Also, I really want to know what made it on to Gregg's apology mixtape.

It had to be done (not me) — The 1992 Incident
While the inclusion of Can I Kick It amuses me, I feel that doing a selection of in-jokey titles is less funny than putting together a guess of what a contrite college sophomore in 1992 would actually put on a cassette to his estranged girlfriend.

I probably should have actually looked at the songs before giving this guy credit. Didn't realize that was his angle.

No ccv or richards. As far as I can tell, both are healthy.

Makes no sense to me to include miles over them. I know he's back plating but seems like he hasn't been amazing or anything. This just seems like Long all over again.
I might be missing something, but Miles was arguably our MVP before his injury. I don't see the Long comparison at all.

I think the comparison comes more from that Long was really good before his major injury and then after he was not the same player at all. I think there is some fear that Miles might be the same and people want to see him excel at club level again (something Long was never able to do after the injury).

Miles is specifically of a concern since so much of his game was predicated on his elite athletic ability. If he lost a step or not as good in air, his ability on the national team level (not these upcoming games of course, I mean against top 25 type teams) might come into question.

This.

I liked miles very much pre injury. Just want to see a few months of good performance before I call him in.

I have to assume that ccv and richards have minor knocks of some kind.

Louisville City defender Josh Wynder has completed a transfer to Benfica, a source in Portugal tells Pro Soccer Wire.

The highly rated 17-year-old will make the move to Europe this summer. All medicals have been conducted and Wynder’s contract has been signed with the Portuguese club.

The transfer is worth $1.5 million plus potential add-ons, making it the largest in USL history. The previous record was Kobi Henry’s move to Reims from Orange County SC for a reported $700,000.

Pulisic weighs in on Reyna-Berhalter. Holds his tongue but seems a somewhat thinly veiled shot -
"Everything that happened with Gregg first of all has been handled in an extremely childish manner. I think we've seen what's been going on. I think it's childish, it's youth soccer, people complaining about playing time. I don't want to go too far into that, but I think Gregg has been extremely unfortunate to get into the position he is in now."

Kind of surprised to hear CP is on the GB bandwagon -- would have guessed maybe they didn't mesh very well.

If the players want him back, he should be back.

Doesn’t have to be on the bandwagon or want GB back to recognize that the Reynas were objectively terrible and GB wasn’t. It’s pretty easy to feel that the reason GB isn’t the coach right now isn’t fair, but also feel there’s better options for purely football reasons.

Long was a locked in starter coming out of the previous cycle. No mvp, but surefire starting 11.

Yeah, what McB said.

I think GB as coach or not can be read as not even factoring to CPs comments.

Yeah, he could think it's all pretty unfair without wanting him back.

But I think if you wanted him gone you might keep your mouth shut about how unfair it was.

The full interview comes out tomorrow. And I guess its probably best to ignore and hope this thing passes, but I think this passage indicates maybe he does want Berhalter back:

Pulisic said the team should not waste time in appointing a permanent coach, adding he felt the side was heading in the right direction under Berhalter.

"Do I feel like we should just wait and wait? I don't think it's necessary, because we are not in a phase like we were after not qualifying [for the 2018 World Cup] where we needed a complete rebuild," Pulisic said.

"We don't need a bunch of new guys coming in. We have a strong core in my opinion -- people have seen that and we need to carry on with that. It's a tough one for me because we should continue that as soon as we can and build off this World Cup, which I think had a lot of positives in it. We want to get going with that as soon as we can."

I am 100% in agreement with Pulisic that we should not be waiting so long for a head coach. This is the second cycle in a row that we have to deal with a caretaker because they are taking so long to find someone to hire.

I also think it's telling in that GGG never treated Pulisic with kid gloves so it's not like Pulisic only wants him because GGG favors him.

It is easily forgotten by the haters but GGG made the incredibly gutsy call to bench his best player during some critical moments in qualifying and to Pulisic's credit, he did not sulk, he just produced off the bench and forced his way back into the starting lineup.

How confident are we that he's better than the other guys scoring goals in marginal leagues? I know nothing about him -- is he a slam dunk for the US?

I'm quite sure I've posted no less than 10 videos/highlights/clips of him over the last couple years.

He's the striker we've been waiting for.

Ligue 1 is not a marginal league imo. But no matter where anyone scores, it is hard to predict how he will do at the international level because of the variables involved.

All we know is that he is scoring more goals at a higher level than any other number 9 we have.

This is also when Musah said he was going to make his decision, right?
Yeah, was hoping to hear soon from him.

On that same note, I haven't seen anything recently, but we still have an outside chance at Folarin Balogun. That would be HUGE if he somehow decides to go with the USMNT. It would require a one-time switch so we won't see him called up, but if he's got no shot with England (which is almost certainly the case), I could see it happening.

"So you're saying there's a chance?"

:oldunsure:

I didn't realize Balogun already played with the US U18's back in 2018 almost 3 years ago and has scored twice for us. He scored the lone goal against Czech Republic, and he scored against Bulgaria.

He had just turned 17 at the time.

Balogun has been responding to every instagram post Yunus makes about the US. It may be they are just friends and he is happy for him but always worth hoping for more..
Just found this when they played together at Arsenal. Balogun scored the first 4 goals ( :lmao: ) and then Musah substituted in later and scored the 7th and involved in 2 others.

