Bills RB Fred Jackson suffered a hand injury in the first half and head coach Chan Gailey said he will miss the rest of the preseason.

Fred hurt his hand and we hope to be able to get him back for the first game,” said Chan Gailey. “We’re not sure.”

Marshawn Lynch suffered an ankle injury that is Gailey did not know the immediate severity of.

More on this on the home page at Buffalobills.com later tonight.
Edited to include M Lynch injury in updated Buffalobills.com post. Original post said Jackson was also the one with the ankle injury.

No wonder Spiller barely played. Once Chan Gailey saw Fred and Marshawn go down, he pulled Spiller.

I don't think I can draft any BUF player though.

man, what a fall it's been for lynch.everybody used to be scooping him up at drafts screaming, "BEEEEAAASSST MODE!!!!!!!", and now he can't even get bolded.

Sounds like a broken left hand for FJax.

LANDOVER, Md. -- The Buffalo Bills' backfield took a major hit Friday night as running backs Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch were hurt early in the 42-17 preseason-opening loss to the Washington Redskins.

Jackson is believed to have a broken left hand, while Lynch hobbled off with an injured ankle.

Jackson's injury is the most serious as head coach Chan Gailey said Jackson will miss the rest of the preseason and may not be ready for the start of the regular season. Jackson was on the sideline wearing a soft cast on his hand.

"We hope to be able to get him back for the first game," Gailey said, "[but] not sure."

Gailey does not know the extent of Lynch's injury, but he also may be out a while.

Jackson and Lynch went down on the Bills' first offensive possession. Jackson was hurt on the second play from scrimmage when he was brought down by the face mask after a 7-yard run. Their absence prevented Gailey from utilizing some of the plays he installed for the game.

"When we lost those two guys we lost an awful lot of stuff we were trying to do in this ball game," he said. "Those of you who watch practice saw a lot of the two tailback stuff and we were trying to use that quite a bit tonight. That kind of went out the gate when those two guys went down."

They are the team's most experienced backs. Jackson led the team in rushing last season after Lynch was tops in yards the previous two years. Now C.J. Spiller, fellow rookie Joique Bell and Chad Simpson are the only healthy ball carriers.

"It hurts," Gailey said. "Thank goodness it's preseason. When we get to early September it's going to be 0-0 on the win-loss column, and thank goodness for that. But we've got to find out who can do what in these next three ball games and get ourselves ready for that first [regular season game]. That's the biggest thing."

Rookie Alex Carrington suffered an undisclosed injury, but Gailey said it was minor and he should practice next week.

Hi TF,Looks like you just signed up in February so you probably didn't know but the Shark Pool really frowns on cheering when players get hurt. We understand you might own Spiller or Lynch and perhaps that helps your team out but it also could cripple another owner's team and in general we try not to cheer it on here. A better way to discuss it would be something like "If Fred Jackson misses time, maybe this will mean Lynch actually stays in Buffalo." or "With this unfortunate news I guess we'll see more of CJ SPiller than we first anticipated." Like I said this looks like your 1st preseason here at the SP, welcome aboard. We just try not to jump up and down when players go down because it could always be your team that gets hit next. Cheers

He's just telling him how it is since he's new.

Call me crazy but as Lynch owner I actually like the idea of a Lynch/Spiller backfield!

Lynch is a flex player for me and I feel I could count on him for 8-12 pts/wk if Fred were gone.

Just a thought.

Possibly, if Fred Jackson were out for the year which is not the case.

The only thing really fantasy relevant about this is that this does give spiller w chance to get first team reps in camp. That could lead to the passing of the torch if spiller can make the most out of that opportunity.

Spiller had the worst YPC of any RB in the first game as well...just sayin
You've just been anti-Spiller from the start. Did he shoot your puppy? You're really going to say 4 for 16 in the preseason is bad?Cris Carter: "Come on man!"
Just trying to save everyone's FF team...a mix between a Reggie Bush and Darren McFadden. Yall will see.Did I lie....it was the worst YPC of all the Bills RB's.

It's called human decency. It's way unclool to cheer for an injury to another. This board is built on being decent to each other. There are other boards out there where applauding an injury is common place as well as a great deal of negative dooshbaggery towards other board members. I see you're new here too. Be cool to others here and you'll do just fine....

No one else here drinks beer on Friday night and ever says something possibly inappropriate? Lighten up. Its not like I was cheering a horrible injury.

It takes effort to foster a feeling of good will among posters and it is worth the effort. I much prefer the posts that discuss player's skill and utilization over those with personal attacks.

I concur with the :football: from MOP and The Fanatic. Always appreciate Tater as well.

I think you misspelled, "oops, I'm sorry, I didn't realize people acted with some decency here and I'll try to do so from now on".

This is becoming a :goodposting: of a thread....

It was one word....

:not that big of a deal :

Back on topic...

I thought Lynch looked pretty good in the very little time he was in action.

Spiller should get a lot more touches in the preseason.

Gut tells me that FJax will still be the primary guy for Gailey once he's back.

What this does for folks that are counting on Fred Jackson to lead this group is provide maximum value on him. He was already going very late and this news should drop him another round minimum.

Not sure that will be the case, but if you believed in Jackson before and find out he will return in week one or two, then this news is not bad news for Jackson wannabe owners.

