Three top players in Pulisic, Gio and Weston did not get these type of minutes at the same age as Scally is getting.  He already has 630 minutes in the Bundesliga alone and another 90 in the German Cup.

But has he played on a wet and bumpy night at Stoke...Panama?

Of course not. That's why you bring arguably the most in form US player on the planet at least into camp.

It is even more concerning because the compressed schedule means no friendlies to integrate. Players in Europe can only integrate during qualifying 

 
It just seems that GGG doesn't really give much weight to "being in form".  Leaving off Scally and KDF just because they don't have the experience as others, especially when they are both getting quality minutes AND doing stuff with them in top leagues, AND both fit needs on the team, is just mind-boggling and shows that he rather play it safe with what he knows.

Luckily he finally gave in with Pepi last cycle and it paid off.  It's a shame that opportunity isn't there for these 2 to do the same thing.

To be fair the MLS guys he called are playing really well right now. I don’t mind Nips, Roldan, whoever over KDF. Moore is the true head-scratcher for me, it’s getting tougher and tougher to reconcile that one.

Whatever though, we have the players to win all of these matches. Just need to set them up properly.

I wonder how much of him calling Pepi was tied to the fact that Pepi announced he would play for the US.....I have to assume there was some pressure from the federation to not immediately piss off the young kid by snubbing him.

In retrospect it says quite a bit about Rafa Wicky that he took a US U-17 team with Pepi, Reyna, Busio, Scally & Bello and turned them into a trash heap.

No issue with those guys coming in at all.

I'd rather he called in a bigger number.  It's not an either/or at this point.  Given restrictions, illness, injury, etc., why not bring those 2 guys in that can actually help instead of leaving them home to twiddle their thumbs.  They aren't getting club time anyway as they are on break.

 
So I guess I don’t understand the rules. We had the option of calling 30 players, but for some reason only went with 27? Is that true?

that is correct.  You can call in an infinite number if you want.   The restriction comes only when you decide who to dress for each game (23 max)

I think Pepi announced because he was called. Berhalter gets the recruiting aspect of dual nats.

I'm not a huge fan of his but he's expanded the player pool quite a lot -- Dest, Musah, Pepi, Araujo (yes I know he's switching but he does have a cap), Cardoso, Otasowie, Konrad, Dike, etc. These guys all got capped super young and some may never be good enough.  

If Scally had options I actually think he would be much more likely to be called. 

 
Is there real club activity during the break? When we say “leave him with the club” we are basically just saying they don’t have to travel and there’s no risk of getting hurt is my understanding. They aren’t going up to the team’s facilities during the break are they?

 
As you can see I’m really struggling with this revelation (to me). Not calling 30 is just bat#### insane, no? What am I missing? 
 

edit: above post is poorly phrased. I know 30 isn’t the actual limit, I don’t mean to imply I’m stuck on that number specifically, I’m just saying not calling more than 27 given who was left off seems insane.

most of the US players aren't set-in-stone starters for their clubs. a guy like Scally is just breaking in, and can use the consistency at his club without the murder-travel Concacaf WCQ will produce, let alone risk of injury or exhaustion.

not saying I agree with that in his case, but a similar case could be made for most of these guys... like Konrad.

of course- Shaq isn't even playing for his club, so...

Some teams have friendlies during the break, others just have normal every day training.   They may have a day or two off but it is business as normal, just with out real games.

We will find out soon.

Note that the ruling was done specifically for EPL players.  They were expecting it to effect Championship players as well but I did not see if that was accomplished or not.

So it’s more about him missing a game or two after the window because his coach thinks he’s tired or something like that. The camps during preseason and stuff I think I’m more sympathetic to that point, but it’s the middle of the season and this is World Cup qualifying - I don’t think that should be a factor on our side at all.

Ok, makes more sense then, but I’m still on the Allen Iverson side of that argument. If we think we need them I don’t care about practice.

Not that he would go with them, but Scally does have either a Scottish or Irish passport which makes calling him up even more head-scratching

Allen Iverson was a superstar though... he was starting whether he was practicing or not.

the US players are fighting for their spots every day in practice. If they're not there due to international break and some other guy does well in their absence, there's a genuine risk they lose their spot.

 
and again- I still want the US players called into camp for WCQ. 

if this was camp cupcake with nothing on the line but some friendlies... fuggedowdit.

 
The simple fact that is that Scaly is better than Moore (based on all evidence we've seen in the past year) AND is playing every week in one of the top leagues in the world. He's more versatile, has higher upside and brings a skillset that is lacking (relatively speaking) in the other players at his position.  (his 1 v 1 defending)

The odds of his club benching him because another player (who isn't good enough to be called into a national team) trains better in his absence seem VERY low.

No excuse for not calling him in.  At the pace he's progressing, its not unreasonable to think he could be the primary backup at both fullback spots in Qatar. (not 100%, but certainly not impossible given what's in front of him)  Dude should be in camp, at the very least...to get his feet wet and start learning the system.

You sure on this? His transfer from NYCFC was delayed specifically because he lacked an EU passport. Ireland is EU. Today Scotland wouldn't count but that was 2019 which was pre-Brexit. Though I really have no idea how that was handled during the negotiations. 

ETA: Northern Ireland would be same spot as Scotland and maybe that's what you meant

Tbf, Shaq played pretty well over the summer and got a true taste of concacaf, albeit at home.

But at this point, it seems pretty obvious Scally>>>Shaq. Has the feel of GGG and Yueill.

I mean....yeah....he got his chance, played pretty well. But I certainly didn't see anything that showed he will be a part of the long term plans. He's a C+ MAYBE B- caliber player for us.

I realize we're not arguing here.....but I just can't get over this selection. Dude is on the bench in the Spanish 2nd division.  is Reggie Cannon playing right now? (I honestly dont know). He'd certainly be a better option.

 
It warms my heart to see GGG getting roasted on Twitter over not calling Scally.

I hope we move on sooner than later...nepotism boy had his chance.

I should know the answer to this question but I am confused.  When I look up Boavista's stats, he has not played a single minute all season.  And this is after playing almost every possible minute last season.

If he is hurt, I may have missed it.  It is strange because they list players who have played 0 minutes, but Cannon is not listed at all.  He is still on their wiki page though.

I assume something bad happened this summer as he was all set to leave and something got really screwed up and he ended up firing his agent.

I caught only one game and he looked kinda raw with his touches and decision making..understandable from an 18yo. But he's obviously doing better than that or he wouldn't be starting every week.

Carleton. Whoa. Is he still playing anywhere?

Sucks about Owen. So disappointing from a US fan standpoint. I genuinely wonder if he gets what's going on, or is blaming something other than himself.

Sure and like I said, I would like to see him in camp but I’m not going to call for GGG’s head because he doesn’t bring in a mostly unproven 18 year old.  I think that’s stupid.

Carleton is on a minnow club in Costa Rica.  I don’t think he is getting any time.

Maybe Owen will lend his feet to Yedlin and his body to Pulisic since he appears to be wasting them.
