1pt - gambling scene - Flash Gordon

19.1 Flash Gordon Initiation (green Slug thing) --- gamble scene

http://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=5Dt1AeolGWs

link is not the scene I want ( I want the one where Flash does it,just cannot find it)

but it does show what i am talking about.
Another scene where I am challenged to find the gambling aspect. Sure, it's

challenging, but it's not gambling. I also don't feel the quality is there.

2pts - gambling scene - Casino

25.20 Casino - gambling scene

link to my scene
Terribly inaccurate and improbable. That little lady would have been thrown out on her

###. Am I supposed to believe this girl was hotter than all other tail in Vegas?

Sure... Also, where's the gambling payoff? Looks more like stealing than

gambling.

3pts - gambling scene - Indecent Proposal

25.25 - One night for One

Million Dollars, Indecent Proposal
- Gambling Scene

Tough call. With inflation, these days it might have to be 10-20 million. The biggest

gamble of all. Do you possibly gamble away your marriage for BOATLOADS of cash.
I don't feel this is much of a gambling scene. Gambling away a marriage, or whoring

your wife out for money makes you a pimp, not a gambler.

4pts - gambling scene - Croupier

28.23 - Jack Manfred shows his

skills in Croupier
- Gambling Scene

Movie has a 98% fresh Rotten Tomatometer ranking
I'm not really impressed by this characters "skill". Any fresh croupier would do as

well, or better. Not really exciting either.

5pts - gambling scene - Cool Hand Luke (50 Eggs)
[no comments from drafter]

Tough to find a clean clip of this scene, but it doesn't matter much. Again, I don't

see this as gambling as much as a challenge, with some wagering. I feel this is

different, and more like hustling like in The Hustler.

6pts - gambling scene - Deer Hunter Russian Roulette Scene
2.2 Russian Roulette, gambling scene from The Deerhunter Not sure if this was

on anyone's radar but whatever.
I feel, judging by Norwoord's original criteria, Russian Roulette was not the intended

gambling scenes he was targetting. The scene is quite excellent, so it gets a bump by

that.

7pts - gambling scene - Run Lola Run

16.19 Lola Rennt (a/k/a Run Lola Run) (1998) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ed82P9ZY8A&feature=player_embedded'>gambling scene)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?The title character, desperately needing money to help her boyfriend, enters a posh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?German casino, and bets it all on a spin of the wheel. I love Franka Potente's
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?acting, her emotions when she wins, and the reactions of the nattily dressed patrons.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?
I guess the payoff monetarily is there, but it's also highly improbable. A person

dressed like the main character would not be allowed through the doors at any casino

in Europe, would never ever be given a "credit", even 80 pfennig, and the odds of

having the same number come up twice in a row is mathematically 1,368 to 1 (standard

European wheel).

8pts - gambling scene - A Day at the Races

Gambling Scene

A great movie and I love this scene. Perfectly incorporates the get rich schemes of

gamblers and the bloodsuckers who know a soft target when they see one. Has an

excellent pay off at the end. Groucho and Chico in fine form.

14.05 – A Day at the Races – Getta your Tootsi Frootsi Ice Cream scene –

Gambling Scene
You not got a code book?

11pts - gambling scene - The Hustler
It's surprisingly hard to find a full clip of the gambling scene I took. I wanted the

FIRST meeting/game between Fast Eddie and Minnesota Fats.

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-tv6s4/the_hustler_novel_youre_minnesota_fats_arent_you/'>Here is a link to some
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-of it, and when put together with some of the others listed on the right you get the
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-whole scene. I'd hope the judge is very familiar with this anyway.
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/mv-
I'm very familiar with the scene, and absolutely love it. It's available at TCM on the

web. http://www.tcm.com/mediaroom/video/116309/Hustler-The-Movie-Clip-Minnesota-Fats-

Fast-Eddie-meet.html (It obviously continues after this clip. I feel this scene

suffers in the "gambling" department, which has me downgrading it slightly. It's more

about hustling in pool versus gambling.

12pts - gambling scene - The Gambler

The Gambler - Blackjack Scene

www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-jeWvB6xXo

(Starts at 4:43)

Underrated James Caan performance here
As a stand alone scene this doesn't fare well at all, and needs the narrative of the

movie to make any sense. From a gambling perspective this is weak as well, and doesn't

allow the viewer to feel the "rush" of the bet.

13pts - gambling scene - Let It Ride
Okay, I have yet to find video of the specific scene I want but I need to pick it

now...

9.09 -- Last scene from 'Let It Ride', Gambling scene.
They are milking this scene too much in my opinion. You will not get to chat with the

person in the window during a race day, you won't have time to survey people, and "big

bets" is not a big deal. I do like that they capture the degenerative nature of people

seen at the track, but it falls short for the top mark for me.

14pts - gambling scene - Rounders (final scene)
8.10 Rounders final scene - gambling "He tripped me!!"
A little silly, in that it was over the top obvious from the maneurism, the dialogue

and the way the hand played out, but it's still decent, even if there are slight

issues with the scene.

