timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (1 Viewer)

Ok, let's start Car Chases. I'll post 5 at a time - probably finish tonight / tomorrow.

My criteria was not very restrictive - I did want it limited to cars / trucks / etc, and I discouraged (but didn't forbid) CGI. These rules were in place to more or less discourage spaceships / planes / train chases (like The General) There is a case where a train chase ranks fairly high, but I don't think anyone will complain (because it's a highly regarded car chase, plus it was picked before I took on the task of judging.)

These were pretty hard to differentiate at times - in some cases, two picks had basically the same strengths and weaknesses, and in cases like that, I just went with general feel - which did I just "like" the best? Some of my comments will talk about wreckage being good, etc, but that's more of an overall comment than a serious judging criteria (because some of the top picks have little wreckage). I judged mainly on how I felt watching the clip / chase - was it exciting and/or engaging? Did it have cool cars, good stunts, wrecks, etc? Believable (to a degree, anyway)? These were fun to watch over and over.

After scoring, I looked at draft position. It seems draft position did factor into things in an overall sense - while there was some fantastic value in the middle / later rounds, most of your top ranks went earlier rather than later. In other words, you guys know your car chases, and picked the best stuff early.

Ok, onto the show:

Car Chases - Stalled Out

Someone has to be on the bottom - here they are:

1 car pileup - Akira

I’m not just dinging this for being a cartoon (Toy Story will outrank a few of the lower “real” chases). But it’s just not a great car / bike chase. The animation style used doesn’t help it, either. I get that this is a classic movie, but the chase just doesn’t work for me. Sorry. Someone has to take the 1.

2 car pileup - Cobra

Sly’s worst movie, which is saying a lot when your catalog includes “Stop or my mom will shoot”. This is total 80’s “action movie” dreck, but we’re judging the car chase, not the film. But the chase is lame, too. Once you start the “slam on the brakes and drive backwards while shooting then slam them again and turn around and get away while every perfectly coifed hair remains in place”, I lose interest.

3 Car Pileup - Cannonball Run

It gets a point or two for cool cars. But it’s a movie about a race – that kind of makes the entire thing a car chase. Still, the cop getting passed in the opening is pretty funny.

4 Car Pileup - Wanted

Angelina Jolie driving with her feet while the goofball dude looking up her dress says “sorry”. Maybe Brad was on set or something. This is a good example of completely unrealistic things happening in a car chase – the end flip over the cop cars is really dumb (now, this isn't to say that unrealistic is always bad - but this one is meant to be "real", and not a goof. There are a few higher rated chases with goofy things that are unrealistic, but they fit the tone of the film better).

5 car pileup - Drive

It’s a fine movie. It’s just not a great car chase (and frankly, a little boring.) I know it has tension in the context of the film, but I’m just not feeling it watching the clip. And if it was a great chase, I’d get a feeling of the tension watching it.

Car Chases - LOOK OUT!!!

6 car pileup - Christine

It’s not really a car chase in the classic sense – it’s Christine chasing (and then crushing) a kid. But it’s still fun, which is why it’s not on the bottom.

7 Car Pileup - It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

It took a while for me to find a clip of this (it’s buried in a “here are a bunch of car chases” clip). While it’s somewhat fun and goofy, there’s waaaaay too much “green screen” for my taste – too much of this chase was filmed in the studio, as opposed to the road.

8 car pileup - Smokey and the Bandit

I really like this movie, and that 77 Firebird T-top is a classic car. But it’s not a great car chase, and suffers a bit from the cuts to the CB talk. Still, thanks for picking this so we can see that awesome car.

9 Car Pileup - The Town

It’s not horrible, but it’s fairly generic. It’s more like a short getaway than a prolonged, tense chase.

10 car pileup - The Rock

This chase would have been much better had they filmed it differently. Too many closeups, and too many jump cuts – you never really get a sense of what’s going on before they jump to something else. Nice explosion or three.

Car Chases - Whoa, that was close!!

