US Men's National Team (18 Viewers)

I'd love to see Zardes move to Europe.  I currently see him at the level of a team in the English championship with a high end of being a decent starter for a West Brom/Sunderland type of team.  I think it's important for his growth as we head toward the 2018 WC that he get the best coaching possible.

He just needs the German robotic ball machine to work on his touch.

For real though, his touch seemed to improve throughout the tourney, which was great to see.

I doubt Zardes makes the jump to Europe. Money for USMNT players is decent in the MLS, plus he didn't seem to have the skillset or upside that a European team is looking for.  But with the play for the USMNT lately, he'd likely qualify for a work permit.

Quit stopping by the beer spot
Last time I was there I gained 20 pounds and squeezed into a 36 Jean.

I'm now higher than that weight and m in a 32.

Some people's weakness is heroin, mine is high abv brews. I'd rather pretend they don't exist and stick to whiskey.

That's because it's made out of potatoes.

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said the USA-Argentina semifinal at the Copa Centenario was a way to judge the state of the national team program -- and it did just that."We got outplayed badly by a very good team," he told media members after the 4-0 loss to Argentina in Houston. "Today is a good day to judge where we are in program overall. We're obviously a long way off."Gulati says that should not come as any surprise."We knew that going in," he said, "but we knew we were a long way off when we beat Spain back in 2009 [Confederations Cup semifinals] or Germany or Holland [in friendlies] last year.”After the 2-0 loss to Colombia in the tournament opener, Gulati admitted the results in the last 18 months had not been what he would have hoped for and signaled that not making the knockout stage of the Copa Centenario would have likely triggered a coaching change.

The USA then ran off three straight wins to reach the semifinals against Argentina.“Obviously, tonight was disappointing.," he said. "That there’s a gap between the two teams is not a surprise. That you can win some of those games is also not a surprise. Today, that wasn’t going to happen. It was pretty clear early on. There have been some very good positives out of this [Copa Centenario], but let’s see."The biggest disappointment was that the USA was never in the game.“We just a lost a game in which we weren’t really in the game after the first three minutes," said. "It’s hard to ask me about feelings. Today, is a disappointment that it wasn’t a more competitive game. But overall, the performance of the team to get here, absolutely that’s a positive.”Gulati also looked on the positive side that the USA will quickly get a chance to put the Argentina game behind it."We’ve got another game against a team that’s ranked top-five in the world," he said of Saturday's third-place game at the University of Phoenix Stadium. That opponent will be Colombia, a 2-0 loser to Chile in Wednesday's semifinals. The game will give the USA a chance to see how much it has progressed since dropping the tournament opener to the Cafeteros

Too hard to tell who's going to come out to play to win and who's not.... but played the Over 2.5 goals -140 (yuck) for a bit of my winnings from dropping entire account on Argentina to win in regulation.

I dunno. what he is, is explosive- and that's a quality that any team is going to want. it's been cool watching him this cup- if/when he gets his first touch down in the MF, he's routinely able to put a defender on his back foot and take him either inside or outside, opening up space for himself and his team- dropping a shoulder and/or taking a quick touch and exploding clear. he's also got a great understanding of making runs forward into space (definitely learned that from Keane). could use work on showing back, holding the ball and of course his first touch (but you're right- it's been pretty good this cup).

I could see him making the jump to a lower tier, top league team for sure. but bottom line, he needs to be playing- and I think he'd be on the cusp in europe, not guaranteed of that, so staying home gets him the guaranteed PT. but more money and the off-chance that he can break through like Yedlin- much bigger upside making that jump.

his play, the spacing of the MFs (Zardoz and Bedoya specifically) and Wood's fantastic runs have been the revelations of the copa for me.

"We knew that going in," he said, "but we knew we were a long way off when we beat Spain back in 2009 [Confederations Cup semifinals] or Germany or Holland [in friendlies] last year.”

