 Couple of suggestions.

Vegetable Samosas (frozen) - dip in Cilanto & chive yogurt sauce

Mushroom Risotto (frozen)

6 pack of grapefruit soda

I like the wine:

J W Morris - Gewurztraminer

$2.99 a bottle - yummy, better than the $7-8 a bottle stuff I was getting.
If you like that you have to get the Vinho Verde. It's a white wine from portugal, but its got a little effervescence to it and it's only $2.99/bottle as well.

I love TJ's.

The only complaint I have is that all of their parking lots were designed by the same people who designed the clown car.

Highly recommend the small containers of freshly ground horseradish and crushed garlic. Great for bloody marys and other seasonings.

We really like the LaBoca wines from Argentina. They are $2.99 on the west coast and $3.99 on the east coast. We've tried all types and they are all good wines, especially for the price...

If you haven't tried the new Charles Shaw Gamay Beaujolais then run out and get it. I'm not sure how long it has been around but I'm planning on picking up a case of it when I get the chance. It's $2 bottle of wine that tastes as good or better than anything I've had in the $10-$15 range.

For different reasons, I found myself in four different stores today. Amongst other things, I was looking for some panettone. The local Shaws (bad chain grocery)had them for $4.99. I pass because the same thing was $3.99 last year.

TJ's has their own store brand panettone for $6.99.

Then I'm in a Whole Foods and they have the same size panettone for $22.99  . I'm amused, then angry.

Finally, I'm resigned to going back to Shaws but I stop in a Williams Sonoma to pick up a separate gift. They have panettone there (same size) for $32.99

We're talking flour, eggs, water and some dried fruit here. The difference seems to be the packaging. The Shaws and TJs were in pretty basic cardboard boxes. The Whole Foods had some swanky silk ribbon around the box. The Williams Sonoma came in a tin.

I almost wanted to hang around the Williams Sonoma to mock the purchaser of a $33 loaf of fancy bread with raisins.
You go to four stores during xmas shopping season trying to save a dollar on panettone and feel supeior enough to ridicule someone buying raisin bread?
Do you think spending $33 on something that could be had for $5 in unmockable? I know you aren't new here.
I end up going to Costco, Trader Joe's and Ralph's for food on a regular basis since they all have something I need. Costco is great for fruits, vegetables, and milk, Ralph's has good deals on meat and Trader's Joe's has a lot of specialty items that are expensive elsewhere.

Old Moon old vine Zindandel (CA cental valley) at around $7 is fantastic. Was shocked.

TJ's is one of the few things I miss about Cali. I did all my shopping there. Had to go from TJ's to Whole Foods. What a letdown. I don't miss 2 buck chuck though. :yucky:

I've had 2 buck chuck that was awesome and some that was terrible. Found out they purchase excess grapes and blend them to make the wine. This explains why you get really good stuff sometime and really bad time at others. They don't have TJs in Colo. I usually stop by and pick up stuff when I'm on a business trip. My wife and kids love me coming home with a suitcase full of goodies from TJs. We could most of it here at Whole Foods or Wild Oats, but the cost would be about 2x TJs on food and 3x TJs on wines at the liquor stores.

I just read in the NYTimes that TJs is set to open in NYC very soon. I didn't know they weren't already there.

My favorite TJs item is the Maitre Pierre frozen Alsatian Tart. It's basically a pizza. Small, it has a very thin crust with creme fraiche, carmelized onions, ham, and gruyere. Costs about $4. Easily the best frozen pizza I've ever had.

There are a couple on Long Island, but none in the city itself...VERY psyched for one to open in Manhattan...

I really wonder how TJs will do in Manhattan. There are already so many independent stores offering unique items, TJs will have to gain customers mainly on price.I also read where they typically sell about 3,000 items compared to over 55,000 items at a typical grocery store. Definitely not a one stop place.

Just remembered the other reason I keep going back-Niman Ranch Bacon. Ridiculously good.

It is a valid question...I think that with the brand recogntion and the devoted following, as well as the excellent prices and unique items they will have a shot...

Also will be sellign wine...from what I understand, they have excellent but affordable wines...That will be a hit in Union Square as well...

Their pinapple salsa, cranberry trail mix, and hummus!!!!!!!!!!!! Dang why did i move??? I was trying to find them online so i could order stuff. No dice. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

It's a grocery store right? How much love is there really there to give for a grocery store?

J
Hey guy, do you live on a farm and eat just what you grow? Never been to a grocery store where they have all you need? :loco: Your only option is never been to one. Good luck with that. :D

yes, seriously!!!! TJs rocks
It's no Jungle Jim's.
Bump for Rudnicki, who is going around the innerwebs telling people that Trader Joe's "owns". Do they have a singing cereal character band? I DIDN'T THINK SO.
BTW, I forgot to mention that the cereal character band is on top of a replica of the SS Minnow, which houses the seafood market.O\/\/ned!!!
relax, pal