I didn't realize they had that connection and that could be huge in convincing him to switch.

Balogun to USMNT?

Who knows, but I like it!

Hearing that it's very likely Folarin Balogun will file a switch to represent the United States. Path to the first team is much clearer compared to with England. Though still a prospect, FB is a player with considerable upside/ability
Look what he did against Spurs

Balogun article

Musah played with England Us too.
Right, that's irrelevant. He needs to file a one time switch. This was reported a couple weeks ago. Holding out hope.

This is what we want for us.

For what little it is worth, the twitter stalkers say Balogun has spent a good part of the WC posting pro US team stuff on his social media.
Man, I haven't even been following lately since he made his move to Ligue 1. For Stade Reims, he's their leading goal scorer and he already has 8 goals and 2 assists in 15 appearances, including scores in 5 of his last 6 games.

Geez.
Here you go.... These are just some....

Kind of interesting seeing him answer the question on video, particularly because the question he was asked didn't touch on the Reyna situation at all - just asked about the timing of hiring a new coach.

Upon further review, I think I agree with you!

Average expected goals against (i.e. an estimate of defensive quality, where lower is better) across every team in each league, when playing an average team at a neutral site:
  • EPL - 0.75 (whoa)
  • La Liga - 0.80
  • Bundesliga - 0.94
  • Serie A - 0.98
  • Ligue1 - 0.99
  • Championship - 1.26
  • Netherlands - 1.34
  • Turkey - 1.51
  • MLS - 1.54

It's a bit weird too because CP has taken some grief when Mark Pulisic has made a comment or two (obviously not on Claudio and Danielle's level) when Chelsea have kept Christian on the bench or played him at RWB or whatever.

ok, so lets talk more about this.

On the one hand, a USL team developing talent and getting paid real money for ($1.5m is massive for a USL club) is really really good. Even with MLS continuing to expand, we know it can't cover any where near enough of the country in their academies so if the USL can start producing talent it could go a long way to cover up holes in the map.

On the other hand, I feel like this transfer highlights a huge problem in our soccer system. That player should not have been transferred to a team where American's have gone to die traditionally. A player of that skill level should be purchased for the exact same money by an MLS team. The MLS team should then continue to develop the player and hopefully sell him for a $5-6m profit when he is 19 or 20.

It is my guess that because MLS is a closed league, they continue to look at the USL as "competition" and probably have the thought process of we can't give money to our competition.

But I also have some hope that in the next 10 or so years this may sort itself out. MLS was steadfast against ever entering the transfer market to sell players in their first 15-18 years of existence, thinking that it some how made them look weak to sell. But we now can see that the entire league has embraced the global market. As such it is my hope that since they took some time but eventually grew to adopt the global market, that they will do the same with the domestic market.

Thoughts?

I think your point is valid but this might be a bad example to use. Apparently several MLS clubs had reached out to Lou CIty about Wynder but Wynder was not interested. So that just happens.

Diego Luna is an example but it is surprisingly rare. And Luna even began at an MLS academy. I think it has to do with the relative infantile stage of USL player development. Most of the best players in USL at this point are there after leaving MLS academies and a fair number do so in order to jump to Europe at the first chance. In will be interesting to see if/when this changes.

* I agree that the Sporting Director would in a perfect world be responsible for hiring the coach

* However, hiring a SD is significantly harder than hiring a coach. A SD that will be hired is almost certainly one that is already well employed where as it is the exact opposite for a coach. It is a million times easier to hire people out of work than trying to convince a SD to leave his already solid position.

* One way around the SD issue is to roll the dice and hire some one who does not have the proper experience but is looking to take his career to the next level. This is obviously fairly risky.

I watched Futbol America for the Pulisic interview. There's a follow-up question where Christian is asked, "It sounds like you're saying that you want Gregg back, is it fair to say that's where you're at?" And Christian says, "Yeah, that's where I'm at, and I think what we've accomplished together speaks for itself."

So, there's really no other interpretation. Pulisic is Team GGG.

Really seemed like that, otherwise why go there? Think I'll go scroll through USMNT Twitter to see the carnage. [ETA: disappointing -- may need to give it a day or two.]

Did the interview seem like he was calling Gio out some too? When I saw the clip someone posted earlier it felt like it hit much closer to Gio than I expected (i.e. it wasn't obviously *just* directed at the parents).

I think it's hard to argue that Gio is completely spared when CP says that whining about playing time is "youth soccer" stuff. Yeah, he's mostly talking about Gio's parents, but it has to hit on Gio a bit too. That doesn't bother me much. I've never been a professional athlete, but I would have understood that I'd need to eat a little **** with the team after something like this when I played travel soccer and high school football. It's not as if Gio will be able to recruit a bunch of Team Gio teammates if CP's comments offend him. I imagine most will follow CP's (and Ream's as Tyler isn't in this camp) lead. They all know he's talented. He just has to play his part by keeping his head down, working hard, and being as good as he is.

We never knew who the players were that pulled Gio aside and told him to smarten up. It was rumored to be Zimm and Yedlin but hearing Pulisic talk today, with some edge to his voice makes me think he was part of the group that talked to Gio in Qatar.
