll see dominance like that again in our lifetimes.

The bolded is arguably what makes him most impressive. He has been shanking drives into the thick rough all year, and frequently making awful shots that would bury a round for anyone else. And yet come the weekend he's still usually in the thick of things, and he's still the best player in the world.

I think this week we've seen the most consistent version of the new Tiger yet. The awful shots have been few and far between (18 was a good example, but it's hard to think of too many others today), and he's putting well. He's dangerous tomorrow.

I find myself rooting for tiger the first three rounds and then rooting against him on the final day. Makes it more interesting to at least have him in contention.

Yeah. A dumb bet in retrospect because I should have realized that "top 3," especially in a tournament like this one, can mean 5 or 6 or more golfers.
