U2 - Community rankings - FIN - #4 Sunday Bloody Sunday, #3 - One, #2 - Bad, #1 - Where the Streets Have No Name -Spotify links, thanks to Krista4 (1 Viewer)

I'm doing the ranking engine, and I love when I have two I don't care so much about coming up, but I'm increasingly (maybe 1/2 through) getting these ridiculous choices at the top of my list like "Where The Streets Have No Name" vs. "Sunday Bloody Sunday."  Unlike when I labored over the Beatles rankings, I'm just going to listen through one more time and then make a decision and stick to it.  I think.

:lmao:   Oh, to be this young and naïve again!

🤣

Here’s the thing for me, on any given day, my rankings will be slightly different. I connect more with one song due to my mood, or something that happened that day, than I do a different song I had ranked higher previously. So there really is no such thing as a definitive ranking for me. It would be a fruitless (and endless) exercise to come up with one. So I settled on my universe of songs, did the ranking engine, reviewed the results and made a couple small tweaks, and submitted it as final. That was my ranking. For that day. It would be different today, but what’s the point in submitting today’s list?  It will just be different tomorrow.

@Pip's Invitation @Alex P Keaton Another Time, Another Place is currently ~#80 for me.  Not as high as you guys would have it, but better than its fate in the original list.
49. Or, about where you have Bullet the Blue Sky. 🤔

In my most recent re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-ranking, Another Time Another Place moved up to #69.  Why?  Beats me!

I now have 114 songs since I found some I'd accidentally deleted somewhere along the way.  I started my new ranking by putting the numbers 1-114 on the page, filling in Bullet the Blue Sky at #43, and going from there.  ;)

Sorry for asking, but can't find the initial call for lists. I know deadline is April 1, but not sure how many ranked songs are requested. Can someone clarify? I'm in, just have to clarify that detail.

At least 25, with no real upper limit.  JML said something like, once you hit 25, you should feel free to keep listing until you get to something you are meh or worse about, so just a list of what you like enough to want to rank.  He has a really good system for dealing with the fact we'll all have different numbers of songs we rank.

Exccellent, thanks for clarifying.

I just kept ranking songs until I hit Bullet.   But then I decided going beyond 100 was too much work, so I stopped there. ;)

Except for Bullet the Blue Sky.

For that one, I said outside the top 50 is insane. Did you put it at 50 on the dot to avoid that designation? 😄
Not the first time i pass the definition for insane. Where i rank it this time will be certifiable....if thats the criteria

No. 9

Sorry, just killing time until April 1.
April 1 is a soft deadline. I will be @ anyone who has posted in this thread over the next two days that hasnt submitted a list. Depending on how long some people need, theres your deadline. No hurry.

Hey, a coincidence. 114 is where I have Bullet the Blue Sky

Yep. As krista said, pm your list when it is ready. Ive already received lists longer than the original 228. I have received a few 25 lists. Wherever you want ti stop. No stipulation on including every era. You can include the first 25 songs recorded or the last 25 or whaetevr

Wise man.

Just a clarification question:

Do you want these lists starting with #1 or starting with our lowest rank song?  Or does it matter?

TIA

@John Maddens Lunchbox, I’m curious to know how many lists you have so far?  You can count mine if you’d like since I’ll submit a finalxinfinity one by 4/1.

Also this is my official plea to @Ghost Riderto submit one; he said in the LZ thread he hadn’t had time, but he was one of the great prolific posters here so I’d love to see him weigh in officially!

I have about 20 lists so far. Have started PMing people who have been in the thread. I am sure some who have submitted lists, may want to tinker, which is fine. Just PM a final list and we’re all good.

The 1 April deadline is soft. A couple of people have responded that they may need more time, so i am flexible with the date.

I had "Sunday Bloody Sunday" stuck in my head for a couple of days, and then coincidentally it came up on First Wave channel on Sirius.  I'm in my car about twice a month, so it was crazy to hear it when I already had it in my thoughts.  So now I'm thinking, why is this not my #1 song?

:feverishlyrejiggeringmytop10again:

I just messaged my brother to try to get him to submit at least 25.  He is the biggest U2 fan I know, but he's hesitated on the "it changes day to day" basis.  I know "Where The Streets Have No Name" is his #1.  :)

Several of the people i pm’d said similar. Whatever it is when they hit submit is fine lol.

I have several more lists. Might extend it past April 1 to allow for a few that need more time

@Mr. Landryand @Just Win BabyWere not pm’d as they had recent replies to say they were doing lists.