15pts - gambling scene - Owning Mahowny

27.19 -

21pts - gambling scene - Poker scene from The Sting
Sorry guys- on my iPhone- poker scene from The Sting- gambling- will link later.

Robert Shaw cheats, but Paul Newman cheats better.
Paul Newman sure has his share of gambling scenes. It feels like I'm judging Best Paul

Newman gambling scene. I don't think this beats out the Cincinnatti Kid, even close,

but it's a fine scene.

22pts - gambling scene - final scene from The Cincinnati Kid

Make-up pick:

3.05: Steve McQueen vs. Edward G. Robinson in the final hand of The Cincinnati

Kid (Gambling Scene)

I reject these rankings and demand the return of a judge who will give a better score....
I will pm you my paypal info. For $20, I will dismiss Charvik's rankings and call for a new judge. For $30, I will post my own rankings and give you top score. And for only $40, I will post my own rankings, give you top score, and arrange the rest any way you like. Plus, I will throw in a set of ginzu steak knives!

I would like to know where Val had the deer hunter scene
Actually, he was kinder to it that I would have been. When Mrs. R started to read the list, my question was "who was the 1 pointer?", cause I was expecting either the Deer Hunter or Flash Gordon to land there - I didn't consider either to be gambling by the spirit of the list.

When you come right down to it, the person who got screwed by the change in judges was Joffer. I had Rounders pegged as a top 5. But I can buy Charvik's reasoning, so his ranking here works for me. Sorry, Joffer.

Surprisingly, though, Charvik and I agreed almost all the way through. Great work, dude.

Val

I'll post my rankings (Monologues) Friday evening.

I haven't had a chance to read todays rankings, been running around Comic Con all day. Getting in line for Hall H now and I'll stop to read them!

Not arguing my score, but as I said when I drafted..the scene posted was not my actual scene. Again not thinking it deserves a better score, but to say it was not gambling is laughable. Loser loses his life after all.

 I was trying to interpret the original criteria, which I thought favored casino type gambling. I agree Russian roulette is a gamble, but that's not the same as gambling.

never saw the original criteria, simply thought all gambling counted....and wanted to pick something abit outta the box. I always figured this would score low anyway, so no worries. I really suck at these drafts, but they are fun.

Has anyone seen 24 Hour Party People? Other than the drafter who I assume saw it and liked it.

I haven't seen this one and I've had trouble finding it.

Anyone want to PM me and give me some idea where it should slot? I haven't finished the rankings quite yet - but just a general idea on how good it was and where it should rank compared to the other films on the list would be helpful.

Don't think there's a lot of action here. imdb? RottenTomatoes? Anything other than a bunch of galoots on a message board? I started to answer but then realized I might have been the drafter. It's been too long and I don't remember and am too lazy to check. If I wasn't I can comment. I probably was though.

Galoots? Did this suddenly become 1934? Krista's getting old.

I go to a bi-monthly breakfast event which is held every other month, and I get paid bi-monthly on the 15th and 30th.

The first is bi-monthly. The second is semi-monthly.
Bi-monthly, just like bi-annually, could be either twice a month or once every two months. It's defonately confusing but both usages are acceptable - I think the more common usuage would be "twice a month" but when talking years in may be "every two years".

I checked and you are/were the drafter. Hopefully some one will chime in - or that one will have to be done a bot more objectively. Maybe I'll find it somewhere, but have kind of given up hope on that, and frankly with tim's two week time frame I wouldn't have all that much opportunity anyway. I have seen the couple of films that I hadn't already seen though and started putting a list together.

I'm trying to combine as much subjectivity and objectivity as possible.

Looks like you can buy it from Amazon Instant or rent from Netflix as a disc. You can also rent it digitally from Vudu  . I've never hard of Vudu.

I looked over the picks last night and IMO 24HPP should be no worse than top 5 and if I were judging it would be a strong candidate for top 3. It's an awesome, irreverent look at the "Madchester" music scene in the 80s - one of the most important periods in modern music history. There's some editorial license taken - hell, a good chunk of it is just urban legend stuff - but the point of film is entertainment, and this one delivers. Personally I love the numerous moments they break the 4th wall but some find that annoying - I guess from a personal preference view point you could ding it for that.

This is my favorite Steve Coogan role. Worth checking out for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Not to be a doosh, but Doug, did you add in Nick's rankings for multiple performances? They were completed right before the gambling rankings. Looks like they might still need to be added in.

I'm glad youi said something, AA, because I overlooked the multiple performances rankings totally. Thanks for the catch.

However, BobbyLayne did widen his lead a smidge :D

Just heard back last night. He said he was going to try to get them to me today... if I don't get them by Friday afternoon I will do my own rankings from scratch.

(He's been working a LOT on a new job, which is why he has not had time to even check in at FBG's.)
