timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (1 Viewer)

This is from Wiki:

Development of the film began in the early 2000s as a fifth installment in the Alien franchise. Scott and director James Cameron developed ideas for a film that would serve as a prequel to Scott's 1979 science fiction horror film Alien. By 2003, the development of Alien vs. Predator took precedence, and the project remained dormant until 2009 when Scott again showed interest. Spaihts wrote a script for a prequel to the events of the Alien films, but Scott opted for a different direction to avoid repeating cues from those films. In late 2010, Lindelof joined the project to rewrite Spaihts's script, and he and Scott developed a story that precedes the story of Alien but is not directly connected to that franchise. According to Scott, although the film shares "strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak", and takes place in the same universe, Prometheus explores its own mythology and ideas.

That's enough, though.

Yeah, but it's the Outer Space Judge who should make that call, just like the Superhero Judge took a huge, bold, universally-lauded stand and announced that only one pick from the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be tolerated. Frankly, that proclamation was probably the highlight of the draft so far, but I think I'm getting away from my point, which is that the Outer Space Judge should make the decision about Prometheus. Or maybe the OSJ is you, Tim, but I think it's someone else. Not going to check right this minute.

I just think there's a difference between "universe" in a physical sense vs. a literary one. Prometheus may take place in the same physical universe but it's not the same literary one.

The last post has raised a question in my mind which has obsessively bothered me for years:

Is the plural for "dwarf" dwarves or dwarfs?
"Dwarfs" is the third person singular form of the verb "dwarf". "Dwarves" is the plural of the noun "dwarf".

(Please ignore the Disneyfication behind the curtain.)

We're actually watching Prometheus right now. It's interesting that they show the Lawrence of Arabia clip as Prometheus mirrors that story pretty closely with the initial part showing the successes of ambition and the latter the downsides.

Outer Space Judge ruling: I would say a prequel in the same universe with events that directly bear on the later pictures is part and parcel of the same franchise, in the same way that Star Wars episodes I-III are disallowed. So off the list it goes.

Hey, I never gave my criteria - has everyone already taken their space pictures?

40% - Quality of picture

30% - Relevance to category

30% - Popularity (both critical and box office)

Relevance in this category means outer space has to be involved somehow - the movie doesn't necessarily have to take place entirely in space - characters or things being there qualify it, but I will say being there will give it a boost over talking about it or meeting somebody from it. Still, if it's a crappy movie set entirely in space it's still a crappy movie. If it requires MST3K to make it watchable, it's not gonna score high - I'm looking at you, Trumpy.

Since outer space is a location that says nothing about the style of movie, I can say that anything goes here - drama, space opera, horror, comedy, thriller - whatever goes, goes.

Thanks for the work on this, but (yes there is always a but with me)

I think the following should be available, although I can see why they are listed (except the Monty Python ones)

Prometheus - It has not been fully established that they are linked full circle to the Alien movies and Scott has 2 more movies to do so. Given that Prometheus wasn't a massive commercial success and his advancing age I doubt we get the link movies, therefore Prometheus is a stand alone film. If the link is established we have to wait for it to happen.

Star Trek (Reboot) - Why is this not eligible, but the Batman reboot is? Superman Returns is a reboot, but eligible. How do you figure what is and isn't eligible?

Supergirl - Seriously? Whatever, but as cute as Helen Slater is in this, I don't think this should be linked to Superman

The Clone Wars - Who voiced the main characters? Not the same people as in the movie. This is clearly an offshoot and not part of the main movie franchise?

Bourne Legacy - Totally different lead actor and director, this one is probably thin though.

Alien V Predator - This started life as fan fiction, not part of the original Alien series.

Monty Python Life of Brian and Meaning of Life do not have the same characters as Holy Grail, how could this even be considered?

For the Bond franchise I see that you have not listed Never Say Never Again (Good) - Are both Casino Royale picks invalid of just the Daniel Craig one?

Okay, I have yet to find video of the specific scene I want but I need to pick it now...

9.09 -- Last scene from 'Let It Ride', Gambling scene.
 I'd love to have a very good day like Trotter.
Same here and I was 1 race away from doing it dagnabbit. Unfortunately it was the link race (race 6 I think) to the big jackpots.

Still, betting $1000 on 1 horse in the last race, betting $100 for each of your mates on the same horse and having your horse win at 8-1 is some rush. There even was a protest against it to add to the drama.

