US Men's National Team (15 Viewers)

What are the expectations against Brazil? If people were unhappy with Berhalter before Colombia, I can't imagine there will be many new fans after Brazil.

I have a feeling this is going to be a tough summer to be a USMNT supporter.

Is there a goal for Copa? Is the expectation to get out of the group, or win a knock-out game? If so, how?

If US fails to get out of the group, it'll be a huge failure. We have Uruguay, Bolivia, and Panama. We are(or at least should be) miles better than Bolivia and Panama. We are(or at least should be) pretty close to Uruguay. If we play up to standard, we should easily finish 2nd and have a good shot at top of the group, either of which gets us to the knock outs.

Unfortunately, we likely face either Brazil or Colombia in the knockouts, so that seems like our exit point.

I think making the knockouts would be expected, and a win in the knock outs would be considered a pretty great success.

1. We are likely going to get smoked by Uruguay. A high tempo press vs our defense is going to be terrible unless we change our style of play

2. I think we match up better with Brazil than either Colombia or Uruguay. Brazil won't press and will want possession and force us to counterattack. They may still beat us up but I think it's a better matchup because they will force us to play to our strengths no matter how much we don't want to do so

3. Berhalter after being fired laid the marker down that the US expectation for 2026 should be the semifinals. Given that, I can't see how less than semifinals in 2024 Copa is acceptable. I agree where we are now, realistically I expect we advance easily and get crushed in the knockouts. But that's grading on a curve. I don't think it's a "great success" to make the semis. We did that with a dead roster under Klinsmann. We're at home. We should expect to get at least one decent win in this 6-year tenure.

Just looked at the odds - Uruguay are comfortably 3rd favorites after Argentina and Brazil.

Bolivia and Panama are dead last.

So, failure to get out of the group stage should result in big changes - I would think.

Lose in the knockout - and its par for the course, and changes unlikely.

Feels like for GGG's entire tenure he has done just enough to stay employed.

Of course we also have the problem of who could we even attract should GGG get fired after a Copa failure?

Less than 2 years until the Cup, no qualification to build the team, and probably only a medium sized contract offer does not make for an enticing package for a big name.

I have seen names like Nancy and Low mentioned as possibilities.

Maybe US Soccer could convince an Apple-level sponsor to go after Klopp...

I've defended Berhalter up until now -- partly just because I think he's been treated so unfairly -- but if we lay an egg against Brazil and fail to get out of the group stage in the Copa I think you have to pull the trigger.

The game this past weekend might be the worst US game I've ever seen. It's certainly up there. They have to play consistently well and get results in the next 5-6 games for him to survive IMO.

Yeah, the small salary is an issue. Klopp is coming off at £15M salary. Hard to see him(or any coach of that stature) to accept the approximately $2M we could afford.

What about thinking outside the box and looking at someone like Jill Ellis? Could she make the same impact in the men's game?

Actually, my idea of getting a sponsor to help with the coach is a non starter. I forgot that US Soccer wants the men's and women's coach to be somewhat close in salary.

#3. I watched a fair amount of Milan this year and Pulisic was excellent and I hoped for this summer to be a bit of a break out for him(as a recognized top player worldwide). I thought Colombia neutralized him pretty effectively last night. I think he(and this team) needs another star to really step up and be a constant threat opposite of him(like Rafa Leao does in Milan) if he's going to be the best version of himself. I don't know who that is for us.... Gio?
When CP gets to the US team, he constantly looks like he is trying to do it all. Live up to the Captain American and carry this team. I've felt that if he actually played within the team he could elevate the rest and it would be better for him and everyone else. Pass and move instead of trying to dribble everyone.

I didn't watch much of Milan, do you feel he plays more as part of the team there?
Yes.... Not really? It's hard to say. I didn't feel like Milan had a defined attacking system in place to be honest. It felt very much like it was "get the ball to your playmakers and go fast". The thing is... CP is really good at that. Especially when he has talented players around him that are in sync with him. Some of his give and go play with Giroud, RLC, etc. this year was incredible.

The thing that really made the difference is that defenses couldn't "key" on him. If you doubled CP, he quickly switched the ball to the middle, where it usually went very quickly to the left and to Leao or Theo Hernandez and immediately the defense was on their heels. Just that threat kept Christian in mostly 1 on 1 defensive situations and opened up a lot of give and go play which he took full advantage of.

I think him as an iso guy only works if there's the threat of a quick switch to another guy or two that can beat you just as easily. That keeps the defense honest and it's why I was saying we need another star to step up and be that constant threat. Weah's speed is dangerous. He's capable to beating his guy at times in iso situations, but his final cross/pass/shot is miles behind Pulisic's, so he doesn't scare defenses the same way. Gio was maybe supposed to be that guy, but his career has been temporarily(hopefully) derailed and he hasn't taken that leap yet, although he feels like the guy with that ability. Balogun gets lost in the middle just as much as our other #9s, making me think it's the system letting them down, but he's clearly not to the level yet of being a guy that forces the play whether it's set up for him or not. Not sure I see any other candidates for this potential need ATM.

That guy was Dest before he got injured, imo. I still don't understand why he is a RB and Weah a winger instead of flipping them.

That's great- he's a kid that has seemed on the cusp for a couple years now... Hoping this move pushes him over the edge.

He was absolute **** for Leeds... And england is all these people know, so yeah- short leash expected.

Rooting for more terrible outings in the Copa so GGG in ousted and we can get a real coach for the WC.

