US Men's National Team (5 Viewers)

What Floppo said. It's a funny ol' game and the US dominated play. Don't get the gnashing of teeth over a fluky loss. The sky is not falling.

Some good news about CCV - Spurs played a couple of closed door friendlies today, senior team and Academy team. CCV playd 45 minutes for the senior team.

I still have not heard anything about his plans for the season - he would be at best 6th on the depth chart if he stays at Spurs, and would spend most of the season with the U21s v. Going out on loan somewhere. But it looks like he is continuing to progress. Seems certain that the U.S. would call him in for the Olympic qualifying, and maybe even a senior team call in to a European game sometime next spring.
More good news for CCV - it looks like he will travel with the squad to Denver for the MLS all-star game.

Not sure that he will get in the game, with 2 sets of CB ahead of him, but it looks like he has also played cm/dm recently in at least one closed-door friendly, so could get in the game in that role.

The Gold Cup isn't some throwaway. It's the 2nd biggest thing the US can win and it's annoying that Mexico will probably win their 7th (to our 5th) now.
In terms of bigger I would rate the copa next year, the confed cup (both obviously not a guaranteed entry very often) and both years of World Cup qualifying as all more important and bigger than the Gold Cup. Beating Jamaica at home doesn't really prove anything. Just like losing to them in a one-off in a tournament not related to WC qualifying isn't the end of the world.
But this IS related to the world cup. Winner goes to confed cup in wc host Russia to play against other confed winners. A chance to get acclimated to the WC host counrry ahead of time while playing against the worlds best.

And Im less concerned, only because of the playin game. But vs mex at rosebowl is a disaster.

Now Wahl just re-tweeted something about October 9 at the Rose Bowl.

I'll be in LA that week.
Late last night he tweeted the date is official.
Why would we not schedule this for Columbus? Seems were always playing at azteca???
This is not a US controlled game. It is a Concacaf game. They don't care about a US home field advantage, they just want to make the most money they can.

Oh.

So, realistically, it'll be an 80-20 split for Mexico?

Do they give each confederation 50/50 of the tickets? So, maybe AO can request a larger allotment of tix?

I think if the US had played well in the group stage most would just have written this off as a quirk. But they did not play well in any of the group stage games imo, even if the results were favorable.

I thought they played their best game of the tournament last night.

Let's say I wanted to go to that game in October with my lovely wife who likes US soccer but is less interested in being pelted with a bottle of piss. Is it that bad? Totally avoid?

At the Rose Bowl? 80-20 seems about right if Mexico makes it.

I don't know how or how many they distribute tickets to each confed but I am pretty sure the vast vast majority are just open for sale to anyone.

Over the years I have been to a couple of games where the US is severely undermanned in the stadium. It is not fun, and some times not safe. I would not recommend.

Damn.

I just told her about the potential of going (she doesn't know about the surrounding stuff) and she said oooh that sounds fun, let's do it.

Do you want to sit with the Outlaws or just sit with out any colors in another part of the stadium?

If you sit with the Outlaws you will likely get hit with something.

If you have seen the Outlaws video from their trip to Azteca, you can see how dangerous and bloody it can be.

So for the Rose Bowl game... Could AO buy like 1000 Blue windbreakers and have ICE put in big letters on the back and then station 1000 people in the jackets around the Rose Bowl starting like two hours before the game?

Would that be wrong? Am I a bad person for even thinking of this?

She has a 2014 World Cup Jersey with "I BELIEVE" as the name on the back. Suppose we should leave that one at home.

It's not that bad. Also, I'd actually recommend sitting with AO. at least you now you'll be surrounded by a few thousand of the same fans. Who knows who you'll sit by otherwise. Just know that by "sit" AO is all standing and singing for 90mins. I went to the Phoenix Mexico game and it was a pretty friendly crowd for the most part. We had to kick a Mexican guy out of the AO section (somma##### is still in most of the pictures from that game though). Out in the bathrooms and beer lines everyone was friendly enough. Might have been another case of it being the AO section bathrooms and beer lines. Their were a couple hostile pockets of Mexican tailgates now that I remember....So much security though that nothing really escalated.

Speaking of Phoenix, that is a much better venue than the stupid ####### Rose Bowl.

Ok so how do I buy AO tickets? Be a member? Or just sit around their section.

We are not shiit talkers by trade so I can't imagine it being that bad.

The whole tourney has been rigged to set up a USA v Mexico playoff. This is CONCACAF we are talking about. Crooked as Hell.