As an fyi i will not be naming people when listing highest (or lowest) rankings. People are welcome to talk about their rankings once posted, but just dont feel comfortable saying eg

Anarchy99 highest ranker of Numb at #23 etc.

it will just be eg

Bullet the Blue Sky

Top 25 ranks - 3, 7, 22, 24

Lowest Rank - 117.

Not on 17 lists

or something like that

As an fyi, the more lists i get the more newer songs are dropping. Very few of us are going deep enough to include past HTDAAB.

All good, I expected as much. Will see how my formula reacts to all this

Hope I didn’t screw up your formula with my picks.  I followed U2 extensively in the late 80’s and early 90’s, but nada after that.

Your brother has good taste.

Which means maybe he’ll rank Bullet the Blue Sky higher (Binky: lower) than you. 😉

He isn't going to do a list.  :kicksrock:   Didn't say why, and I'm not going to push it.  He had sent me an informal list a few weeks back of around 30 of his favorites, and Bullet was on there.

Nah, no chance. The more lists i get the less chance any individual has on the overall rankings. In the first 150 picks eg 250-100 we will only see the few if us who have ranked a lot.

I will probably have about 50 of anarchy99s list added to my original, so i will have 278 minus Ave Maria, Pop Muzik and NLOH 2. Get On Your Boots will still rank last no matter how deep i go.

Petition to be allowed to have seven songs ranked #1

Signed,

Im more worried about the bottom end of the rankings at the moment lol, some damn good songs are getting missed in lists of 25-50 and they will be punished accordingly. Should be fun to see how the top end shakes out but expect the 1979-1991 era to dominate. .

:(  Just took a quick look at my list, and I'd consider the top 90* to be very good songs.  Then there are another 25** that I just happen to like but could understand why they wouldn't be on others' lists.  I suspect the five*** post-2000 songs I have in my top 32**** are going to suffer.

An update.

I have close to 30 lists now.

Up to S on anarchys extra songs.

April 1 is a soft deadline. A hard deadline might be closer to a week later. Let me know if you need more time to send me your lists.

I wont chase people up further.

The maths for this is quite complicated so need to make sure its right before i close up and send the new overall rankings.

I just sent mine, mostly to put myself out of my misery.  Considered putting my top seven in a random number generator, as they're all so close to one another for me.  I also considered putting some post-2000 stuff higher since those songs are losing out overall, but that smacked of voter fraud.  :)   Can't wait to see the next set of results and hear what people have to say about their favorites (in some instances, again)!

Ive already moved a couple of the “Songs” stuff into my top 25. I am much more interested in hearing them again than some of the pre Joshua Tree stuff. I think one of the songs rose over 160 places in my rankings haha. (little Things that give you away). Bullet dropped about 60, but it will rank higher this time around....i think.

Some songs are massive outliers, as would be expected in 30 lists. The low or non ranking outliers arent going to doom songs this time. Hopefully. Will see how the maths works.

I hope that the volume of lists will help smooth that, as you said.  There's a top 20 song from the first countdown that I don't have on my list at all, but I'm glad that my omitting it won't have a big effect.  Obviously I'm missing a connection to that song that most people have, and I'd feel bad if my outlier status penalized it much.

Finally heard a U2 song on the radio and let it play all the way through (One). Was so sick of hearing them that no matter what song came on, it was an insta fast forward or station change. Baby steps. With time I will eventually embrace hearing them again.

There are two songs from the first countdown's top 20 that are not in my 50 favorites. You ranked more than 50, right?

I finished and submitted my list.   I have always liked and respected U2 but I am not a big fan like many of you.   I definitely don’t have deep tracks included and am curious to see how my taste compares to the overall list from bigger fans.

These music ranking threads are fantastic.   Thanks to those of you that will make this one happen.

Thats fair enough. Thank you for contributing.

To be honest U2 aren’t even in my top 5 favorite artists, live acts yes, but not recorded. No one here wants to see me do a Royksopp countdown lol

That said I have enjoyed U2s long career and its still going. Remarkable longevity in a live today, die tomorrow industry.

This whole exercise has made me appreciate them more.

There are three songs from the first list’s Top 20 that did not make my list of 71.

I now have 31 lists. A few more are expected. Frankly that is fantastic.

The variety has me scratching my head. Received a long and detailed list which showed serious effort and hard work. The number one song on this list however baffles me. I am hoping i get an edit, but if not, all good. It will count. Some songs left of lists will surprise as well.

Just quickly going through the lists.

One is suprisingly low on several lists. It is absent on 3 lists.

Where the Streets Have No Name, One AND Bad are not in one rankers 25. This is the only list so far without Bad and Where the Streets Have No Name.

I have no issue with this list, personal preference and all. It’s not like they put Landlady at Number 1 either. Rest of the list is entirely reasonable
