timdraft #4: Movie Category Draft (3 Viewers)

Just to clarify on Clerks- someone took Jay and Silent Bob earlier, and that eliminated everyone one of the movies in which these two characters appeared. They're all listed in post # 5.
Seriously?

These are all stand alone movies apart from Clerks and Clerks 2

There are lots of movie instances like Jay and Silent Bob where they appear in multitudes of movies, but each is a stand alone product.

But, then again it is me that you keep doing this to, rather than the others.

Are you taking out the Scream movies?

Jay and Silent Bob appear in Scream 3

What about Wayne's World? The T1000 appears in Terminator 2 and Wayne's World?

Trading Places should not have been selected as Mortimer Duke appears in both Trading Places and Coming to America

John Hurt appears as Kane in both Alien and Spaceballs

These are prettymuch the same universe / storyline. Smith even wrote comics to bridge some of the films.

I see the point, but where do your draw the line at this kind of stuff. I editted my post to show 3 examples where you could play this game all day

27.07 Clear and Present Danger (1994) (Shootout)

CIA bigwig Jack Ryan, played by Harrison Ford, goes to Colombia with the FBI director as part of some complex intelligence manuevering revolving around American efforts to "take the drug war to the drug lords," so to speak.

After arriving at the airport, the motorcade of SUVs in which the American dignitiaries and their security escorts are traveling is ambushed during a trip down a long street lined with mid-rise buildings by an RPG-wielding gang of thugs. This is one of the better action sequences I'd seen at the time I caught this one in the theater, and while there may have been many more CGI-laden shootouts since, this one keeps it clean, fairly realistic (although what they were doing driving down such an obviously dangerous street remains a mystery), and full of personal moments, like Ryan's FBI agent friend getting shot during the carnage, and Ryan, without really using a weapon, managing to escape unharmed with the wounded FBI director, who dies almost immediately despite Ryan's heroic efforts. (I think the clip I found cuts out a little before that part but perhaps the judge will remember the ending to the scene.) The shootout advances the plot and provides a wonderful 2-3 minutes of scary, edge-of-your-seat action that drives the rest of the film.

The more I think about it the more links I see, I'll repick the Long-Shot and finish with Sex in a day or so.

Yea, what happens in one is alluded to in others, characters weave in and out, etc.

In all of your other examples, they were more "guest stars" and/or goofs, and not to link the films (maybe Duke was, but it was so minor - I don't even remember him in Coming to America).

In the case of Jay and Silent Bob, I used Wiki, and they listed the films they appeared in. I put all of the films in post #5 at the time it was taken. There is no mention of Scream 3. I think my decision was fair.

In the case of "The Man With No Name", it's not clear that Clint Eastwood is playing the same character or that there is a continuity between the films. That's why "A Fistful of Dollars" was allowed.

Okey dokey.

30.8 - "Forest of No Return" from Babes in Toyland (1961) - Scene that scared you as a kid.

Sometimes I think Disney had

I guess I will go more with the hallucination route for the category. My list was destroyed at the end of the draft, but I think this was one of the best and deepest categories - I guess maybe that depends on what you watch. I will go for a movie that still ####s me up, and I really remember this scene effecting a young KP when it came out:

28.16: The club/party scene from Jacob's Ladder (dream/hallucination scene)

So maybe this is just a way to shoehorn one of my favorite movies into the draft and into a category I was struggling with, but I love this scene and I think it fits. Just couldn't bring myself to take one of the over the top cheesy shootouts from the action movies I had listed, so we have:

29.10:

(shootout)

I can be a grown man and admit when I am wrong, so:

shooting a movie scene1. Singin' In the Rain (Lena Lamont)2. Tropic Thunder3. Martin Landau in Ed Wood4. ending of Sunset Boulevard5. Dom Deluise in Blazing Saddles6. Shadow of a Vampire7. Super 88. Steve Buscemi in Living in Oblivion9. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?10. The Girl Next Door11. Hugo12. In Bruges13. Day For Night14. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back15. Argo16. Zach and Miri Make a Porno17. Sorry for this.

