Underrated Bands (2 Viewers)

Tool sells out arenas in minutes. Deftones still play House of Blues.

Their albums are full of everything. Sludgy riffs, shoegaze, up tempo pummelers, gorgeous melodies, electronic elements, there's a little of everything melded together into a glorious soup. They're the most unique and constantly evolving band in hard rock/metal over the last 20 years.
This is a bold statement, but I think you just might be right.  IMO one of the best bands of the last 20 years.

Baby Blue is such a great song.
I listened to this version a bunch in my high school years.

Phil Keaggy was a hero of mine (a Christian musician who is one of the best guitarists in the world).  Man, I haven't thought about him in years.  My first road trip without my parents was with a HS friend when I was 16 to go see Keaggy play in Kansas City in 1994.

Walk into this world...
With your....head up HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH.

See, now compare a song like that, "Bloody Cape", or "7 Words" to something like "Hearts/Wires", "Beauty School", or "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event" and the whole picture starts to come into focus.

Because the cut off is 3 albums - Incubus.  Label got to them starting with Morning View, although they have still knocked out a few good ones since.  Fungus, SCIENCE, and Make Yourself though - all fantastic beginning to end.

The Josh Homme projects probably belong too.  Although I didn't really get into either Queens or EoDM until internet radio, so I don't think I've ever listened to any of their albums beginning to end.

Then circle back to Nosebleed and Rickets then zag and go to the acoustic version of Be Quiet and Drive.

Go all the way back to Kyuss.  They have some great stuff, still my favorite of all Homme's bands.

And even though, I don't like them as much, songs like "Lucky You" complete the oeuvre.

P.S. That acoustic version of BQAD shows just what an incredible song that is.  I think I like it better than the original, even though it's entirely different.  What a great chord progression.

I thought the album version was very forgettable and was very surprised they released it as a single.  I stumbled on the acoustic version in the middle of the night in college trying to find anything to do but finish the paper due in 6 hours.  I have no idea how many times I ended up listening to it that night.  Mind. Blown.

Agree that it's not among my favorites either, but it's probably the song most frequently called out by people I know that were lukewarm on the band as the one that got them into deftones.  More so even than anything on White Pony, which was arguably their most influential and critically revered release.

We'll he's not Beethoven but the guy has had an unexpectedly great run and produces some awesome music.
Like his music or not, the guy is supremely talented.

Loser was a catchy tune when it came out in '91, but I assumed Beck would be a one hit wonder at the time. I was just a little off.

The fact he is a Scientologist bums me out though.

Black Crowes, Kinks and The Cult already mentioned.

Surprised the Tragically Hip haven't been mentioned. Corrosion of Conformaty had a nice run of 5-6 albums. And Iron Maiden if they qualify for this.

Another New Orleans favorite to add to the list

Anders Osborne
Yeah, if we're including performers and not just bands I'd also throw in Amanda Shaw.  But you could add about two dozen New Orleans names to that list.

I love Incubus but they have about the right amount of adoration.

Queens of the Stone Age about the same.

Anders' "Band" is almost as important as Anders these days - He's been sticking with Eric McFadden, Brady Blades and the Buddha on the Bass - Carl Dufrene Jr. - as a "band" they are fantastic.

I didn't realize that.  I haven't seen him lately, but Flower Box came out less than a year ago and had a huge number of different musicians on it.

Remember the old (long hair) days when he had Theresa on stage playing violin? What a sight to behold. Couldn't take take my eyes off her.

From the mid-90's New Orleans scene - Royal Fingerbowl flew way under the radar, then burned out, presumably due to alcoholism and other vices.

Yes - They were fantastic - sadly other things got in Anders way. He's rocking one day at a time now.