Fingers crossed.
I'm not a GGG apologist; in fact I think everyone's view that he's lacking on the international stage and too rigid with tactics is spot on. That said, I believe most of the current mainstays are on record as wanting him as their coach. Therefore, I don't think changing coaches for this group will help. If the coach they want to play for can't get them to elevate their level of play, I don't know how much another coach would be able to.

On the other hand, if the players turn on him, then we can talk new coach. Until then, all we can do is watch this group not only sleep in but also **** the bed they themselves made.

Also, my takeaway from the Colombia match is that for as much as I can't stand the 'style' of South American teams (my biggest objection is the flopping bullies), their overall frenetic, high-energy play is something we overlook in our quest to be like England/Germany/Europe, and should probably look into.

The nightmare scenario is we get drilled by Uruguay but scrape enough points in the other two games to squeak into the knockouts, then get crushed by Brazil. This result shouldn't really be enough to save Berhalter imo but based on history might be enough for USSF.

Agreed although that 2016 Centenario run was based on extreme good fortune. We lost to Colombia 2-0 but still won our group on goal differential when Colombia somehow lost to Costa Rica in the final group game. That allowed us to draw a weak Ecuador who had finished second in their group to Peru (after Brazil completely imploded.) Since the tournament only has 16 teams, that one win over Ecuador was enough to get us in the semifinal where we were properly trounced. We've got no such luck this time. Reaching the semis will mean we've had at least one huge win. If we beat either Uruguay, Brazil or Colombia in this tournament that game will immediately eclipse the scoreless draw against England as Berhalter's signature result.

The other reality - maybe we can't afford to pay for a better coach.

This is kind of where I'm at...it's not like higher level replacements are beating down our doors.

And to your last point, I completely agree. Having coached every level from little kids park ball to club to hogh school for 28 years, American players do not want to play Latin heavy teams. It's not like I say "thos next game is going to be tough. They will blah blah blah", the kids just know and are mostly defeated before the game even starts. I started having my boys teams watch and try to play high pressure like the Mexico teams 10 years ago.

The level I coach and the senior nationals aren't really comparable or shouldn't be now we have so many playing overseas but I think it shows that we are still catching up to the rest of the world. We don't know what style we want to play - we just know playing Latin high press annoys us.

I also realized that the other teams making up the majority of the stadium crowd ties into their relative lack of visibility in the US compared to the USMNT, making even a friendly more must-see.

The thing is that most national team coaches only go two cycles anyway, so GGG staying for 2030 is a longshot anyway. That's why fretting about GGG is a fool's errand, IMO. I agree with your last statement, and I'd say that GGG is good at the former and gawdawful at the latter.

The ship on not letting the players choose the coach set sail when GGG was hired back after the last WC. Pulisic informally led the charge to bring him back, so this generation of players have basically gone all-in with GGG for better and worse. TBH, after what Hugo Perez did with El Salvador, he belongs in the conversation and would be the frontrunner to replace GGG; he has ties to the USMNT and has proven that he can elevate his team on the international stage.

And as crazy as it sounds, I wouldn't mind seeing Tim Ream in the mix to coach in 2030, regardless of results.

Pioli is available.

Basically GGG with better players- get the ball wide to his playmakers and hope to good something happens.
Does Pioli's style fit the current squad's mentality? How would he even integrate young talent into the system?
Lol... I was just comparing the- not sure how we'll score, but hope to hell CP or Leao make something happen and Gieoud gets a foot on something if not, coaching style.

I don't like painting entire regions with a broad brush, it's just that the more I watch, the more I start to notice general differences. Germany and England seemed more technical than France and Italy, who respectively seemed more free-flowing and physical. Then there was Mexico, who just seem to have attackers coming from every direction and their classic pattern of scoring was to get the defense to commit to one side and with a quick reverse, there were 2-3 guys running free with the keeper out of position. I know the reality is different, but that's what I thought I was seeing. Now that I'm able to see Copa Liberatores matches, and seeing Argentina show their *** as a strategy in the last WC, I'm seeing similarities coming from South America. I hope future generations of players are taught to play with a higher energy level, though the rest will be tougher, because as a first-world country, we get punished worse.

The U19's beat Uruguay today 1-0. This after beating Argentina 1-0. Nice results down in South America for the U20 WC hopefuls.
Pretty impressive showing given the 2nd rate roster we sent. No idea if Uruguay or Argentina's roster was first choice but it really doesn't matter to me. The fact that without Kochen, Wynder, Banks, and RBW - four of the likely 5 starters on our backline - we held two shutouts suggests we may have some solid depth.

Murray (Freiburg) and Akinmboni (DCU) were the center back pair and my understanding is they are more prospects than finished products. Maybe it's coming together for them. Murray has started to generate some praise in Germany but he's still playing at the youth level. Potential he's had a real breaththrough.

What a dreadful half for the US. They are absolutely toothless. Not a single shot in the entire half (even off goal if memory serves). They only had a single attempt that was blocked.

Booth was virtually invisible and the two CB's look they just met (which I think they did).

If any of these players were marginal, they certainly did not help their case to make the final squad.

I can't recall a US player beating any one on the dribble either.

I expect a decent amount of changes at half.

US is lucky to only be down 1. It should probably be 2-0 or even 3-0 at half.

I think many many of them are. It's only an 18 man roster and the roster for this camp is 25 players and we know at least 2 more overage players will be added. So it should be 9 of these guys are getting cut
