SAN DIEGO -- Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson missed practice Friday with a sore neck, a day after colliding with teammate Igor Olshansky.

"Luckily there is nothing serious," San Diego coach Marty Schottenheimer said.

Tomlinson, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, didn't even suit up for practice.

"I don't know what happened; I was just playing football," a remorseful Olshansky said. "It's a physical game, things happen. But it's not purposely."

Also missing from practice Friday were linebackers Shawne Merriman (hamstring) and Donnie Edwards (back), and left tackles Roman Oben (foot) and Leander Jordan (hip).

With Tomlinson down, it meant more work for backup Michael Turner, who averaged nearly six yards on 57 carries with three touchdowns last season.

"I'm just trying to get better every year; just trying to establish myself in this league and I think I am doing a pretty good job of that," Turner said.

Tomlinson counters that Turner, a third-year pro, could be more than a second-stringer if not playing in San Diego.

"I have a lot of confidence in Michael," Tomlinson said. "His value to this team isn't really spoken about but he could be a starter in this league very easily."

Turner considers himself a backup in name only.

"I prepare myself as a starter," he said. "Every week I imagine myself being a starter on this team, even though I know it might not happen. But I prepare myself that way because I'm one play away. L.T. can get hurt any time. I don't wish that on him but it is the nature of the game."

Lots of guys are getting banged up early; this isnt a concern . . .

I heard that he hurt his neck turning to look at a very special broad. He said that it wasn't anything to worry about at this time.

Tomlinson won't play tomorrow, but not because of the neck. He never plays in the first preseason game, and hardly ever plays in the preseason, period.

Last year he had only one carry in the entire preseason. (Which he happened to take 55 yards for a touchdown.)

But the real reason I'm posting in this thread is because I found this totally sweet Tomlinson highlight video:

I can't think of an RB since Barry who could put together a similar video.

That's is exactly what Marty said when Sirius NFL Radio interviewed him at Chargers camp yesterday. Marty seriously doubts that LT2 will play in the pre-season.

I would love to see what he could do behind a line like Seattle's or KC's.
Or with Hudson Hauk back in as oline coach.Did they fire Mauck??
Yes, they fired Mauck:
But after last season the Chargers fired Carl Mauck as offensive line coach and replaced him with Jack Henry and assistant Hal Hunter.

“I'd be lying if I said coaching didn't make a difference,” Olivea said.

The style of the two new coaches recalls that of Hudson Houck, who left after the 2004 season to take over Miami's offensive line. The linemen hail Henry and Hunter as teachers and say each has his specialty.

“You can just get more time for the fundamentals and basics,” center Nick Hardwick said, referring to the discipline that defines top offensive lines. “ . . . It's good. Jack kind of works schemes. Hal is really good with body mechanics.”

At the 1:25 mark that is one hell of a full out block by a skinny speedy white boy. :excited: He zipped right past LT.

 Thought so, Mauck was one of the reasons that the oline sux0r so bad last year. Injuries didnt help.

Timmy Dwight. Speaking of which, if Deion Branch continues his holdout, could the Patriots start two former Charger WRs in Reche Caldwell and Tim Dwight?

Dwight's now on the Jets, and looking to win his second straight AFC East title.

Oops. I knew that. I meant Reche Caldwell and, um, Rashaun Woods?

I read somewhere that, in his career, LT has had about 20 preseason carries over 5 years. Obviously the guy doesn't need the work.