Fanatic thanks man. I needed that. Seriously you have given me a lot to think about in terms of my general outlook on life and how I behave myself on this board. I'll do my best to try and correct my behavior and will be sure to applaud efforts t educate new posters like me in the future. I now realize the serious damage that comments like that one inflict and why they deserve a lecture on ethics. Thanks for opening my eyes

Hopefully Fred Jackson will be ok.

:P

The Bills only played two of their starting O-linemen last night, and don't have much depth on it. Last year, while horrible at pass blocking, they were actually pretty decent at run blocking. The Bills finished 9th in the NFL in Yards per Attempt on the ground.

Should be interesting to see if Joique Bell makes the team. Seems like he had a decent game after I've heard his name quite a bit out of camp as well.

I hope nobody was taking Fjax as a starting RB so this shouldn't affect your opin of him that much at this point in time.

I agree with the posters that suggested it just drops his ADP down another round or two so he's a great late round gamble to stash.

Some get it, some don't. :ptts: As for the topic at hand: Fred Jackson came in handy for me last Season, and this OffSeason, after the Bills drafted Spiller, I took another look at him vs Lynch vs Spiller, and came away with the impression that, all other things being equal, that Jackson would get the lion's share of touches out of the Bills RB stable, and be reasonably productive enough with them to consistently post solid RB2-3 Stats with opportunity for sporadic RB1-2 efforts...an ideal Flex, and especially Best Ball Format RB, especially where you can acquire him. Due largely to the fact that Your Average Joe overvalues rookies with impressive collegiate resumes who have never logged a single regular season NFL down (Spiller), and known commodities (Lynch) have their own independent value, Fred was available at a bargain price prior to last night's injury, and now he's going to come even cheaper.I LOVED CJSpiller in College. I'd love to see him perform well in the NFL. I'm just not convinced yet that he's the kind of Player who can 'create his own shot', and with this incarnation of the Bills Offense for 2010, I think it's going to take some time for him to have a significant statistical impact. I don't think Buffalo is going to be a very good Team this Season. That tells me that for a Player to have statistical relevance, he's not only going to have to have talent, but the mental toughness to give optimal effort through many long Sundays. That can be tough on vets, but even more so on Rookies, most of whom are faced with circumstances they've NEVER faced, from a success standpoint, in their entire careers. We don't know if Spiller's got the willpower to sustain the kind of punishment a Buffalo RB is going to get dealt, and continue to 'want to' play beyond one's ability down after down, in negative scoreboard situations I think the Bills are going to find themselves in plenty of. It takes a VERY special Player to do that. Fred is that guy. He plays his ### off every single down, no matter the cicumstances/how bad things are, and there's going to be plenty of that in Buffalo this Season. Fred's been there, and done that, and I've seen that he has the talent, and the 'want to'/drive, to make something out of the mess that is Buffalo's Offense. Fred runs 'angry'/with passion/with desire and has a 'me against the world' playing style that I don't think you see very often, 'if it's gonna be, it's up to me', if you will.I could be wrong, but I feel great about where I'm getting Fred in Drafts right now, and am looking forward to getting him even cheaper in upcoming Drafts. He runs hard, blocks, can catch the ball, and puts vigorous effort in every snap he plays, no matter the score, down or distance. Fred has been, and will continue to be, an RB who outperforms his Draft Position, and help your efforts more than hurt them in 2010, IMO.It's not so much going out of your way to acquire Fred, but rather by waiting, and scooping him up later, you can use your earlier picks to strengthen your Roster at other positions, and still get that production long after it should be gone off the board. Value, plain and simple.

Quick note - drop the cat fighting and all talk that isn't directed to Football please. There are lots of boards where it's mostly whining and the stuff we saw in this one. Go find one of those please if that's your thing. If you want to keep it to Football, please do so here. Thanks.

This is the way I feel about it too. Spiller will get some time with the first team now. But in the end, Spiller is going to have to prove he can be a bell cow to get the bulk of the carries. jackson has a few years in the league and a great audition last year. Is there a chance Spiller hits the ground running (pun intended) and tears it up and never lets go of the starting job? Sure, but I think it's remote...

Fred Jackson out 4-6 weeks, Marshawn Lynch out 3-4 weeks

Posted by Mike Florio on August 15, 2010 1:53 PM ET

Bills running back Fred Jackson suffered a broken hand on Friday night against the Redskins. Coach Chan Gailey had hoped that the tailback would miss only the balance of the preseason.

It now appears that, at a minimum, Jackson will miss at least the first game of the regular season.

According to Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News, Jackson is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Four weeks from today, the Bills open the season against the Dolphins.

But the man most likely to benefit from Jackson's absence won't be able to try to leapfrog him on the depth chart. Per Gaughan, running back Marshawn Lynch is expected to miss three-to-four weeks with a sprained ankle.

The injuries will give reserves Joquie Bell and Chad Simpson more reps in the preseason, and more chances to earn jobs. The Bills also could look for veteran help.

Gailey previously has worked with Kolby Smith in Kansas City; he recently was released by the Broncos.

If Spiller doesn't start the season I'll eat my hat. The team has already moved on from Lynch. Jackson is an average at best back who absolutely disappeared for the Bills in several games last year and I think went for a stretch of ten games or more last season without a run over 20 yards. Jackson got over 1/5 of his yards for the season in one game against a 3rd string Colts D that weren't even trying. Take away that one game and you have a below average season for a starting RB.

Unless Spiller is literally a total mirage in terms of talent, he's the Bills starter from here on out. Bank on it.

:pickle: Jackson was the 12th highest scoring RB in weeks 1-16 in my league.
