timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (3 Viewers)

Dance Scene

This scene goes to the heart of a very beautiful movie and showed off Tom Hanks in true star mode.

A sweet scene that had me totally transfixed.

17.21 – Tom Hanks and Robert Loggia – Big – Dance Scene

19.13 Movies New York - Annie Hall
One of the more interesting NYC niche blogs is Scouting New York. The guy is a film location scout and he comes across some amazing places. Occasionally he delves into a then and now series, in which he finds locations from NYC films and does a side by side of how it has/hasn't changed. Good stuff. Last summer he did a two-part series on Annie Hall:

The Filming Locations of Annie Hall, Part 1 – New York, You’ve Changed

The Filming Locations of Annie Hall, Part 2 – New York, You’ve Changed

Film criticRoger Ebert called it "just about everyone's favorite Woody Allen movie". I'm not sure how that translates in a category draft; personally I'd rank Manhattan, The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2,Taxi Driver, Dog Day Afternoon, and Do The Right Thing ahead of it as a pure New York movie.

Woody doesn't think this is his greatest movie; in fact, he hates it. But that's Woody being Woody.

When I begin a film, I always think that I’m going to make The Bicycle Thief or Grand Illusion or Citizen Kane, and I’m convinced that it’s going to be the greatest thing to ever hit celluloid. Then, when I see what I’ve done afterward, I’m praying that it’s not an embarrassment to me. So I’ve never been satisfied or even pleased with a film that I’ve done. I make them, I’m finished, I’ve never looked at one after. I made my first film in 1968, and I’ve never seen it since. I just cringe when I see them. I don’t like them because there’s a big gap between what you conceive in your mind when you’re writing and you don’t have to meet the test of reality.
One thing I find fascinating is it's ended up an entirely different movie than Woody set out to make. It was originally going to be called Anhedonia, which is the scientific term for one who cannot feel pleasure.

[T]hat film was not supposed to be what I wound up with. The film was supposed to be what happens in a guy’s mind, and you were supposed to see a stream of consciousness in his mind and I did the film and it was completely incoherent. Nobody understood anything that went on and the relationship between myself and Diane Keaton was all anyone cared about. That was not what I cared about. That was one small part of another big canvas that I had. In the end, I had to reduce the film to just me and Diane Keaton and that relationship, so I was quite disappointed in the end of that movie, as I was with other films of mine that were very popular.
The stuff that ended up getting cut is legendary. In one fantasy segment that didn't make the reworked movie, the New York Knicks play a team made up of Woody and several philosophers (Kafka, Nietszche, and Kierkegaard). As they reworked the film they struggled with the title; at one point they almost went with It Had To Be a Jew.

Academy Awards 1. Best Picture, Charles H. Joffe, Producer 2. Best Director, Woody Allen 3. Best Actress in a Leading Role, Diane Keaton 4. Best Original Screenplay, Woody Allen,Marshall Brickman

18.03 Snow White in the Haunted Forest, Snow White - Scenes That Scared Me as a Child

This scene freaked me out...my mom would always have to FF past it...WTF thought this would be an appropriate scene for a kids animated Disney movie? Let's chronicle the horrors:

:07 Look of sheer terror on poor Snow White's face as the Huntsman implores her to run into the forest and "never come back"

:16 Snow White must swat her way through a mass of vines and tendrils...hey this isn't THAT bad

RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN

:21 Ruh Roh, there's yellow eyes in that there tree...oh it's an owl...an angry screechy owl!:

:24 More yellow eyes...lots of them in that cave...BATS! With bared teeth flying at her

RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN

:27 - :32 Oh look, the branches have become fingers that are grasping and pulling at Snow White's dress and cape

RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN

:34 Oops, fell into this dead tree...OMG, more fingers

:40 Dead creepy tree trunk...THAT COMES ALIVE!

:41 Stumble into hole of mouth of another dead tree that looks like an alligator, with more creepy yellow eyes

:46 That's a helluva fall...HOLD ON SNOW WHITE!

:49 Into the water! Where those three logs have turned into alligators!

RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN

1:01 Another creepy dead tree comes alive!

RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN AS THE LEAVES ALL ATTACK YOU

1:09 More bats!!

1:11 SCARIEST DEAD TREES TO COME ALIVE YET!! THREE OF THEM!!! AND AGAIN WITH THE CLAW BRANCHES!! I HATE NATURE SO MUCH RIGHT NOW!!

1:13 - 1:21 SCARY TREE OVERLOAD...SPIN...EYES....SPIN...EYES...SPIN...EYES

1:22 DOWN GOES SNOW WHITE!! DOWN GOES SNOW WHITE!! /Cosell

With the accompanying scary score and her constant screaming, this was nightmare fuel for days as a kid

It's interesting you chose that- I have been expecting the queen, in her disguised form, to be selected for that category.
I didn't find that nearly as scary...because the queen was already "bad"

But the whole nature comes alive and tries to kill Snow White as she screams bloody murder while running away and being told to never return? That was some scarring ####

Crap. I was gonna pick that. And it's much scarier than the evil queen stuff.

I guess because it was marketed in the U.S. as "Return of the Dragon" I always assumed it was a sequel. I defer to those more in tune with these things though.

Judging dance is not going to be easy....so many great picks to choose from.
Unlike Nazi films, where there's like 2 good ones and the rest suck.
Maybe it's just your criteria that sucks there Judgy McJudger. Unless you think my movie is one of those two, then it's fine.
I have no idea what you picked. But because it's you, it isn't.
Touché, Tim. Touché. <_<

How do you type the accent over the "e" in words like touche? I've never been able to figure that out.

Love this movie so much. And forgot until I looked it up that she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for this.

19.19 - Death Wish - NY Movie

Yes, they made 5 of these (so it's easy to say NY wasn't that important). But they were all made on the strength of the first (which, like many franchises, is really the only good one).

I remember 1970's New York City. This movie 100% nails it.

Given the relative weakness of the Super Hero movies left to choose from I was planning to grab this movie as my pick for the category.

My defense would have been - How was Charles Bronson's character any different from Batman? - ouside of bank accounts of course. Both were regular men, with no super powers, who became crime fighting vigilantes after experiencing the deaths of family members to violent crime.

Spiderman and Batman were both at times hunted by the law as dangerous vigilantes.

Oh well.

19.25 - Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos, Best Portrayal of a real person

Take one of the most beautiful women in the world and make her look llike complete dog####, and then throw in her Oscar winning perfomance. Shocked she's still around.

20.01 - Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone, England

Always loved the fact that these movies were set in England. Just wouldn't work for me anywhere else.