11 car pileup - Short Time

I found this fun, but a little cheesy at the same time (and I can't tell if it was meant to be cheesy). I figure it fits right around the middle of the pack. Not great, not bad.

12 car pileup - Toy Story

Inspired pick, and a lot of fun (works much better for me than the Akira pick). But this is as high as I can put an animated pick.

13 car pileup - Midnight Run

Now it gets hard – every chase from here on out is a good one. This chase is a lot of fun, just enough in the stunts department, and the helicopter surveying the wrecked police cars is funny. Nice pick.

14 car pileup - Colors

There’s nothing wrong at all with this pick – on another day, maybe it scores 3 or 4 slots higher. It’s a solid car chase in a decent movie, but the others above it are simply more memorable to me.

15 car pileup - The Italian Job

Try as we might, we cannot find the scene the drafter really wanted. But I did get a scene for the mini cooper chase in the mall, and while I hated it at first (really, Mini coopers?) it grew on me as I watched it. Really fun. The drafter says the scene he wanted is better (I have not seen this version of the film), but based on the mall scene, its place in film lore, and the stuff above it, this feels about right.

happy with 6 points for Christine...was expecting worse. Just wanted to take something a little different.

Car Chases - We're Gaining on Them!!!

16 car pileup - The Dead Pool

Clint Eastwood being chased by… a toy car? That’s the premise here. The evil villain is controlling a toy car, meant to blow Clint up. Ok, it’s a little goofy, but tell me you don’t laugh when the toy car gets air over the hills of San Fran. Awesome stuff.

17 car pileup - To Live and Die in LA

I like this chase a lot – I just like the ones above it better.

18 car pileup - Gone in 60 seconds

Fun car chase that has everything you want – awesome cars, speed, wrecks, and constantly introduces others / bystanders. The gap between this and the top is very small.

19 car pileup - The Blues Brothers

Most cars destroyed award has to go to this film. Basically, every law enforcement vehicle in the State of Illinois is involved in this chase. It’s a little goofy in places, but when you wreck this many cars, you almost have to score well.

20 car pileup - The French Connection

While it feels a bit overrated watching it now, I have to admit, it was pretty groundbreaking at the time. It also retains the tense feeling, so it’ll never drop too far down the list. It does feature a train as one of the main players (which I said I didn’t want), but in all fairness, this was picked prior to my becoming judge, so I won’t ding it for that at all. 20 points is a very respectable score, but in terms of sheer excitement, drama, crashes, etc, there are better chases ahead.

Car Chases - Driving off into the Sunset (at top speed)

21 car pileup - Ronin

I love this car chase. Has a little bit of everything – great driving, great stunts, wrecks, the wrong way in a tunnel, etc. Tons of fun.

22 car pileup - The Road Warrior (my pick)

I picked this in the first or second round (and prior to becoming judge), so you know how I feel about it. I’ll let Tim change the slot down or up if he feels I have erred. But this is an incredible car chase – the hordes of the Lord Humongous (in all manner of cool vehicles) chase Mad Max, who is driving a truck of… sand. Incredible wrecks, extremely tense, an awesome “hang out the door sawed-off shotgun blast”, and the best stunt work on this list… I really want to rank it higher (I personally think it’s the best car chase ever), but it’s my own pick, and the ones above it are total classics in their own right.

23 car pileup - The Bourne Supremacy

Fantstic car chase. Excellent sense of speed, great wrecks, just enough jump cutting to give you a sense of lots going on (feet to pedals, etc), but not too much as to distract – I still get a good feel for the overall picture. The best "modern-looking" car chase.

24 car pileup - Death Proof

Just when real car chases seemed like a thing of the past, Quentin Tarantino delivers one of the best of all time. Great cars, top speed, stuntwoman Zoe Bell hanging onto the hood at 100mph… wow, what a chase. I loved every second of it. Not his best movie by any stretch, but worth watching just for the incredible chase.

