Some thoughts on Cuba:

The main complaint, mostly made by Cuban-American politicians and a few hard line conservatives like Sean Hannity, seems to be that we are doing nothing to address the human rights violations that the Cuban government has committed, and we are in effect rewarding the dictatorship and we will help make them rich as they control virtually all of Cuba's land and industry. Both statements are largely true. But I think they are short sided.

The first thing that people have to realize (and sadly they never do) is that it is impossible to do justice to past crimes. We cannot give blacks back the time their ancestors suffered in slavery, we cannot stop the Holocaust from happening 70 years after it happened, we can't give back to the Palestinians the land they lost in 1948. History moves on. The Cuban people suffered greatly under Castro, but there's nothing we can do about that now. We can't undo the regime and create a democracy there. We've tried for 50 years and failed.

...
This is an interesting premise. Do you mean only in the context of foreign relations? Isn't it true that all crimes occurred in the past? Can there never be justice for them?
Cambodia has prosecuted the Khmer Rouge, Germany is still (like right now) prosecuting concentration camp guards, on and on, oh yes there can be justice.
Not really. They've prosecuted a few of the high ranking guys only. For instance Hun Sen was once fairly high in Khmer Rouge - not prosecuted. IIRC he is the prime minister (or life or so).

ETA: The examples you list are domestic court cases. What does American foreign policy have to do with German domestic court cases?

If you want to try the Castro brothers your best analogy would be that Spanish judge that went after Pinochet. He unfortunately having less success with going after Franco's boys
Well my thought is that if all goes well we restore democracy and property owners get their property back and those who committed atrocities are brought to justice. If the USA can do what it can to help promote an environment where that can happen - by pushing our culture, demanding freedom and human rights, by getting our corporations and business in there, by getting Cuban and American travel freed there, by demanding free elections - then would be great. Restoring normal relations could help with that process, but I would hope we actually do that once we get our foot in the door.
Very little of this is going to happen. We're not going to "restore democracy" (I don't think they had democracy in the first place). We're not going to bring people to justice. We're not going to "demand freedom and human rights". We're going to have, hopefully, freer trade. That will have to be enough. I wouldn't expect any of the rest.
Well not out of this administration that's for sure, I'm thinking past 2016.
What did the US do in Vietnam after restoring diplomatic relations? Any war crimes tribunals going up? Human rights abusers denounced?

Ain't. Gonna. Happen.

As an additional point, if it’s too hard for these politicians to cut spending, let’s at least try to avoid increasing spending!! The only way to insure this is a divided government. If you have a republican president, vote for democrats for congress. If you have a democrat president, vote for republicans in congress. This is the only way to create gridlock and stop spending. Don’t believe in slogans, if you have one party in charge of the House, the Senate, and the Presidency, that party, be it republican or democrat, will increase spending; they won’t be able to help themselves.

Towards the end of the speech. I used to really believe this. But now gridlock kind of worries me.

  1. Streamline the current border patrol system. Perhaps we can tighten up the border by simply being more efficient. If we need to spend more money for border patrols, so be it. But this has to be kept low-key, so that we don’t antagonize Mexico. Perhaps we can quietly make significant reductions in the number of illegals.
It seems like this idea has been adopted by the Obama administration and carried out successfully to a degree.

The often verbose Tim sco-shaySpawned a thread of his own yesterday

His famed indecision,

instead led to cheers of hooray

If you've never pronounced it Tim socket

You should try it before you knock it

Don't ask Tim 'bout this mystery

Lest he bore you with history

whilst he strokes his unsheathed pocket rocket

A gentleman named Tim sashay

Had so many things left to say

This speech still represents my best arguments on this issue, so I am going to post it here.
Tim, did you ever figure it out?
Figure what out?
You know, "Huntington Park." Stuff like this:

"These guys can’t help themselves; they’re always going to seek to increase their power. The conservatives always talk a good game about limiting the scope of government, but I’ve noticed they talk a better game when they’re out of power. So I like it when you’ve got the president from one party, and the House and Senate from the other party. Plenty of gridlock. And when stuff does go through, it’s bipartisan and usually important."
Yeah, I used to believe that too obviously. Not so sure anymore. But here is the part of that speech that applies to you, Walking Boot (though I didn't know YOU then) and your comments about Huntington Park:

The people who argue this are mostly nativist by nature, and they are quick to complain about parts of cities where every storefront is written in Spanish. While the arguments against the high economic costs are perfectly legitimate, these arguments are not. The Hispanics that come to America, whether legally or illegally, even though they bring their culture with them, desire overwhelmingly to be Americans and to be treated as Americans. To complain about their culture is quite simply, a bigoted attitude and should be condemned.

