I think the scale should be sliding.  Comparing a 51yr old to a 25yr old is simply not fair.
Nope. As you age you lose attractiveness. It’s just how nature works. Everyone gets the same scale and compared equally.  Connolly in her 20s was probably a 9. In her 30s prob 8-9.  In her 40s prob 7-8. And now in her 50s a solid 7. Again that’s very good.  Most 50 yr old women are 4s.

Sure. But we’re talking in context to that role.  They simply couldn’t cast a 25-year-old for that role. They had to go with someone age appropriate. And for that age she’s about as hot as you get.

Yep, we’re not saying anything different. I’m saying for a 50 yr old woman she’s top tier (compared to all other 50 yr old women). Most are 4 or lower.  That doesn’t change the reality that she’s still a 7 at the present time amongst all ages.  Again, impressive for her age.

Kate beckinsale and Halle berry would like a word.

My Hispanic mother sent me this.  Thought it would it would make some heads explode here. :)   Rip away!  Charla is not my mother.

There’s a reason everyone loves Top Gun Maverick… aside from the nostalgia for us “seasoned” folks, aside from the super exciting flight scenes, and even beyond the football scene… it will make hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars for this reason:

It was just entertainment. It didn’t make you feel like garbage about your country, your gender, your race, political party, religion, or values.

There were good guys.

There were bad guys.

There was right and wrong.

The hero was humbled.

Confidence, even arrogance wasn’t shameful… because it was merited.

Someone could be the best or excellent at what they did without apologizing for privilege.

No one was apologizing for social norms, for hierarchies, or authority.

Someone was in charge and someone wasn’t… and that’s life.

Elders were respected and revered, homage and honor was given instead of discarding or dismissing.

Children weren’t saving the world while parents were portrayed as helpless morons.

Duty and responsibility were positives not negatives. Risk was assumed for the benefit of others.

Idiocy wasn’t glorified.

It wasn’t PG but it wasn’t gratuitous with language, stupidity or sex.

Shall I go on? It wasn’t Shakespeare. It wasn’t even Schindler’s List or Shawshank. And yet look how refreshing it was!

Arts and entertainment have been degraded into either purposeful propaganda or indulgent idiocy. And it’s making us sick… and frustrated and miserable. There’s a reason the Bible is in narrative form, it’s because common stories, common heroes, common language and shared experience are good for society— which is why the Enemy undermines all of it. #talktomegoose

Pay attention Hollywood. People will still go to the movies. When they are not rubbish.

Yep, both definitely hotter than Connolly.

But, that's part of the casting....they needed someone attractive but a more girl next door type.  The type that would remain in the city she grew up in and manage a bar near a military base.   Connolly was believable because she was "cute" and "plain jane".    Having a sexy Beckinsale or Berry wouldn't have been as believable.   Those are the worldly Bond girl types.

Before someone @'s me.

She's not "bad looking" but she's also not sexy either which they are trying to make her be.  She's got a pretty face with a flat body from top to bottom with no curves.

She's just plain Jane, girl next door.

7: Cute girl at the club, in classes, at work, in apt building. Definitely cute, but not tops locally.
   7.   I think this is relative to your locale.  You put her in 95% (and I'm probably underestimating) of suburbs and she's right at the top.   Especially for a 51 year old.  I mean she's ####### 51 and she looks like that.

But if you're not taking age into account, which I think is pretty crazy, then of course there are gonna be 20 year olds in a large enough area that are hotter than any 50+ year old (and I'm talking the real life version of women; not some photoshopped crap you see in magazines).    Maybe its just me that gives extra credit to older women that still look so damn sexy at an older age b/c most of their contemporaries don't.   Its like when I see some super fit 50 year old dude and I just have to give him much respect for continuing to maintain that physique at that age.  Of course there are 20 year olds that are in better shape but that's not nearly as impressive.

If you read the rest of my posts on this, you'll see I agree with you.  She looks great for 51.   But that doesn't make her a 9.

Most 51 yr old women are 4 or less, so being a 7 at that age is amazing.   But, she's still a 7.

Oh come on

Well, I'm going tonight.  Taking my nephew as part of his graduation present and a handful of others.  I know it will be cheesy and I'm sure I'll have some eyerolls, but I'm looking forward to it.  I've been to exactly one movie in the theater in the last 13 years, so  this should be fun.  I could use a mindless distraction too, to be honest.

I was trying to put into words why this movie was so enjoyable and I couldn't really do it.  I kept trying to say it was like a throwback movie that wasn't overwhelming and was just dang entertaining but I think that post hit's in on the head.  It was just there for entertainment sake and it did just that.  It was quite refreshing.

13 YEARS?!?!  Dang.

What was that movie you went to 13 yrs ago....Avatar or Precious?

The bold is exactly what it is.

Meh, I think that quoted article is just somebody ranting irrationally about the "good ol' days" and the author's feelings which don't match up to reality.

Re: Jennifer Connolly, always been a fan of her acting. In this film, though, something seemed off about her face.  It was as attractive as ever, just...off, somehow.

