If you like Kozelek, try Mark Lanegan, specifically 'Bubblegum' or 'Field Songs' but the majority of his catalog is amazing. He has a low, rough voice that works so well, and his writing is damn good. Fans of QOTSA will know who he is, as he's been on a few of their albums as well. He originally brought together the Screaming Trees in the '90's. They were a minor part of the Seattle grunge movement.  Another Seattle native, Damien Jurado, writes beautiful melodies with lyrics that are spot on.

Also, in that same vein, a Portland native, M Ward. I'd recommend any of his albums, but this is a nice introduction.

Not a fan of the religious leanings,  but LOVE their sound.  Gretchen and FHL were in heavy rotation for me in HS.
Me either. But that was all Sam Taylor's influence.  They've distanced themselves from over the last 20 years or so but that rep still follows them.

For 40+ years, there's been no doubt in my mind who the greatest American rock band of all time - hits, anthems, dominated the scene, crossed genres, classic songwriting, immense chops - is but, unless you knew it was me suggesting, it would take 4-5 pgs before they were guessed. even tho their driving force has been dead since the 70s, I'd call that underrated

The Osmands are pretty great

Eh, I think both of these get just the right amount of praise.
I like Wilco, but let's face it, out of their whole catalog, they've had one amazing album, a couple of good ones, and the rest are very meh. Their fans can also be insufferable. They act like Wilco is the second coming of the Dead.

Volbeat.  Good, straight-ahead hard rock band in today's modern rock scene.  Catchy songs and great guitar work on their last album.

ok... they're massive, and probably in most people's over-rated category. and for music snobby fans, they've pretty much circled around to being universally loathed. so I'm going to say, U2. I consider their early catalog to be soooo good, that IMO, this loathing and over-rating business is overlooking and underrating all of that amazing early stuff (and the very occasional recent single) because people can't stand to even see Bono any more.

I think U2 has stayed in the forefront of the public consciousness longer.

I watched The Defiant Ones on HBO last weekend- and was cool to see Petty. guy was amazing.. and the music stands up really well, even though he seems like one of the "classic rock" guys who isn't getting his due on the classic rock stations or via covers by newer bands. as such- I'd give Petty more credit for being underrated. caveat- I don't listen to classic rock stations unless I've rented a car for our once or twice a year trip to the maryland shore... so I could be misstating my case.

Dinosaur Jr

At the very least because J. Mascis is one of the most underrated guitarists ever.
J Mascis got pissed at me at a show once for having the temerity to look at both him and Lou Barlow in succession.

True story. He leaned into the mic and said "well, somebody has a problem."

Huh. Yeah, J, it's you.

Agreed.  Going to the Joshua Tree tour this week in New Orleans, and they're practically giving away tickets.  Nosebleed seats on Stubhub for $10.

Edit: and that's with Beck opening.

Had a similar situation with Grant Hart once. Man, he was a pompous ###. ####ty show too. His guitar player bailed on him before the show and he had improvise. The set sucked, but he kept yelling at people for talking while they were playing. I think he ended up playing to a crowd of about 20 people by the time he was done.

I still remember when I was constantly mail-ordering records from the Maximum Rock n Roll classifieds, and stumbled upon a band from Boston called Deep Wound. I still have that 7" somewhere. Later turned into Dinosaur (Jr.) and Sebedoh. Lou's anxiety song!

Maybe another old punk to consider, as far as musicianship, is Mike Watt. Incredible musician. Not a huge fan of a lot of his stuff, but Contemplating the Engine Room is still great. Really fun to see live. That man can play some bass.
