13.04 - RoboCop - Superhero Movie

Back before the recent litany of family friendly cliched superhero films, there was this gory/dystopian/satirical/funny monstrosity that gave a template for how to make an adult superhero film. It's unfortunate that decades later it's still one of the few ever to be made.

Yesterday Krista asked to be released from judging the WTF category. I begged her to stay on, but she did not respond.

If she leaves, we got a real problem here. I never would have allowed this to become a category without a judge in hand, given the task involved. Is anyone willing to step to the plate here?

If you start watching one per night you should be ok by the time the draft ends.

According to Doc Oc's update above, I can pick....

13.09 --

, Best Performance by a Child Actor.According to wiki Tatum is the youngest actor/actress to ever win an Oscar for an acting performance (10 years, 148 days).

I'll do it using Krista's criteria if someone will rank my pick afterwards.

As long as nobody drafts Woolworth's. :topcat:

Ending of Planet of the Apes- shocking scene

Rod Serling enjoyed scripting shocking endings "it's a cookbook!" He must have loved this one in which Taylor (Charlton Heston realizes that's hes been on Earth all along, in a very dramatic fashion...

Dakota Fanning-I am Sam-Child Actor

For how young she was in this movie, i thought she played this role wonderfully and i think she is a very underrated actress IMO

13.17 Kramer v. Kramer - courtroom scene

The scene where Joanna Kramer testifies and is cross-examined ("Are you a failure????"). Will post link later.

ETA: I also have my next pick ready so would ask for nopenissnip on that one, too.

Well, there goes my dad. Dammit!

Make-ups picks:

12.21: Quvenzhané Wallis as Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild (Performance by Child Actor)

This performance was a big deal locally -- the movie was produced in and around New Orleans and almost all the actors are locals. I thought it was just a "whatevs" art film until it started getting Oscar buzz. At age 9, Ms. Wallis was nominated by the Academy for Best Actress. Not a ton on YouTube for a film this recent, but here's a little bit:

Official Trailer

, finale of Lethal Weapon (Fight Scene)I think the realism in this scene is second to none. Director Richard Donner wanted a fight scene that reflecte martial arts that hadn't often been seen in film. Brazilian ju-jitsu master Royce Gracie and two other fight choreographers taught Mel Gibson (Riggs) and Gary Busey (Joshua) some base moves in BJJ and capoeira. Instead of just trading stand-up blows for five minutes, the scene reflects the desperation of both men as they grasp for anything in their immediate environment (Det. Murtaugh's front lawn) that will give them an edge. Bonus points for Riggs' think-fast moment with Murtaugh's night-stick, and for much of the fighting taking place on the ground -- where almost all real fights end up.

I someone watches one of these movies a night, he/she will need a lobotomy.

Round 11

Giant Squid in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Movie scene that scared me as a child

Was about 5 or 6 when I watched this at a drive-in theater. Actually the scene where the sub charged the ship, and all that you could see were lights charging along the water's surface scared me more, but it's a fairly obscure reference and I can't find a solid link.

How many of us have experienced this so far in this draft? Got something in mind, but just can't find the clip.

And how about this one: you seem to recall a certain scene in a movie that will fit one of the categories really well. Then when you go to look for it, either (a) the scene was a lot more "meh" than you remember, or else (b) you can't find the scene at all and you wonder if you're mind's playing tricks on you.