TBH, since they were just heaping the nostalgia on to the point of excess, instead of Jennifer Connolly, they should have cast Leah Thompson, or maybe some other female lead/romantic interest that's held up over the years from one of his other 80's era movies (have to exclude Demi Moore though because she would have overshadowed Tom Cruise), because after all, how much did that character have to do in any scene she was in? If anything, it was a waste of Connolly's acting chops.

Exactly on the Demi Moore comment and why Connoly was a good choice....cute, but not hot where she steals scenes from Cruise.

In regards to Connolly's face I agree....probably a combination of seeing wrinkles for the first time in the High Def screen and likely some minor work done to just keep things tight when you hit 40's/50's

Actually I thought her face was CGI. It was too flawless.

I took my son and a few of his friends to see "Adventures of Tin Tin" (I think that's what it was called).  Even for a kids' movie, it was horrible.  I just quit going to movie theaters after that.  Not because that movie was so bad per se, but I just find the concept of watching a movie with strangers very, well, strange.  Especially with advancements in technology, streaming, etc.

But then my wife's family was in town over the Xmas break and we took all the kids to see Sing 2.  Man, the movie theater experience has changed!  We had reserved seats, chairs that reclined all the way, only a handful of others in the room and - the best part - THEY SELL BEER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It was a delightful experience, so I'm excited to go tonight.  I bought 7 tickets and it was only $47.  That's not bad at all.  I guess Tuesdays are discount days?  Pretty pumped for tonight.

I went last week and loved it. Totally forgot Kilmer lost his voice. There were a few things I thought they could've done better like what happened with Charlie and Maverick. Connely is the Admiral's daughter they referred to in the original and Goose names her by name whispering to Mav. Flashbacks made sense as well. Overall it was a fairly well don't movie. I agree with the post above someone shared. There was no fluff, no political BS, just pure fun. Definitely one of those movies you see in theaters. We went to the IMAX and the special effects with the moving septs and all was pretty cool. I sill need to take my mom to see it as she wants to go and rented the first one for me.

I went in with low expectations and LOVED it. My biggest issue was more of the soundtrack then anything. Top Gun Anthem and Kenny Loggins were good. Lady Gaga song I liked but it just didn't feel like the original without a better soundtrack.

See I was just the opposite.  Went in with high expectations and just felt it was "pretty good".

Watched it last weekend.  Blown away.  Absolute masterpiece.
Saw it last night, felt the same way I did after seeing the first one. Loved the plane scenes, didn't really give a rip about the love story. Action scenes updated with new technology makes a huge difference. Lot of times you felt like you were in the cockpit. Was trying to think what to write about it then came in here and read a few comments. This is how movies used to be (and I suppose some still are). Just a good movie, well made, keeps you interested throughout and as Charla's review mentioned, it didn't make you feel bad about being an American/man/warrior/whatever and enjoying a good action flick.

Absolute masterpiece might be a bit much but I left wanting to fly jets like I did after the first one so I'll allow it

I think there’s a good chance Tom and Jennifer had some de-aging CGI FX applied to them.
Tom had a short video before the movie started in my theater thanking fans and people coming back to the movies. I assume it was in everyone’s theaters but I was blown away how much older and kind of haggard he looked in that compared to the movie (granted the movie was filmed mostly pre-COVID a few years ago.)

I saw something where he stopped the Botox and all that kind of stuff and just started letting himself age gracefully. I also assume it’s harder these days to get his hands on that tortured baby blood moisturizer (adrenochrome)

I'm so glad I saw it in the movie theater.  That's where it was meant to be seen.  Was it cheesy?  It was.  Was it predictable?  It absolutely was.  Did it tug at my heartstrings?  I cried like a baby.

In short, it was way better than I thought it was going to be and I loved every second of it.

I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say I lost one of my very best friends 3 weeks ago and I'm close to his son, so I've been struggling with that. This movie made me think about that quite a bit.  Call me a softy, it's fine.  I am.

Thought the same. He's 2 year's older than I am...he's made a deal with the devil. Only realistic explanation.

Right after Tom said something about being thankful everyone was there to watch the movie in person someone sarcastically yelled, "Ah...thanks Tom".  Quite a few people snickered, myself included.  Despite my normal inclinations in this type of situation I added, ..."yeah, tell it to Goose!" 😋

Took the wife out for a date night last night and saw TG after having a great dinner.  She absolutely loved it (was probably the first time she’s been to a movie theater in 4/5 years) and cried at the end.  Crowd was very vocal right from the start of Tom’s pre-movie speech with tons of cheering and applause.  Can’t remember going to a movie with a crowd this into it.  Was a ton of fun.

Liked it a lot. It was good! Of course it was, it was an 80s movie. There's a reason those movies were so enjoyable. They just hit all the parts of the formula that make them so good. They spent the money to do it right and made a really good movie.

It also highlighted what modern movies don't do any more... They sure don't make them like they used to.

Excellent movie.  I have not one complaint.  Loved every over the top, cheesy bit of it.  We laughed, we cheered, and we cried.  Today was a good day.
