US Men's National Team (24 Viewers)

Well, 12 games and about 6 months to go, but this team's in serious danger of not making the World Cup, fellas.  Time for another beer.

Results aside, just not a lot to like about these first two matches. We’re kinda boring, and creating next to nothing.

simply not good enough.  We get nothing from open play under GGG and that’s a huge issue with the talent we have.
it's felt like two games where the other team dictated things tactically, and executed far better.

the US doesn't seem to have something tactically in place to create and control things.

and that has been the case in the Gold and Nations Cups as well.  Some late heriocs and set piece goals have papered over the issue.  And to be frank it’s 100% tactics.

Not worried at all. Zardes will be back in the next window and hopefully Snacks learned something. Gio over free kicks will be nice too. We’ll have some 7-9 point windows.

Yup. We're in major trouble.

If they don't get 3 points on Wednesday......

there will be a lot of overreaction like this post, but.....

A win at Jamaica

A win at Panama

A win at Canada

A win at Honduras

Any of these happen and we are back to even.....and we will be winning at least one of the above games.

Because they have…when you roll out a 4-3-3 time and again and know how to stop the recycle once we go up the wing…whelp that’s pretty easy to stop.

It was the same thing over and over. Cycle it in the back. Up the wing. Back to the CB. Rinse repeat until they tried a cross that was easily cleared. Nothing penetrating in the middle. No service up front. Pulisic not given a chance to create.

Something is way off.

At the beginning of the game, I saw on the TV that the US had a rank of 10 from FIFA. That’s 10 in North/South America I assume.

Zooming out a bit here - Mexico are going to run roughshod through this thing. Costa Rica is clearly nowhere near as good as they used to be, and the rest of the teams just aren’t that great. I’m not worried at all about actual qualification yet, just disappointed because I thought we were better than this.

I like the thinking.

but something has to give...players have to be healthy (or not morons), tactics have to change.

Berhalter has been so good at all the non-match stuff, I’m extra bummed he clearly isn’t that great when it comes to tactics and managing a match. I want him to be the guy, but if these results don’t change they’ll have to let him go

Pefok isn't the answer, even though he didn't get a lot of service.

Pepi needs to get some time next game.

Lletget passed backwards all game long. Acosta invisible. Pulisic didn't get enough combining touches.

The only guys that stood out to me were the Robinsons, Pulisic (when he got the ball), Aaronson, and Dest before coming off.

Konrad flashed a little during his 17 second cameo and deserves a little more time as well, I think.

Hot take:  in terms of individual talent, this team really isn't anything special.  There's 2, maybe 3, elite players (one of whom didn't play tonight).  A couple other "pretty good" young players with to-date-unfulfilled potential.  And a whole lot of filler.  Should still beat Canada, no doubt.  But CONCACAF WCQ is no cakewalk.  Everyone, from coaching staff to the players, needs to be better.

At one point in the spring there were rumblings some of the more tactically aware Euros raised an eyebrow at his tactics.  Depending on what happens in Honduras, those rumblings will bubble up again.

the quality is there.

but losing Dest, Gio and Swag...three guys with the ability to break the deep block down, and replacing them with Lletget, Acosta and Yelin...that's a big step backward.

so no other players to combine with him because he's showing back? doesn't make sense.
He’s showing back to Adams’ level so the only outlet if he can’t turn is back to the CBs or Adams (which is what happened).  Credit the Canadians (and blame GGG).

No question that there were some talented players missing today.  But depth is important, and players like the ones you've indicated don't cut the mustard.  They're more than capable replacements at CONCACAF WCQ level.  But I hope for more.

Coaching staff let them down tonight.