25 car pileup - Bullitt

Ridiculously good chase, great stunts, and some exceptional driving. Great looking Muscle Cars, too. Ok, it doesn’t have the same sense of awe that some of the previous chases inspire (the wrecks are not as good, there’s no wrong way through the tunnel, etc), but for some reason, this older chase scene is still really exciting – maybe credit the cars, the sound (music, engines, etc), the locale (San Fran is great for car chases, isn’t it?) Based on all of that, plus its icon status (which it clearly earns), and you get the best car chase of all time.

Nice job by all the judges so far.

Road Warrior could definitely be placed higher, so if Tim moves it lower......aahh who am I kidding, it wouldn't even be one of his top 10 ####ups.

Speaking of....How would Duel have ranked here?

well, the movie is one long chase - that would be my one problem with it. I do like it - it's a really tense movie. Any scene you pick would be good. Low to mid teens, somewhere in there?

sniped for a 25 pointer by 1 second. My consolation? a 4 pointer. :wall:

New York Rankings Upcoming

This was a very tough category, as a lot of great movies, and great NEW YORK movies were picked

Biggest ommission, and one that would have garnered a high ranking was Sweet Smell of Success, the great Burt Lancaster/Tony Curtis movie

Biggest ommission, and one that would have garnered a high ranking was Sweet Smell of Success, the great Burt Lancaster/Tony Curtis movie
Any movie with "Sweet Smell" in the title can't truly be about New York

25th Place - 1 Point: Nighthawks

Hadn't seen this in a long time. Solid formula cop flick, but nothing special. Lindsay Wagner was hot in 1981 though. And Rutger Hauer always makes a good villain. Some decent NY scenery, especially the subway and the Roosevelt Island tram. Overall quality and a large part of the setup taking place in London and Paris means it is slotted here.

24th Place - 2 Points: Juice

Gritty early 90s crime drama that does give us a view of life in Harlem at the time. Another solid movie, and I'm glad it was chosen, but it just doesn't measure up to the movies above it.

23rd Place - 3 Points: King of New York

Man I love Christopher Walken. That said, this is a pretty mediocre genre pic. Takes place in New York, obviously, but it is a pretty generic New York. Ferrera could and should have done a lot more with what he had at his disposal

22nd Place - 4 Points: King Kong

King title run! Kong at the top of the Empire State Building is obviously an iconic image, but over half the move doesn't even take place in New York. One iconic scene/image does not a true New York movie make, otherwise Sleepless in Seattle might have been chosen (thanks to all drafters for not subjecting me to that). Ultimately 'twas lack of NYC-ness that killed the beast.

21st Place - 5 Points: The Muppets Take Manhattan

This was tough for me to rank as The Muppets and New York are two of my Top 5 favorite things (along with Pearl Jam, Mark Twain and the works of German composer Waldemar von Baußnern [just kidding, the last one is boobs]). And it does use a lot of great NYC locations. Ultimately though it suffers from being somewhat minor Muppets and the quality of the films ahead of it. That doesn't mean that whenever a friend gets engaged I don't send them this:

Hey TU how about the original Out of Towners with Jack Lemmon? Strongly considered it.
Haven't seen it in a while...Remember the Waldorf, the Central Park scene and the transit strike stuff off the bat as NYCish...Would likely have been somewhere in the 15-10 range...

More after Game of Thrones

23rd Place - 3 Points: King of New York Man I love Christopher Walken. That said, this is a pretty mediocre genre pic. Takes place in New York, obviously, but it is a pretty generic New York. Ferrera could and should have done a lot more with what he had at his disposable.

Disposal...sorry for the typo...It's not a very good movie

20th Place - 6 Points: 25th Hour

Based on a book written by Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff, 25th Hour could have easily scored well in monologue IMO (I kinda remember it being picked there...was it moved?). The most famous scene (and best) in the movie is also the most New Yorkish, with some great shots of the city and it's denizens...The rest of the movie is OK, but doesn't rise to the level of that moment. Remember when Ed Norton made movies?

