US Men's National Team (15 Viewers)

“If you’re an American coaching a U.S. team, you know the culture, you know the pride, you know how important the national team is.”
This is the only line I that has me confused.

Is Arena saying "Poch does not understand how HIGH the importance level is of the national team"

or is Arena saying "Poch does not understand how LOW the importance level is of the national team"

If it is the former, Arena has to know that Argentina players, fans and coaches all hold national team play at an EXTREMELY high importance level, more so than I would say the vast majority of the planet.

If it is the latter, I don't quite understand what Arena expects Poch to do about that. The apathy goes all the way back to wet and bumpy, which Arena himself had a hand in.

I took the whole thing as saying they're not playing well because xenophobia.

This.

As tired as I am of the USMNT underperforming, I'm even more tired of hearing from our former players and managers. I wish they would all just stfu. They go on and on about the attitudes of the current players, and their supporters talk about the current players whining...but pretty much 100% of the whining that I hear is coming from the former players and managers.

tbf, I'm whining a lot too.

the players are too good to play collectively this badly. and I think everybody involved- especially former players- should be speaking up about what they're seeing.
but nothing I saw from Arena made any case that the problem was with Poch or his being foreign.

Best I can come up with is that he's arguing an outsider can't really understand what makes Americans tick and therefore how to get the best out of them. Which, I can imagine that what works to keep Die Mannschaft or La Albiceleste working cohesively might be different than what will work for the US. That's the best I've got, because yeah you certainly can't argue that an Argentinian wouldn't understand what it means to put everything on the line for the shirt.

This is a tough spot for Paxten. On the one hand he is clearly developing nicely in the Netherlands. On the other hand, if he wants a better shot at making the WC squad, playing well for Frankfurt would be more important than playing well for Utrecht.

FC Utrecht head coach Ron Jans says the club are in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt in keeping Paxten Aaronson on loan.

"We are in talks with Frankfurt. We hope we can keep him for another year. It will take a few weeks before it is clear whether it will work."

Well who saw this coming???

Sebastian Berhalter has sure come into his own. Man of the match performance tonight with work on first goal and finish on second. If he gets #USMNT call-up, it would be richly deserved.

Seb Berhalter was the best player on the field last night. One of you comp sickos should put one together of him repeatedly taking the ball off of Messi's foot & beefing with Suarez.

omg can't WAIT for the gio v seb showdown.

The Chicago Fire U15's are in a big scale tournament in Europe, with teams like PSG, Napoli, Juventus, Man City, Flamengo etc etc.

They finished 3-0-0 in the group stage and won their first knock out round game (round of 16).

They have beaten PSG and Napoli 2-0 and 3-0 respectively so far.

Bold of you to assume Gio gets called.

I don’t get to see Vancouver play much at all so the Berhlater hype has caught me off guard. Fans and media are talking like he is one of the best players in the league (not just one of the best Americans) at his position.

Check out this fantastic goal he scored against Pumas

An interesting note is that Seb Berlahter has never played a single game for any US team, at any level.

With Weston missing the Gold Cup, and as mentioned above, Gio completely out of favor at Dortmund, it will be fascinating if Poch calls him up.

Poch and his gang have been mass scouting MLS games for a while now and with Brian White already on the radar at Vancouver, they likely are very familiar with Seb.

Seb getting a full call up and Gio not would be quite the turn for those two dynasties.

Btw, I liked Papa Reyna until he royally ****ed up vs. Ghana. That would have been forgiven, but then he turned into a total **** with his kid.

Damn, I must have missed the Jedi news. I was wondering why he did not play today.

Looks like he picked up a knee injury and is not expected back until early June. This could put his Gold Cup in jeopardy.

Parades and Tolkin both left their games with injuries today.
Add Taylor Booth to the list of guys who kind of don't matter for USMNT just yet, but could have provided depth. He's been out for a couple of weeks already, with little news on what the issue is. Other than Gio, I think the past two years has been more of a setback for him than just about anyone else I had hopes for.

Crap... I'm spacing on the name of ACM MLSer who Andy and I thought was legit, but has suffered a ton of injuries nipping his career.

Pomykal!

yes that is correct. He suffered some serious injuries early in his career. Then he played a few years with out too many injuries but never really popped again quality wise.

But last year his knee was so bad they decided after just one game he had to go under the knife again. After playing just one game last year, he is just now getting back to training having not played at all this year yet.

He is 25 now and sadly not only have his windows for USMNT and Europe almost certainly closed but it is very likely any hope of being even an above average MLS midfielder will be a long shot.

Pulisic is one of only three Serie A players to have been involved in at least 50 goals (31 goals and 19 assists) over the last two seasons in all competitions, alongside Ademola Lookman (50) and Lautaro Martínez (54).

Pablo Mastroeni on Diego Luna

==================

“I don't think we can talk about Diego developing anymore. He's the guy. He's the guy that plays with the chip on his shoulder. He's one of our best defenders. He's obviously the guy that's putting the ball in the back of the net. He's doing it all for our group,” RSL's head coach said after their 3-1 win at San Diego.

“Really unusual for a player of his age to kind of carry that type of burden for a group, but his shoulders are broad and his heart is big.”

