Trader Joe's Appreciation Thread (1 Viewer)

I've never been in a Trader Joes, and one just opened up near me this past week. So I went on a fact finding mission.

Fact: Trader Joes is ******* awesome!

You just answered my question! I'm in town until later this morning and was wondering if it was open yet. :goodposting:

Has it been mentioned that their Mac and Cheese is awesome? My kids won't eat Kraft anymore.
yep...but you have to make it just right. usually requires more cooking time. i also like to broil the top for about 2 or 3 minutes to top it off.

After finally getting to enjoy TJ's in the Southeast for a couple years (Atlanta), I moved further south and realized there aren't any at all in Florida. :headbang:

Was talking to a Trader Joes employee. Their top selling food item in the frozen section is the Orange Chicken. Had it a few times and it very good.

Is it possible to go to Trader Joes these days without getting accosted by activists on the way out? Just want to pick up some Mochi and gotta hear about saving the animals or homeless children or whatever the flavor is that day. I tell this woman today that I already signed up for what she's peddling. She says "you're already a full member of the city project for the homeless?" I smile as I'm walking by, "that's right". "Well I'm not with the city project for the homeless. I'm with Amnesty International." What a trickster.
Been going to TJ's for...well pretty much forever and I have never experienced this.
You haven't been to Westwood lately I take it.
It's been awhile.

Trader Joe's rules.

My wife goes there probably once a month - since it's about 35 minutes away. I wish we had one closer.

Was in town for Thanksgiving and stopped by on the way out of town. Grabbed a couple of pizzas, a chicken burrito and a bag of gnocchi with gorgonzola. I've always been a fan but my boyfriend was skeptical, having never been to one. We have had one of the pizzas and the gnocchi and he's now a believer. Bringing an empty cooler up for Christmas. :goodposting:

Anyone seeing the chocolate covered peppermint Joe-Joes this year? My local store has a huge display, but not of the chocolate covered. Those are MIA.

Didn't have an ordinary Thanksgiving. My MIL made chicken breasts, with some typical T'giving sides, mashed tatoes, cranberry sauce. I made a creamy baked ziti which called for a 26 oz. jar of marinara sauce. None of the local supermarkets had 26 oz. All were less. Trader Joes had an amazing basil marinara...26 oz. That was an excellent ziti dish. I picked up a pumpkin cheesecake from Trader Joe's that everyone loved. Not sure if they loved it so much because of that new alcohol infused whipped cream that was on top.

I love that store. The frozen Mahi-Mahi fish burgers are delicious as well as the Chicken Lasagna in a bechamel sauce. One thing is better than the next. When I check out and they ask, 'did you find everything you needed?, being that I just came in for the 'Just the Leaves' lettuce and spend $50, I'd say yes. :goodposting:

Now they have opened a Whole Foods nearby as well. Another dangerous store.

Just got some in the mail from my MIL. She bought them in St.Louis. No TJ's in south Florida.

 Glad to hear you turning your boyfriend over to the darkside!

My prayers have been answered. Kind of.

They are finally going to be opening a Trader Joe's in Florida. Granted it's about 200 miles away in Naples, but it will be worth a day trip every couple of months.

Hallelujah!

It should be opened later this year.

You will drive 3+ hours to a grocery store?

No. I will drive 3 hours to Naples and go to a grocery store while I'm there.

My fandom is wavering. I only go there for a few select things.....my TJ's grocery budget has dropped to about 20% of my total monthly budget.

Their produce sucks. Burnt out on a lot of their sauces.

Been living on the cheap since they opened one here in Burque, but i keep an eye on the circulars they send out & make a trip when there's more than one good sale item. i thought they were overrated when i 1st encountered them in Boston, but have come to love them for one item alone. If you want to get the qualities from extra virgin olive oil that cause people to spend $35-40 a bottle for the best, try TJ's Spanish Olive Oil. It's raw and sharp and peppery but finishes roundly enough to compete with the real thing. Not only for salads - on roasted veggies, floating some on top of a soup or stew, dressing your pasta with it before putting on your sauce and, especially, dipping some great ciabatta bread in it. I even dunked some Cheerios - not half bad. Dirty little secret: Italians use more Spanish olive oil than they do their own, cuz they get better money for what they press. $7.99 @ TJs.

Here's another dirty little secret - a lot of the 'Italian' olive oil you buy is actually Spanish. There's just simply more Spanish olive oil than Italian and it's not as well known.

I am in the same boat but I think that is because, iirc, you are a paleo eater. TJ's isn't great for that.I still go there around once a month to stock up on their wild caught frozen fish, canned tuna, salmon & sardines.

I'm not sure I'd classify myself as a paleo eater. I'll get the canned tuna, deli turkey/ham, bananas, toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, pasta, OJ, rice pudding, almond milk.....that's about it.

I used to do a lot of shopping at TJ until I found myself throwing out expired food all the time. Then I started really checking the expiration dates. ALL of them were that day or at most two days into the future. I started asking other people and they all had the same experience. TJ sells food that's about to expire.

Check those dates before you purchase.

:goodposting: Their produce is awful. Nothing fresh or local at all.