19th Place - 7 Points: Gangs of New York

There are a few filmmakers whose names are synonymous with New York. Scorcese is certainly one of them. But Gangs of New York is not one of his better movies. Cameron Diaz was woefully miscast, DiCaprio's accent wavers throughout, and Daniel Day Lewis turns in his least authentic, hammiest performance to date here. It's a fascinating period in New York City history, and we get some of that (life in the Five Points, difference between the uptowners and slum dwellers, immigrant experience) but ultimately it is painted with too wide of a brush and comes off as almost comic book-ish. Plus it gave us the travesty that is

18th Place - 8 Points: Shaft

If it was a New York movie theme draft this would likely be a 25 pointer. Alas, it is not. Gets some bump for it's cultural significance and some cool retro shots of NYC from the 70s, but this is ultimately where it slots. That said, http://dmsr.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/isaacinchainsbrodskysmall.jpg

17th Place - 9 Points: Escape From New York

Has become a cult favorite, but this is ultimately a B Movie...Good use of New York sights, especially the New York Public Library and Grand Central Station. Interesting concept. Solid NY movie. Even if it is a dystopian NYC hellscape. Which, somedays, makes this seem like a documentary. Also, who plays the Duke of NYC? http://dmsr.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/isaacinchainsbrodskysmall.jpg

16th Place - 10 Points: On The Town

Leonard Bernstein music, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra! So much good stuff here, including co-director Kelly's insistence that part of it be shot on location in New York at sights like Rockefeller Center and the Museum of Natural History. This is another movie (like 25th Hour) that would have done better if the category was New York Scene. As a movie as a whole, however, it's light and breezy but generally pretty unsubstantial. It did give us this though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7CIgWZTdgw Although the idea of anyone venturing to Yonkers is pretty absurd

Yea, not a good film. It really disappointed me - I thought it would be so much better.

15th Place - 11 Points: The WarriorsAnother iconic cult classic, and one where NYC plays a significant plot part, as The Warriors must traverse the entire city to get home to Coney Island. Definitely has some great scenes, but the dialogue is clunky and the plot is threadbare. But it does ooze New York

14th Place - 12 Points: Death Wish

Bronson is great, and there are some great NYC scenes. The early 70s in NYC were a violent time, and while Death Wish may have overstated/romanticized that, it does reflect a time/place in NYC history. Not sure we needed 4 sequels, though. Actually, yeah, sure we didn't. Fun Fact: One of the rapists/thugs was Jeff Goldblum in his film debut.

13th Place - 13 Points: Ghostbusters

Another contender for song champion, Ghostbusters was one of my favorite movies growing up.And it does use New York very well as a backdrop for the supernatural happenings of the film. I used to work about a half mile from the firehouse on North Moore Street.; That this isn't higher is a testament to the quality of the films ahead of it.

12th Place - 14 Points: Metropolitan

Full disclosure: I am a HUGE Whit Stillman fan.And this is his best work. We often think of NYC as gritty, gutty, grimy (and other adjectives that could describe white point guards), but there is also the whole world of New York "aristocracy" that anyone who grows up in NYC comes into (usually brief) contact with at some point. This movie encapsulates this beautifully. Falling in love above your station in New York didn't end with Henry James. Oh, and in case you were wondering, her name was Amy.

11th Place - 15 Points: The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

New York City in the 70s was a target rich environment for movies. This film is one of the best examples of this.; Simple premise executed brilliantly. With one of New York's truly signature icons (the subway) as its backdrop this is a tense, exciting thriller that holds up to this day (another one I was happy to revisit as I hadn't seen it in awhile). Also, Jerry Stiller plays a cop named Rico Petrone. Take a guess as to whether he's a wise cracking sarcastic Italian cop

10th Place - 16 Points: West Side Story

Woo Hoo! Top 10! Probably the pick I struggled most to place. It has a great pedigree (Best Picture, etc) and is widely regarded as a top 5 musical ever, and is a NY movie, but it doesn't hold up much upon re-viewing. The dancing is great, but the story is Romeo and Juliet rehash with some picante thrown in. It all seem so artificial to me, I guess. I know the opening scene was shot by Lincoln Center, but much of the rest of the movie screams film set. Had it as high as 6 and as low as 20 at one point. This is where it ultimately ends up. Too much snapping. Snapping never intimidated anyone.