Actually not sure if you need to be a member, but you have to buy through them. There is a discount price on the site for members, so I would think that means non-members can buy. Don't remember if the ticket part is behind the password part of the site though... Presale codes go to members. That was the only way to get Columbus tickets.

Membership is pretty cheap. $25 for the year. Comes with a shirt and bandana.

What a horrible night of games from The US getting beat to the US Ref helping Mexico. BS Red, BS PKx2. 7 yellows and a red for Panama, 4 yellows for Mexico? Several cards for Panama were for dissent or looking at the ref wrong or just because. Mexico gets a talking to on tackles from behind.

Obviously the federation wants US Mexico in a playoff post tourney. Panama got robbed and I expect Jamaica gets robbed in the final too.

As for the US, I was not impressed with any of their play. Too slow on the ball, too much dribbling, half the time they didnt seem to know what they were going to do with the ball until they got it and then looked

Wondo Johannson needs to bury that header off the rebound. We do not have a MF that can impose his will on a game (No Bradly cant), no forward that can bail out a game with an improbably goal. We lack vision and our 1-2 touch is the pace of most EPL teams 4-5 touch. Our first touch stunk all night.

I also love the twitter hate for Tim Howard announcing he is ready to come back. They blame him for rattling Guzan and causing his bad game. Sad really. Guzan isnt a #1. No hops, poor positioning and to get that handball call? It was pretty bad. Most keepers get close and although you never see it called, that was pretty bad.

And yes I am overly critical here but I just saw very little positive in this tourney and this game. And admittedly I seem to watch a different game then most of you! :boxing:

FYI, that 2015 sports almanac my cousin Biff gave me has the results for the final:

Mexico 3 - 2 Jamaica

50' Giles Barnes

72' Garath McCleary

91+' Andres Guardado (PK)

93+' Andres Guardado (PK)

106+' Andres Guardado (PK)

I'm pretty curious to see the line for the final - haven't seen it posted yet on the few sites I checked. I disagree that Jamaica's win over the US was a fluke. For me it was well-earned, while Mexico is quite lucky to be playing in the final.

Mexico should destroy that Jam team from last night
I am not sure whether this is a good or a bad thing but I believe everyone would be in agreement that the traditional strong countries in Concacaf looked bad across the board.

Honduras looked toothless going out in the group stage

The US did not look good for most of the tournament

Costa Rica seems to have come back to earth quickly

And Mexico has struggled through out really only advancing by good fortune, not by good play.

While this is a positive thing for the US that we are not dropping behind the other strong teams, I bet this could be an indication of a very interesting qualification cycle.

The draw for World Cup Qualifying in on Saturday at 10:55am.

It will be shown live on FS1 and Telemundo.

The US will learn its possible opponents for the 4th round of Concacaf qualifying as both the 3rd and 4th round draws happen on the same day.

Makes you wonder if the Mexican team knew they were going to be gifted a finals spot and didnt care to try. (sarcasm, sorta)

From ESPN, the top 10 losses in US history. I have seen every one. :(

1. 1998 World Cup group stage: Iran 2, USA 1

In a game packed with political tension, the loss to Iran in France is mostly remembered as a simple soccer failure. Off the back of its knockout-round appearance at the ultrasuccessful 1994 World Cup, the U.S. believed it was ready to take the next step. Instead, it followed up a not-unexpected loss to Germany in the first game of the group stage with this defeat in Lyon. The poor relations between the two nations played a role in the buildup, but once the game started, the USMNT couldn't impose itself on its opponent.

2. 2015 Gold Cup semifinal: Jamaica 2, USA 1

Wednesday's match was the first time the U.S. had lost to a Caribbean nation on American soil since 1969. It was first time the U.S. was eliminated from the Gold Cup by a CONCACAF team other than Mexico. And it was the first time the U.S. failed to advance to the final since 2003. It remains to be seen whether the loss means some sort of reckoning is coming for coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

3. 2011 Gold Cup final: Mexico 4, USA 2

Otherwise known as the Bob Bradley farewell game. In his final match as USMNT coach (he would be fired a month later), Bradley attempted to mold his team into something more expansive and attack-minded. After going up 2-0 through goals by Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan, the U.S. succumbed to Mexico's superior offensive talent at the Rose Bowl. The pro-Mexico crowd delighted in the victory for El Tri, a win that embarrassed the Americans and forced U.S. Soccer into a coaching change.