OK, time for my last two picks. Dance and Fight scenes were the deepest categories, and I kept stalling hoping to have the field narrowed in Fight, but I've still got a stack of great options. Thanks for no help, guys...

Fine, let's pick something impressive:

29.06 - Blood and Bone, prison fight - fight scene

Best youtube comment: "It appears Liam Neeson and Chuck Norris had a black kid together"

IIRC KP was a vocal advocate for the integrity of the movie within a movie category, and argued (skillfully, even if I disagreed) against an attempt to delete it from the draft a few rounds in. I imagine he's now apologizing for his advocacy, having seen the results of the selections.

The man with no name (Italian: Uomo senza nome) is a stock character in Western films, but the term is usually applied to the character portrayed by Clint Eastwood in Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Western films; A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966), also known as the "Dollars Trilogy."

The Man with No Name wore the same pancho, black jeans, and smoked a cigarello in all movies. Trivia: The poncho worn by Eastwood was never cleaned before, during, or after any of the filming.

This.

I still stand by my opinion that in theory it was an interesting category. Still love the movies about movies concept, but yeah - it would have been better as a movie category. I think one of the stumbling blocks is that for people who got stumped, I couldn't find a decent list to pull ideas off of online. Combine that with it being a seemingly hard thing to search for on youtube, etc.. and I had trouble coming up with scenes. I had problems in other categories of having ideas written down but not being able to verify the scene, but no category moreso than this one. I still have a lot of 'movies about movies' written down, but can't seem to come up with scenes since they aren't on youtube or either very short or are in montage form.

Still some great picks that were made for it, but honestly I thought it would end up being a stronger category.

Lesson learned for the next movie TimAcer draft - hash out the categories a little more before starting and maybe mull the categories over for a couple days. I assume the next one is starting up in about 2 weeks? ;)

To clarify on my 29.17 pick, I sent the following classroom scene to be taken (the movie name was posted but not the scene):

Precious - Nothing to Write Today

If

doesn't move you, you're a cold, cold person.I will post links to all my scenes as well as my 30th rounder tomorrow (Sunday Singapore time).

First, I'd like to move CASINO ROYALE from Spy Movie to GAMBLING SCENE.

Secondly, I'd like to move MOON from Outer Space movie to MULTIPLE PERFORMANCES

Then . . . I can't find the specific scene I'm looking for on youtube but will check other sources to get the scene to the judge asap. This highly stylized film is about a sound engineer, making his own personal documentary at home, who gets promoted at his day job to become director of the "big-budget" 60s movie. It's practically all movie making, and I love it.

26.04 CQ, Filming a movie

Then, given my move of Casino Royale to gambling scene, I'll select a new film for the spy category that depicts spies working at various functions, in various eras, during the heights of the Cold War era and the present day. This Tony Scott film shows assets being selected, isolated, trained, ditched, and developed; it features bureaucratic CIA investigations, trade craft to circumvent said investigations, East German backstabbing, Vietnamese and Middle Eastern assassinations, West Bank sniper alleys, Chinese prison breaks, political disavowals, and Redford & Pitt.

27.22 Spy Game, spy movie

28.04 The Insider, courtroom scene

29.22 The Last Starfighter, Outer Space movie

I wasn't surprised, because I knew the story, but still I was shocked and astonished.

30.04 127 Hours, Arm Amputation Scene, Shocking Scene

I didn't help here when I took The Aviator off the table. It's the anti-draft for me.

Just listing the draft choices for the one and only category I am judging in this draft.

This is alphabetical order - I immediately copied/pasted/sorted so as to not be influenced by when something is drafted, and of course I never pay attention to who drafted what.

Negative response only; if there's mistake in the Page 1 listing, here's another chance to correct it. TIA.

Should take AT LEAST one week to finish watching/re-watching, ranking and write-ups. I have a feeling this might be the slowest TimDraft judging ever.