I wish any one associated with US Soccer who mentions friendly wins in any context other than "the results are meaningless" would get an electric shock.

I was going to get tickets in the AO section for the Sept 6th game in Jacksonville (about a 5hr drive for me) against T&T.

I think this has been asked before, but is there any reason to be leery about bringing my 11 and 12 year old boys to the game in the same section?  I'm assuming it'll be totally fine - except for some cursing, but that's no bother for me.

Yeah, that age should be absolutely no issues if you don't care about cursing.  I have brought nephews to games in the supporters sections younger than that and they had a blast.

One note, and it may not make a difference to you or your kids but there is a decent chance that game will be meaningless for qualification.  If the US wins in St Vincent and T&T wins at home against Guat, both T&T and the US will advance with out any regard of the outcome of the last game.

For me, it may matter - as it may impact who is called in for the game... But, my kids want to see the USMNT.  I'll take a day or two off of school for them and we'll have a blast.

Only thing I'll have to decide is whether we do the march to the match or go in early with the hopes that my kids can get autographs (apparently, autographs are the lifeblood of 11 and 12 year olds). haha

My two kids are < 12 and went with me to the Copa match vs Costa Rica in Chicago. We sat in the AO section and had no issues at all. I've also sat with the Outlaws on two other occasions and while my kids weren't with me for those there were no issues that I would have regretted bringing them to the match. The only two potential issues are some cussing (as mentioned by NewlyRetired) & possibly getting beer on you after a US goal (didn't happen to us but next section over had some throwing it into the air). My experiences with the Outlaws is that they are loud and fired up but at the same time very cordial and courteous.

Pretty sure that's not Gulati talking, it's the author of the article.
No, that was Gulati talking.  Authors don't put their own writing in quotes.

Jurgen Klinsmann was installed as the odds-on favorite to become the head coach of English Premier League soccer team Southampton on Thursday, casting some doubt over his future in charge of the United States national team.

London bookmakers were thrown into a panic by a “massive” flurry of wagers on Klinsmann to replace former boss Ronald Koeman, who accepted a contract from EPL rival Everton last week.

As of Thursday morning, Klinsmann was generally priced at 1-to-3 odds, having been available at 40-to-1 earlier in the week.

Klinsmann has been in charge of the U.S. program since 2011 and this week took the team to the semifinals of the Copa America, where it was defeated 4-0 by Argentina.

More places seem to be picking up on this.  Can you guys who bet understand why so much money would move to JK on just a whim?

====================================

“There was a massive and sudden move in the betting market odds for Klinsmann,” Alex Donohue, spokesman for gambling firm Ladbrokes, told USA TODAY Sports. “All signs point to bettors expecting an announcement and some news very soon.”

Southampton’s media relations office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY Sports.

British betting analysis company smartbets.com revealed that in the past 48 hours, 95% of all bets of the new Southampton coach market had been placed on Klinsmann.

The vast majority of those were from the region around the south coast of England, where Southampton is located. Donohue said that factor, plus the fact that bettors were prepared to gamble even at very short odds, was telling.

“Usually you don’t risk your money for a limited return unless you are very sure of something,” he added.

It was expected that if the high proportion of bets for Klinsmann continued, the bookmakers would suspend the market to protect themselves against further liability.

Alan Alger, of betting company Betway, said the wave of support for Klinsmann had come as a “shock” and was “drastic” compared to similar previous situations.

However, Alger noted that despite some criticism for his achievements with the U.S., the German’s reputation in England was still high following his successful playing stint with Tottenham in the mid-1990s. Klinsmann “looks destined to be back in the Premier League very soon,” Alger said.

If you decide against AO tickets, the presale for that match started this morning. Got lower level between midfield  and the 18 for 58 plus fees.

Fine by me. He has no idea how to pick a lineup, which is the most important part of the job IMO. Wondo was the last straw.

Just hire a good technical director and then pick a coach who isn't always trying to prove that he's the smartest guy in the room