I wonder if Man City are concerned the new Philly manager seems unenthusiastic about giving Cavan decent minutes this season.

Understand Manchester City are planning for talent Cavan Sullivan to begin training with #MCFC in July, work in progress with Philadelphia Union. Sullivan, developing very well and seen as one of best young players worldwide. He will officially join Man City in 2027.

Lookman and Martinez are two of the most talked about players in Europe right now. Both supposedly have a half dozen teams or more looking at them and price tags north of $75M and $150M respectively right now. Haven't heard anything about Pulisic being desired... crazy given that level of production.

I've seen him linked to Liverpool (when Salah was likely gone) and some other big teams. I'm sure there'll be more teams interested this summer. he produces, as shown, sells a lot of shirts and opens a lot of doors in the US. but yeah, nowhere near the interest level other guys producing with similar numbers seem to be getting.

I am getting the sense that we may see more MLS players than normal on a "full squad" for the Gold Cup.

A few names I could see being considered include:

Luna - Not only a lock for the roster, I think he could start

Ream - I lean towards it being time for him to step back but I think/fear Poch may not only roster him, but start him in a few games

Steffan - I think this is the perfect proverbial "give him one more shot" last chance saloon. He is clearly in form and game time is something Turner severely lacks.

Arfsten - With Jedi's injury, he may not only have a chance to make the roster, but to maybe even start

Berhalter - The combination of Weston missing and Berhalter having an incredible year makes me think he may get called. I think it is important to let all players know that if you ball out, you are going to get noticed at the National team level

can we get that Messi kid to file a one-time switch?

🤣

After getting stuck in traffic due to an accident, Rokas Pukštas parked his car, rode a bike, and then fell into a manhole.

And eventually ran across Split ( 3.7 miles) to make it to Hajduk's morning training session. A wacky turn of events for the American this morning

TaylorTwellman on Peyton Miller:

“You can tell everyone in the world there is legitimate, real interest in Peyton Miller.”

He goes on to predict that Miller will get a transfer fee of $8-11 million.

cI had an idea for a separate USMNT thread apart from the massive soccer thread as I don't have as much of a taste for club soccer and it seems like the USMNT is at a point here where people want to actively discuss their future. From newlyretired:

Seems like a bad idea for a thread. I don't see how this thing will ever last.

The rise of Berhalter appears to have no end.

Vancouver beat Miami tonight in Champions Cup play 3-1. Berhalter had a goal and 2 assists in the win to advance to the finals.

Vancouver not only advances to the finals but they also hold the best record in MLS right now. Berhalter is their best player and Brian White (who also scored tonight) is one their best players. One, or both could get called for the Gold Cup.

Only down side is Berhalter is suspended for the Champions Cup final due to yellow cards accumulation.

I am enjoying the twitter meme of “Berhalter IN”. Lol

Sebb in and Gio out in 2025 would not have been on my bingo card.

FWIW, Seb said in the big NY Times/Athletic article they did on him that no one from US Soccer has contacted him so we may all be assuming something, that Poch is not interested in.

But from Gio's side, even with Weston out, I think there is a 50-50 or better, chance that he is left out of the Gold Cup roster if the roster is a 23 man roster*. And if Gio is still on Dortmund, I don't quite understand what will happen with the Club World Cup since he would technically be included but from all reports they have asked him to find a new team this summer.

* Note that there has been talk that Concacaf is considering significantly increasing the roster size to 28 for the Gold Cup. I can not find any info one way or another if and when they will make that decision.

I need to watch more of him, have only watched part of one game where he had some goal contributions. From that, great work rate and desire to get involved...and of course a goal and/or assist. But weirdly still didn't pop to me on the ball in terms of skills, decision making or quickness. Obviously limited viewing.

The odd part of this situation is the speed of the hype.

6 months ago, I doubt we would have seen his name in a top 75 US player list. Maybe not even a top 100 list.

Strikers can sometimes raise their profile quickly if they hit a purple patch but for a run of the mill two way midfielder to catch this much hype in such a short period of time seems unusually rare.

I wonder... the team is on fire- is that elevating his status? or the other way around- is his play igniting the team? can certainly be both.

eta: but yeah- don't think I was even aware he existed 6 months ago, let alone on the radar for the US.

I think it has to be a mix of both him playing well and the team playing well.

I don't think he has been on anyone's radar almost ever. Even with a father who was the national team head coach, he never even got a cursory call into any youth teams (and that speaks well to GGG who it appears did not call in any favors to the youth coaches).

Crazy situation for sure and the dichotomy between his rise and Gio's continued downfall is not lost on anyone looking for a story (which to be fair is helping fuel some of the hype).

Yeah, I take no position over whether Berhalter is good enough for the Nats. I haven't really watched him. I was really only workshopping my Sebb with two B's shtick and noting the irony considering that one of the rumors I heard during GioGate was that the Berhalter's and Reyna's relationship actually first deteriorated after Claudio released Seb from Austin. And that the Reynas felt that Gregg's treatment of Gio was him trying to "get even." Which would make this all kind of delicious if the failure of perhaps the highest ceiling American soccer player I've ever seen didn't make me want to sob for 96 hours straight.
