timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (4 Viewers)

Or just try to have fun with a potentially subpar category ....
This I'm still on board with too, there are still plenty to choose from.
I had several other choices in this category (and I thought of another a few minutes ago). I made this choice because I love this scene, and also because it blew open the dance category and took out a romantic gesture. The anti-draft rules.

I think it's more that the judge takes a category because they might have expertise in it, meaning they can punt to later and still get a good pick. Note: I have expertise in neither category I'm judging; they were foisted upon me. ;)
Without confirming or denying the validity of this argument, I will coincidentally note that I am a litigator, a superhero to a couple of people, and a dream sequence. :bowtie:

Round 4: No Idea What This Movie is About...

Head, starring The Monkees.

I remember watching this around the time I was 11 years old (circa 1976), and have not watched it since. A sampling of the YouTubes tells me I should watch it again. In hindsight, I think this was where I was first exposed to the notion that weird could be cool, KISS notwithstanding.
This was on TCM a couple of days ago. Still makes no sense. I had it in the drugs category. Woof.

5.07 The Passenger (1975): Long Take

Michelangelo Antonioni's film starring Jack Nicholson features a roughly seven-minute tracking shot near the end of the film. Hopefully, my assumption that the Long Take Judge is familiar with the movie is correct, as the scene (linked here) contains some serious spoilers.
Nice pick, friend.

Looks like the content got deleted (copyright b.s.). Here is another one of the same shot.

Ah, crap, I thought I doublechcked that. Thanks for the save and the proppage, BL. While I am out of my depth in many of these categories, I actually had not only "The Passenger" on my radar from jump, but also a backup that is still out there. I'm eager to see if it gets selected.

Another, super easy idea would be to add a Wildcard scene. Just draft our favorite scenes, least favorite, scary, whatever. Again, we are a a little disadvantage since we are 100+ movies in and a bunch more taken out by the rule, but this could be a compromise.
I like the unsexy scene as well, but until Tim comes down from the mountain top and decrees his choice we are all just waiting to see what the 30th category will be.

And then its a good bet there will be more chaos as a result.

Just for the sake of discussion, thought I would post High/Low from each of the rounds. I will stay away from talking about my picks or categories I am judging though.

Round 1:

Loved - Downfall. Finally watched it a bit ago and have watched it a couple times since then. One of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Didn't Love - Rocky vs. Drago. I know I need my man card taken away for not liking Rocky, Goodfellas, or Glengarry. Still think the 1st is too early for this one, and would probably have picked another from the series instead.

Round 2:

Loved - Requiem for a Dream. One of my favorite movies, but it is just brutal to watch. Perfect movie for the category.

Didn't love - Iron Man. I said it before, but don't get the love. Has some funny parts for sure, but think the villains and the movie overall are just average. For my money there are far more interesting superheroes and movies to be had later in the draft.

Round 3:

Loved - Capote. PSH nailed this role, but somehow I had completely passed it over when I was making up my list. Sometimes I get too focused on one or two ideas and don't dig deeper and seem to miss something.

Didn't love - Almost Famous. Probably #1 on my "loved at the time, but don't like at all anymore" list. Just feel it's too sappy and watered down to be interesting anymore. Couple that with the singing on the bus and cliche telling your secrets as the plane crashes scenes and I am out. I do love PSH as Lester Bangs though.

+1 on unsexy sex scene

(blows trumpet)

I will now stentoriously declare that, the sweetness of Mrs. R and the goofiness of the category notwithstanding, KP likes it, there are some selections out there for it, and honestly, switching stuff up in Round Five just seems like a bad move. More importantly, however,

Where were all of you when these dumb categories (okay this one potentially dumb category) were being announced??

Prettymuch echoes my opinion as well, especially Rocky IV. I flirted with the original Rocky for a fight, but I personally think a boxing match goes against the spirit of the category (I'm not the judge, so my opinion is meaningless). I also think the Rocky movies are a little cartoonish in regards to the fights. We've all seen brutal boxing matches, but Rocky puts all of them to shame with the amount of direct punishment delivered. Gatti/Ward, Hagler/Hearns combined have nothing on Rocky.

Rocky 4 is pretty much the best movie of all time. If there was a category for montage, I think the training scene could go #1 overall.

The only movie I've ever seen in the theater with a full-on standing ovation at the end

The scene in The Blues Brothers where the Illinois Nazis jump off the bridge got a standing O in the cinema when I saw it.

I am the judge, so I have no problem with boxing for fight scenes, but variety is good ie I don't want 18 boxing scenes

It had better be good though as my criteria states

The overall movie will be a criteria, but only of minor importance. The fight scene must be memorable. If it is physical I don't want to see air swings. I want to feel the pain.Length of the fight will be a consideration. If it goes on too long and gets boring, it may struggle to reach the top. Too short and unless it is of major impact then it will be penalized.A one punch fight is not really a fight, there must be 2 or more parties involved.I will even consider a gun fight, flight with chickens, literally anything than be considered a fight.

5.19 - Metropolis - Jon Freder sees Moloch - Dream Sequence

Not with me. I've seen the "it's dated" argument in judges' comments in my exactly one previous timdraft and pretty much cringed every time, and that was for music, not film. Film is even harder to be dismissed with that weak sauce, I think. Plus? It's Metropolis! Good grab.

I want to add another category. I really don't care if some people get screwed. Tough luck. I like having 30 categories. The only question is, do we go with prison movie or one of Karma Police's suggestions? Choose.

I with prison movie category, provided you declare it so about 3 or 4 picks before AndyD picks.

I already posted about 15 extra categories. Pick one

Prison movies account for about 2% of all films, what are we possibly going to get from that list that hasn't been gone over dozens of times?

Scenes16. scene where an animal speaks17. scene involving food18. scene that takes place on a boat19. scene that takes place on a plane20. scene involving an offputting odor21. wrestling scene22. scene involving a black person and a white person23. scene that takes place in a park24. scene where someone wears a suit of armor25. phonecall scene26. scene where someone gets a haircut27. raining28. monster29. gross out30. WTF scene
OK forget Prison movie. Here is Norwood's list, minus the ones already on the list. Let's choose one. I kind of like scene that takes place on a plane.

Of those I would probably go phone call. Still think all this is silly since we really haven't even drafted for the supposedly weak one people have posted they have a list started for. Why is it such a bad category?

OK, we need to decide, because I want to update the list. I am going to put up a poll on the first page. The poll will be up for one hour. You have 4 choices:

1. Keep the categories the way they are.

2. Replace shooting film scene with plane scene.

3. Replace shooting film scene with scary scene.

4. Replace shooting film scene with phone scene.

The poll is up. Please vote. In one hour I will tabulate.

I get that this isn't exactly the most democratic way but I need to update the draft tonight and I don't want to leave this hanging.

I vote that we should get rid of the monologue category and replace it with a category involving Oscar winners who pick their nose with their left hand.

All picks made still stand, but they have to moved to another category.