One of my happiest days and why I love Let it Ride so much.

Superhero Judge Sez: Supergirl is still eligible. Tim, please remove it from the ineligible list.

And of course the Python films are not the same franchise. Come now.

NEVERMIND MY BAD. Supergirl had Marc McClure as Jimmy Olsen in it. That's enough. Tim, disregard. Supergirl ineligible, not that I think this is going to cause many problems. But fix the Python thing.

9.15 Carl floats his house to Paradise Falls, Up (Romantic Gesture)

After a lifetime of wanting to see Paradise Falls but never being able to, Carl's wife Ellie passes away just as he buys tickets for their final adventure. While reminiscing with her childhood scrapbook he finds a new section with photos from their life together, and the final words "Thanks for the adventure--now go have a new one!". Reading this and realizing that she never lived her dream (and after some construction mishaps), Carl resolves to literally fly their home to Paradise Falls in her memory. I can't think of many people more dedicated than that.

Here's the saddest scene in Pixar history, by the way. Carl and Ellie's relationship over time.

The Monty Python films were a mistake on my part. I will remove them.

As for the Star Trek reboot- the difference is old Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy- that makes it part of the franchise. Otherwise it wouldn't be.

As for Clone Wars and Alien vs. Predator, I've never seen them, but they're listed on Wiki as part of the franchise. So is Prometheus.

OK I get the Star Trek one.

I guess if we are gonna have an arbitrar, Wiki is as good as any, but it's kind of depressing to have Prometheus ruled out. Really enjoyed that.

A very affecting scene, but I'm not sure about the Romantic Gesture part.

Hopefully the judge is kind to it.

Seriously though, I was thinking strongly about two picks that making that list ruined for me: the first was I was going to suggest The Wizard of Oz as a "dream sequence"- I could take almost the entire movie! But I forgot that someone took the ####### flying monkeys.

The other one was Prometheus- I was giving serious consideration to it as outer space- I hated it the first time I saw it, but since then I've come to appreciate it more. I didn't realize it was officially part of the Alien franchise.
I see Henry V taken, but I think you forgot to add the whole series: Henry 1-4
What about Henry VIII?

Is any movie of an English royal off limits now?

1. No TV movies.

2. No straight to DVD.

3. Obviously documentaries are fine. Triumph of the Will and The Last Waltz are both documentaries.
What about the movies that have been picked that were not released in the cinema?
I was actually serious about this. 4 movies to date have been selected that were not released in the cinema and no I'm not going to point them out as I see no reason to exclude them.

Yes. :)
well, that worked :)
Guess it was rhetorical.
Sorry. Minor emergencyI'll take 3 Days of the Condor - Spy flick
Nice pick. :)

I had three top choices in the CATEGORY EVERYONE HATES. Shadow of a Vampire and Ed Wood were already taken, so I'm going to snag the other one just in case y'all get any ideas.

Small but ridiculously awesome movie with one of everyone's favorite actors. I'm sorry that, without digging a lot (I will), I can't find a link without some crazy subtitles that only charvik will understand:

9.17 Steve Buscemi freaks out in Living in Oblivion - that category everyone hates

(best part is last minute or two...no, actually, watch the whole damn 8 minutes)

Sports scene

The whole Oscar winning movie of the lead up and eventual fight Rumble in the Jungle between George Foreman and MuhAmmad Ali is linked below, but the crucial area leading up to the scene starts with the actual fight beginning at 1.01.09.

From there we see Ali taunting Foreman with 14 right hand leads and constantly getting into Foremans ear with well placed insults and observations.

Thus begins the Rope a Dope sequence at 1.04.46 with Foreman beating the crap out of Ali and commentary until 1.07.30.

Then we begin the scene I have selected at 1.07.31 until 1.08.10 when Ali conquers Foreman with a carefully staged and cunning plan to defeat the unstoppable George Foreman.

8.05 - Muhammad Ali - "Rope a Dope" - When We Were Kings

When We Were Kings (1.07.31 - 1.08.10)

None of this movie fakery, here's a REAL sports scene.

None of this movie fakery, here's a REAL sports scene.
great pick

edit - (when I thought we were picking sports movies. :bag: )

Shoot Out scene

Brian De Palma has his critics and he has made his fair share of stinkers, but this movie works well.

The standout however, notwithstanding the theatrical performance of Al Capone by De Niro is the stairway shoot out.