Remarkably prophetic, in your case.

I don't necessarily dislike politics, but I don't like discussing it on this board. The level of discourse here is way below the standards of what I'm willing to engage in. I don't blame you Tim... it's been that way since long before you arrived.

I do like fake drafts. Please make it happen.

We used to have a good interesting draft every few months. But the last few times I've tried nobody's been interested. So I've sort of given up.

And Norwood, I would love to raise the level of debate. Perhaps this thread is the means to do just that.
In fact, I've always wanted to have a debate with somebody here. A back and forth debate with rules and judges. Some serious issue like gun control, abortion, illegal immigration, etc. The late JohnJohn (late of this board, anyhow) challenged me to one, but that turned out to be a disaster. With the right people involved, I think a series of debates would be awesome.

Tim and I had a bet that he won last year. As a result I paid the agreed upon charity on his behalf and for the name on the website I wrote Tim Chochet and then stupidly gave my address.

So I now get monthly letters from them addressed to Tim Chochet. :own3d:

Edit: my wife asked me who that is last time and I said "must be a previous homeowner here".

Well I figured YOU out anyway Walking Boot. Guess I'm still working on "it" though.
OK, here it is. As has been pointed out repeatedly as you quoted at the start of this thread, you're oblivious. You lack self-awareness. And you continue to repeat yourself and have the same arguments over and over in multiple threads. And I couldn't take it anymore. So, starting with this post over a year ago, every time you brought up illegal immigration, I replied solely with quotes from here. Everything I've written on these boards on the subject since then came from there. Verbatim. Except when I had to switch out "Tim" for "David". I was just curious how long it would take for you to realize it. But you machine-gun your posts so much, without even bothering to think before you write, you never caught on. You were so oblivious it just wasn't fun anymore. So I'm giving up the shtick. It was a good run, 14 months, about a half-dozen different threads. Hundreds of posts, I've lost count. I started to run out of material from the source and had to repeat, and I know you noticed that, but you still didn't get "it". It was all supposed to point out how repetitive you get. Same arguments, over and over. All the times I brought up "Huntington Park", that "liberals rely on calling their opponents racist", that "illegals broke the laws by coming here therefore are bound not to respect our laws", it all came from there. The quote above "I like it when you’ve got the president from one party, and the House and Senate from the other party. Plenty of gridlock. And when stuff does go through, it’s bipartisan and usually important", from that chapter too.

So, there it is. I like the idea of this thread, so I'm calling off the shtick. I hope this thread works out for you and helps get the boards back on track.

Hmm.

I have to admit that was very ingenious of you. You copied the arguments of a fictional character I created who offered a nativist, racist viewpoint on immigration and you represented it as your own. It did seem familiar to me and I probably should have figured it out. But I never thought that anyone would want to pretend to adopt that sort of thinking for whatever reason. It frankly never occurred to me that you would be proud to make that your own. But whatever. You fooled me all right.

That wasn't from Mr. Ishida's Bookstore. It was from a previous novel. And the character was based on people I've listened to who have made those exact same arguments.

i'd like to join the political discourse arena

the year is 2017. the world's nuclear arsenal have been disarmed by the obummer treaty of 2015. president cruz begins his genocide against democrats. the world declares war to end the genocide.

assume that the genocide is performed by young republicans that would otherwise not be in the military, that the military is exclusively full of republicans and every democrat would be worthless militarily, that all strategic nuclear weaponry is gone (but not things like nuclear powered carriers, etc), and that the united states is at war with a coalition of every single country on the planet. also, the only requirement for victory is that the united states must defend its shores and maintain the federal government long enough to complete ted cruz's second term as president.

could the united states win? i want to see fair argument from both sides here.

I doubt it.

Without nuclear weapons to fall back on, the United States military simply does not have the numbers to face a world wide coalition. Mexico and Canada would become staging grounds for large Russian, Chinese, and Indian armies- we're talking millions of troops here. Our air force would eventually be overwhelmed, even with superior technology. Eventually we would be overrun. Now the question is, could they do it in time to prevent Cruz's 2nd term? With help from every Democrat in this country, I'd say yes.
