Top 50 Sandwiches - Ranked by Scoresman (3 Viewers)

Okay, I've put in way too much time on this today. And, man, this was hard and am I now hungry. I'd note I'm a fan of hot sandwiches versus cold. But, here's my top ten:

1. Torta (carne asada version) - Ideally made by some Mexican hole-in-the-wall place such as Tortas El Guero in Phoenix or Verde Lea Market in Cottonwood. I attribute about 10 lbs of the 40 lbs I'm overweight to the torta.
2. Cheesesteak - Particularly, with Cooper sharp cheese and friend onions (for the love of god, no peppers) from a place like Angelo's or John's Roast Pork.
3. Bahn Mi - Don't have a specific place in mind, but man this is such a good sandwich. It's salty, it's sweet, it's somehow filling but doesn't make you feel gross afterwards. Just so, so good.
4. Lobster Roll - Preferably from Red's. I enjoy the cold version with mayo and the hot version with butter (Connecticut style) equally.
5. Hot Italian Beef - Chicago style from a place like Portillo's.
6. Schwarma - I prefer the lamb schwarma but all versions are money.
7. Cuban - some Florida food truck version.
8. Pulled Pork - I prefer it to the Texas beef or the roast pork philly version. Any reputable Texas BBQ joint with a good BBQ sauce will do.
9. Classic Italian - It's so good every time it can't be left off any top ten list. I believe it superior to The Club.
10. Shrimp Po Boy - from Louisiana, presumably.

Honorable mentions:
Tombik Doner and muffuleta (sp?). Both delicious and a genuine surprise the first time I had either one.

Gotta mention: I don't love the Reuben, but will shout it out anyway. Obviously some good NY deli.

Guilty pleasures: Chicken parm sandwich made by some 300 plus lbs Italian guy and Sloppy Joe (actually have a local chef here in AZ that makes a killer one).

There aren’t as many sandwiches as you might think. I had to make two of them to be able to try them and get to 50.

But then I remembered three more I forgot and they replaced them.

Oh I had some killer Venezuelan sandwich in Sedona a couple of months back. It was kind of like a Cuban. Worth mentioning as well.

There’s a few heavy hitters I’ve never tried. Also the googles tells me there’s a whole world of sandwiches outside of America that I’ve never heard of

Don’t know if Arepes qualify but I had one in London, Camden Market, that was one of my best bites ever
Ah, that may be what it was called. It was so good.

Note: it did have meat on it. So it wasn't just the cornbread by itself.

Oooooh the NY Chop Cheese and the Monte Cristo need to be add to guilty pleasures. They don't crack the top ten and can't be eaten regularly but damn they're good.

just seems like it’s in bad taste to do a top 10 and a bunch of honorable mentions before Scoresman has even started his Top 50

The Monte Cristo is very good as an indulgence. I see it is supposed to be a variation of the French croque Monsieur. Not sure how that compares to the croque madame Brutal Penguin mentions earlier in the thread.

I see your point, but I avow I tried to do this with nothing but good taste in mind.

Also, not sure I fully support to slow reveal shtick he's got going. Come out with a bang and put your list in the OP. Don't tease it.

Langer’s #19 is a must on this list. Better than anywhere. Including Katz’s

Welcome the weekend with lunch at Langer’s Delicatessen. Experience the #19 for yourself: hand-cut hot pastrami piled high with cole slaw, Russian dressing and Swiss cheese, all on double-baked rye bread that’s warm on the inside and crunchy out

I don’t really care all that much about spotlighting since I did make this thread for discussions sake, but slow reveals are how these things work.

Duck club at the Tattoed Moose in Charleston. My God

"Go for Mike's Famous Duck Club. It's a Charleston favorite, and named on untold numbers of "best sandwich" lists, but the ingenious combination of duck confit and apple-smoked
bacon cannot be overstated.
Plus, duck fat fries"

No it’s fine. Like I said I don’t mind the other lists.

Having the reveals be slow maximizes the discussion. Just posting the list would be fairly boring.

I haven’t started yet because I wanted Dans cheese thread to finish up and I was still tweaking the rankings.

My apologies then for jumping the proverbial gun.

Currently my favorite sandwich here in So Cal. It is to die for. Just had it in Manhattan Beach. I can’t describe how good this is. Quality of the fish is amazing, kicked up seasoning. Every bite is perfect. Awesome for summer. Nick’s

BLACKENED FISH SANDWICH crunchy cabbage, wild baby arugula, tomato, firestick onions, house made tartar sauce, on a brioche bun .

I’m just hoping we can make moops as upset over here
Being someone who doesn't eat meat, I take my cheese very serious. I won't have too many comments in the sandwich thread until the greatest sandwich ever, a grilled cheese, shows up on the list.

Also love me some shrimp/fish/oyster poboys though
I hate to be the one to be the one to break this to you, but shrimp, fish and oysters are meat.

Yes i know. I hate the term pescatarian so i avoid that. Thanks for the info

One of my favorites right now is making different variations of grilled chicken burgers using fresh ground chicken thigh...usually on a milk bun.

Make a Mexican adobo version with queso fresco, avocado, salsa. A Mediterranean one with shawarma seasoning, tzatziki, tomatoes, red onion, sliced cucumber. And a BBQ cheddar one.

FWIW I think technically a hamburger is a sandwich but I don’t consider it one. Like if I told someone to grab some sandwiches for my fantasy draft or a day at the beach or something and they brought a sack of burgers I’d be like what the hell is wrong with you

I have a feeling your take here may be the more popular opinion but it really makes no sense to me. How is it we can grill a piece of chicken, turkey or pig and put it between two pieces of bread and it’s a sandwich but if I do the same to a cow it’s not?

Just one of those weird caveats IMO

For anyone who truly enjoys sandwiches of a more sophisticated nature, I suggest getting a copy of the cookbook "'wichcraft" by Tom Colicchio. He has a chapter just on what types of bread to use.

Some examples:
Roasted asparagus with red onions, basil, and vacherin
Red wine-braised flank steak with roasted peppers, onions, and gruyere
Fried squid po-boy with avocado and black chili oil

He even includes some dessert sandwiches:
Banana bread with caramel ice cream and pecan brittle
Gingerbread with rum ice cream and poached pears