9th Place - 17 Points: Once Upon a Time in America

As much as I love The Godfather, OUATIA (yeah, I went there) is almost as good IMO. BTW, I am judging the 229 minute version, as there are several versions out there, a la Blade Runner. A truly epic gangster yarn set in NYC over 4 decades, this is a great movie with a great cast. The gangster mythology is a huge part of New York's DNA, and this is one of the best. Would likely be even higher if much of it hadn't been shot overseas.

8th Place - 18 Points: Midnight Cowboy

Another nominee for best song from a NY movie, this is a great movie in its own right. It takes a pretty common story trope (hayseed comes to the big city) and really fleshes it out. I don't think Hoffman has ever been better than he was as Ratso Rizzo. I also am not sure what is more astonishing, that this was Jon Voight's film debut or that an X Rated movie won Best Picture. Really depicted the unsavory aspects of NY while also romanticizing its characters. Fun fact: The teen Voight agrees to fellate for money is Bob Balaban! Also:

7th Place - 19 Points: Dog Day Afternoon

6th Place - 20 Points: Serpico

Seemed appropriate to group these two together. Two landmark 70s films, two true stores, two great Sidney Lumet (an underrated "New York" filmmaker) directorial jobs and two powerhouse Pacino performances. Ultimately Serpico edges out Dog Day Afternoon by a nose for 6th on the back of being a more interesting story and showing more of NYC.

That said, when I was 15 and a counselor at summer camp one of the kids stole another one's baseball cap, and I started a "Hattica! Hattica!" chant. So there's that.

5th Place - 21 Points: After Hours

Oh, hey Marty...Good to see you again.Like Pelham, After Hours features another NYC transportation landmark, the cab.; Scorcese doesn't venture into comedy too often, but if this is the result, he should definitely venture into it more.; A great ensemble cast highlights Griffin Dunne's calamitous trip throughout NYC one night trying to get home.; Haven't we all had cab rides like this in NYC at some point? OK, like 10% of this?

4th Place - 22 Points: Annie Hall

Insane value. Some consider it the best romantic comedy of all time. Some consider it Woody Allen's magnum opus (and almost certainly his most famous work). I adore it (look at my sig) . One of the more under appreciated aspects of it was Christopher Walken's performance as Diane Keaton's strange brother:

) to the end, it remains, to me, the quintessential New York movie. I have watched this movie over 100X. Using Copland's Fanfare was brilliance. Also, Mariel Hemingway was hot (She was 18!)

Outstanding rankings, TU, and great writeups. The point guards crack was classic. Nice handling of an awesome category.
:goodposting: Really well done. My only quibble would be with 25th Hour (not my pick), but that is one of my favorite movies. I think your pick absolutely deserves to be as high as it is.

I'm done with my world travels for the next two weeks, so depending upon how a couple of things shake out, I hope to get to Romantic Gestures this weekend. I note that several people owe me scenes or scene links; if I get a chance I'll post which ones I need. Thanks.

3rd Place - 23 Points: Do The Right Thing

Yes, my pick, and if anyone (not Tim) wants to move it, please say so...that said, as stated earlier, this was a definitive place/time NYC film, and one that depicted cultures that had been woefully unrepresented in cinema to that point...
I would rank it 2nd for the Cat, but close enough.

timschochet as an expert of all things NYC is still good schtick, though.

7th? That's not mediocre.

Little disappointing after being ranked 13th or T13th after 4 consecutive updates, but I trust this will self-correct.

Whoever judges next, we'll need a bottom 5 slot from you.

TIA
