Unrest in Milwaukee (1 Viewer)

It is. Wisconsin as a whole has a teacher shortage. The salary difference between wisconsin and neighboring states is growing. Therefore less desirable schools that teachers have to worry about things like their cars getting vandalized or getting t-boned on their way home have even more trouble filling jobs. Throw in the residency requirement and it is easy to see why they have difficulty getting good young teachers.

Hmmm...Olaf's article above said the median salary for teachers in WI is 73K, which is one of the highest in the US.  What are those other State's median averages?

Are you really saying that every teacher in a lousy school district are poor and that there is no blame to be assigned to the parents who teach their children how to twerk and not how to read?
Of course not. I am saying that there are bad teachers there because they need to have teachers and do not have people waiting to fill the spots. Hard to get rid of a subpar teacher when you don't have a better backup.

How many years have you been in education?

Median salary is not important for recruiting. Starting salary is. Starting in MPS is 41k. Starting in Libertyville, IL just over the border is 52k.

One of those is a good district in a safe area. One will likely have you starting in a terrible neighborhood. One of those makes you live in Milwaukee. One doesnt. Real hard choice.

I believe the residency restriction was lifted 3 or 4 years ago (not sure if that came with ACT 10 or if it was in a separate bill), so they are not required to live in Milwaukee anymore.

The left sued to overturn the law but failed.

"My son is gone due to the police killing my son," a distraught Mildred Haynes told the Journal Sentinel on Sunday

Smith's younger sister, Sherelle Smith, 22, told the Journal Sentinel that her brother carried a gun because he was scared and needed to protect himself, not because he was violent.

Eh, if someone shoots somebody, then turns and runs from the police while they still have the weapon, I am perfectly fine with the police shooting them in the back if that's the only way to keep them from getting away. I'd rather remove that person from society completely rather than let such a dangerous person just run off and get away.
So in a situation where the officer is non-ambulatory and does not have a radio or phone..

Rock solid killing of a total loser. The world is far better off with trash like this 6 feet under ground.
Sheriff Clarke has viewed the footage and this turdlet was shot in the chest. He set everyone in the media straight already an hour ago before they could fan the flames more. The guy is awesome.
Do you have to expend effort to be this loathesome or does it just come naturally?

They lifted it, but i think it was overturned via appeal about a year ago. Hard to keep up with some of the wisc. judges though so it might have been lifted again after that.

So you're going to riot over an ARMED thug getting taken down?  That's not the hill you want to have this fight on homey.

Sheriff Clarke is the best

Man, I really didn't want to start this thread because of the political bull#### that would be soon to follow.

That said, you're wrong. My wife works for MPS and we can move wherever we want, whenever we want. It's just a matter of us saving up and fixing up the house to sell.

Keep your eyes peeled. Once they loot and burn down everything around them, they will have to move out in every direction.
If they happen to make their way out of that cesspool and start up, shots will be returned.  Gun ownership in Wisconsin (especially rural WI) is off the charts.

I saw a video posted by some random person on one of the fb urban pages showing black people beating up random white people just because. I believe they said something to the effects of that will teach them to come down to Sherman? Not sure if the neighborhood or block is correct, but things are getting sadder in our country by the day and there are people around the world laughing at our chickens coming home to roost.
Most people that drive through Milwaukee on a regular basis (regardless of skin color) know the neighborhoods that they PRAY they don't break down in.  North and Sherman is one of those places.

Wrong. Hard to get rid of a bad teacher when the system and union protects them. I believe in MPS they call it Lemoning. One principal just moves their lemon from one school to another.

Four murdered, 9 shot in Milwaukee Fri night/Sat morning. Silence. 1 cop kills an ARMED black guy & riots break out?

In a blistering opinion Tuesday, the Wisconsin Court of Appeals reinstated Milwaukee's decades-old residency rule, which requires city employees to live within city limits.
That is from July of last year. Was that reversal shot down?Like I said, it seems Wisc. judges are constantly reversing and changing so I could be out of date on current stuff.

After some more digging it seems there was another change. In June of this year it was changed yet again to lift the restriction. So looks like court decisions in 2013,2014,2015 and now 2016 regarding this. The decision in June was the wisconsin supreme court, so it looks like it is now finally decided. Obviously this was still a factor until just this year.

I think it's useful to the extent it demonstrates a pattern of violence and racism the media is unwilling to report on.

I think out of the options honesty sounds like the best idea.
I'm talking policy changes to improve things.

If you think that is not helpful, what policy change would you think helpful? I've heard your theory on cause, what's your solution?

Do you have to expend effort to be this loathesome or does it just come naturally?
Where did he attack you first?

I might not agree with 001 but he didn't mention your name one time or attack you personally. All he did was state his opinion and he obviuously supports the police department.

Instead of speaking your mind on the issue, you attacked him. That's bush league.

"Attacked"?

My brother and a few there of my friends are MPS Teachers, and not many live in Milwaukee

I think that the under the circumstances of what was going on in your city--it's understandable how you could have been emotionally charged or angry.   People were literally destroying their own community.   However--I do think that if you are able to--you might want to "Edit" your angry post so that none of the main FBG guys reads it and slaps a suspension your way.
TLDR most people are cool

I probably should have PM'd but as I go back and read through this thread, I just wanted to reach out and say I appreciate this post. But I posted that and stand by it based on what I felt at the time. If I get a suspension, so be it...but I feel like the mods give a little leeway to locals in this kind of situation, unless it gets really bad. My post was bad, don't get me wrong but Gianmarco and I exchanged some kind words via PM and we're good to go, at least I hope. I have no ill will towards him.

I skimmed the Ferguson and Baltimore threads to find out what was going on and get an idea of what the people in the area were going through. Never thought that if a situation arised in my city that I would be this upset. But I was/am. This is like 15 minutes from my home. But this is not representative of the Milwaukee community as a whole. I took my kids to the state fair today, which also isn't far from there. That place is as white as white gets. My 1yo needed to get out and move after sitting in a stroller for 3 hours. He ran/stumbled right into an African American family. I apologized to them and the dad said "Hey no problem man, dude's gotta run, we've all been there." My son ended up holding a hand above his head for a high five and they high fived. Totally innocent but given the temperature of the city not 12 hours prior, it was pretty cool.

I specifically posted in the OP that a "suspect" was shot and that an officer was involved so there was no race or anything implied, to no avail. I've tried to stay out of the political stuff and just post what I'm seeing and hearing locally, for better or for worse. While this is still a serious situation and nowhere near what Baltimore, Ferguson etc experienced, I have to tip my cap to the MPD who have kept this situation from escalating from a 6 block area to a city wide area.

I'm rambling, sorry.

MPD has been pretty transparent about what is going on and what they are doing so far. I think they're doing a great job. @MilwaukeePolice on the twitters is a good follow if you want to be kept up to date

I tried to call my coworker for some help with a database issue an hour ago.  She lives near the burning car on tv now.  Didn't get through to her because she's at the hospital, her kid was shot tonight.  wtf

-I won't know any more about this until tomorrow morning.  I'm just sick.

CNN ..still no interest in covering..Ferguson, correspondents on site ...Baltimore correspondents on site...Milwaukee..."we can't claim racist cop...so F-it we'll just cover this one from the newsroom..... Pathetic..