4. 2006 World Cup group stage: Czech Republic 3, USA 0

So much of the disappointment that came from the U.S.' performance at the 2006 World Cup can be laid at the feet of an inflated FIFA ranking (the Americans were No. 4 in the world two months before the tournament) that unfairly raised expectations. Instead of going deep in the draw, the U.S. fell flat against the Czechs in its group-stage opener, a loss that set the tone for the rest of its tournament.

5. 2010 World Cup round of 16: Ghana 2, USA 1

With a chance to repeat its best showing at a World Cup on the line, the U.S. fell in extra time to Ghana on a goal by Asamoah Gyan. Ricardo Clark was stripped of the ball in midfield just five minutes into the game, allowing Kevin-Prince Boateng to rocket a shot by a helpless Tim Howard and put the Ghanaians up 1-0. A second-half penalty converted by Landon Donovan got the Americans back on level terms, but Gyan sealed their fate.

6. 2006 World Cup group stage: Ghana 2, USA 1

The first time Ghana broke American hearts came in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup. Despite failing to score on its own through two games (a shutout loss to the Czechs and a 1-1 draw with Italy that featured an Italian own goal), the U.S. held its fate in its hands against Ghana in the final Group E match. Win it, and the U.S. would advance to the knockout rounds for the second consecutive tournament. Instead, Claudio Reyna suffered insult and injury on a turnover that led to an early Ghana goal, and Oguchi Onyewu was whistled for a dubious penalty that led to the winning goal on a penalty kick.

7. 2011 Gold Cup group stage: Panama 2, USA 1

The 2-1 defeat to Panama in Tampa is notable for being the Americans' first group-stage loss in a Gold Cup match, their first loss to Panama and a game that first set the stage for Bob Bradley's ousting as coach. Two first-half goals for Panama -- one of them officially an own goal by Clarence Goodson, and the other a penalty earned when Blas Perez used his guile to victimize Tim Ream -- were all the Central American side needed to see the game out.

8. 2009 Confederations Cup final: Brazil 3, USA 2

With a chance to win its first FIFA senior trophy, the U.S. took a 2-0 lead on mighty Brazil before seeing its lead melt under a second-half barrage by the Selecao. What had been a very strange, up-and-down tournament for the U.S. -- it beat Spain 2-0 in the semifinals -- looked like it would deliver one of the defining moments in American soccer history. Instead, Brazil prevailed 3-2, and Clint Dempsey was brought to tears during the postgame ceremonies.

9. 2009 Gold Cup final: Mexico 5, USA 0

2009 was an off year for the Gold Cup, but this loss still stands out for the sheer magnitude of the score line. Bob Bradley took a team made up of the very green and very fringe to a tournament that didn't determine the Confederations Cup representative for CONCACAF, and therefore mattered less. Mexico did the same, but when the two giants of the region met each other in front of a sellout crowd at Giants Stadium, the Mexicans displayed all of the attacking talent. Five different Mexico players scored as Giants Stadium rocked with the noise made by 79,000 green-clad El Tri fans.

10. 2002 World Cup quarterfinals: Germany 1, USA 0

The U.S.' loss to Germany in South Korea sneaks into this list but could very well rank much higher depending on the exact definition of "worst." Unlike some others, this loss was due not to a poor American performance but rather a cruel twist of fate. After surprising the world by upsetting Portugal in the group stage and then downing bitter rival Mexico in the round of 16, the U.S. played Germany toe-to-toe over the course of 90 minutes, but it found itself behind thanks to a Michael Ballack goal just before halftime.

The moment that will remain burned in American minds, however, came when Torsten Frings handled the ball on the line in the 49th minute, robbing the U.S. of the equalizer. No whistle came from referee Hugh Dallas, denying the Americans the justice they seemed to deserve.

WTH? Losing to Ghana, Ghana and Germany by a goal in the WC aren't bad losses. Neither is losing to Brazil in the Confed Cup (even after going up 2-0). 5-0 to Mexico should be #1 IMO.

It is all based on your definition of bad I guess.

The Germany loss for me was by far the worst. I will remember that loss well beyond the Jamaica loss last night or Mexico 5-0 (which I had already forgotten about so unimportant it was).

I went to the U.S./Mexico game in San Antonio and sat with the Outlaws. Stadium had 65k in attendance and it was at least 75% Mexico fans. Environment was awesome and we never felt threatened. Plus, dos a cero.