Best Portrayal of a Real/Historical Person

Ben Kingsley as Gandhi
Charleton Heston as Moses
Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos
Daniel Day Lewis as Christy Brown
Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln
David Straithairn as Edward R. Murrow

Eric Bana as Mark "Chopper" Read
Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin
Helen Mirren as The Queen
Hillary Swank as Brandon Teena
Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles
John Hurt as Joseph Merrick
Julia Roberts as Erin Brockovich
Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes
Madonna as Eva Peron
Paul Giamatti as Harvey Pekar
Paul Scofield as Sir Thomas More
Peter O' Toole as Lawrence of Arabia
Philip Seymour Hoffman as Capote
Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash
Robert DeNiro as Jake LaMotta
Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday
Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison

19 males, 6 females. The double selections are fasinating - one was predictable (including the roles), and the other is...well, interesting,

Should be fun.

Also, I just want to say, thanks for all the nice words but this is Tim's thing. I just tried my best to keep it moving. Maybe it helped, maybe it didn't and people were just into the draft. But I am not trying to step on toes. But it was nice to almost get to the end without 2 a days.

I would much rather take my time judging than rush through it. Would expect everyone to feel the same. Which means one of Tim's categories should be done by tonight some time.

And, I wasn't the only one keeping track. There were others also. Thanks to everyone who made it a smooth draft

The Nazis one will be done sooner rather than later. The other ones gonna take some time (or other TWO- nobody's stepped up to the plate on dramatic actor in comedy). Anyhow, Acer, you underestimate your contribution to this draft. Without you keeping order it would have fallen apart long ago. This went very smoothly and you are the primary person responsible.

I can't believe no Meryl Streep here. I probably should have gone that way.

I can think of 3 different roles by her that would be top 5. But can't say I was surprised as this draft was testrone rich from alpha to omega.

Did anyone else get to the end and realize with 8 or 5 picks left you hadn't drafted a personal favorite actor/actress or director or film - and couldn't fit them in the remaining categories?

With the exception of 2 I love all of the films I picked and I would watch any of them right now. Instead I have to watch a bunch of crap with multiple performances like Nutty Professor and motion capture Polar Express.

I've been waiting all draft to make this pick - Tim, this one's for you...

30.20 - Iron Sky - Nazi Film.

That should add to the "I haven't seen it and have to watch it" list! I could have gone with a safe pick, but it's the last round of the draft - that should always be a wild and crazy pick. Do something unusual. And Space Nazis from the Dark side of the Moon are

Kumerica, who is the actor from Moon that you want for multiple roles?
I'm sorry. Sam Rockwell is his name.
Isn't he essentially playing the same guy / clone over and over?
Yes and no. He IS playing a clone, and each one has his personality, but they represent his personality at a different stage of his own life . . . it's kinda weird, but they are practically different characters—like JWB today interacting with JWB in 2008. That kinda thing . . .

Problem here is Moon is already on the list for Outer Space Flicks...

Snob

Have you watched Nutty Professor?

Eddie Murphy has made stunning piles of crap over the last 20 years, but this one stands out.

He is sweet as Sherman

A tour de force as Buddy Love

and playing the whole family is a riot.

I'm not saying it's Fellini, but it is a damn entertaining movie with Eddie Murphy playing 3 lead roles and a heap of minor ones. Any movie that has Dave Chapelle as a stand up comic can't be wrong and Jada Pinkett is lovely.

He's never gonna find or watch that movie

Please move Shaun of the Dead from Long-Take to England

Long-Take

I had to find something else for this category and came across this stunning scene involving Eric Bana. Magnificent 3 minute section all in one take

Bana gets off a bus at the airport, strolls around to the underground station in Berlin, realising he has a bunch of hired goons following him, leads them all into the subway and takes on all 5 of them and beats them in one long take. Very happy with this one.

29.21 (28.05 for Tim) - Hanna - Long Take
