Louisville City defender Josh Wynder has completed a transfer to Benfica, a source in Portugal tells
Pro Soccer Wire.
The highly rated 17-year-old will make the move to Europe this summer. All medicals have been conducted and Wynder’s contract has been signed with the Portuguese club.
The transfer is worth $1.5 million plus potential add-ons, making it the largest in USL history. The previous record was Kobi Henry’s
move to Reims from Orange County SC for a reported $700,000.
ok, so lets talk more about this.
On the one hand, a USL team developing talent and getting paid real money for ($1.5m is massive for a USL club) is really really good. Even with MLS continuing to expand, we know it can't cover any where near enough of the country in their academies so if the USL can start producing talent it could go a long way to cover up holes in the map.
On the other hand, I feel like this transfer highlights a huge problem in our soccer system. That player should not have been transferred to a team where American's have gone to die traditionally. A player of that skill level should be purchased for the exact same money by an MLS team. The MLS team should then continue to develop the player and hopefully sell him for a $5-6m profit when he is 19 or 20.
It is my guess that because MLS is a closed league, they continue to look at the USL as "competition" and probably have the thought process of we can't give money to our competition.
But I also have some hope that in the next 10 or so years this may sort itself out. MLS was steadfast against ever entering the transfer market to sell players in their first 15-18 years of existence, thinking that it some how made them look weak to sell. But we now can see that the entire league has embraced the global market. As such it is my hope that since they took some time but eventually grew to adopt the global market, that they will do the same with the domestic market.
Thoughts?
