US Men's National Team (7 Viewers)

I think the ESPN picks maybe underestimate home field, but there isn't an easy game in the group - and starting with the hardest match is always tricky.

Alright!  Kit talk!  I love teams that stick with one iconic look.  I'm not just talking Brazil or Argentina.  Peru hasn't done #### internationally (OK, I think they won the Copa once in the Teofilo Cubillas era, but I'm not sure), but they've rocked the red sash look since before I was born.  I love it.

My fave too.

my first subuteo team was Peru... Stuck with me ever since.

The last 5 US home friendly matches have drawn under 10k.  I think I read this is the first time this has happened since the 80's.

This is likely a combination of ticket pricing and oversaturation.   We still have a relatively limited fan base and with so many fans either going to MLS games and or watching an ever increasing amount of soccer of all kinds on tv, I wonder if we are reaching a tipping point?

The games that matter still seem to be a draw.  They are expecting over 60k for the game against Colombia.

I wonder about a tipping point. I'd agree that for this recent run it's more about location, opponent, what's at stake, day/time of day, and pricing. I'd even scratch location- I've seen some friendlies in the NYC area that were pretty woefully attended.

that colombia game... I'm predicting a lot of loud, yellow shirts in the stands. hoping that I'm wrong here, but given what I'm used to seeing, I'd guess 60-40.

I am hoping for 70-30.

There are only 65k Colombians who live in Cali (compared with 300k that live in Florida), so that should help the makeup even if the Colombian fans travel.

Just got tix as a 50th bday present for the Costa Rica match in Chicago in the AO section. Was already looking forward to Copa America but getting really jazzed now!

Is there anyone in here with a ticket to Friday's match? I'm still on the fence with this but there are some decent tickets on the ao site and I'm debating pulling the trigger.

My girlfriend and I are going...we got tickets on Stubhub for 185 per...face value was 90.  (section 412 I think)

I would offer to meet up but gf would be weird about it.

for clarity, would she be weird about meeting a geek from the internet... or that YOU'RE a geek from teh internet.

definitely the latter, although I'm pretty sure she's figured that out
smart.

the people in this place have literally put a roof over my head by providing work when I've been laid off (work that continues to this day, almost 10 years later), and offers of anything from housing to clothes and toys when our apt building sustained a fire leaving us homeless for a year. but heaven forbid I actually take some time away from the wife to meet any of these same geeks supermen who would sell their first-born to help a brother ffa.

yeah... I just don't get Jozy at all. I've seen him do all of those things- really well. but then it all falls apart and he does none of them. him following on EJ's playing days was like night and day- seemed like a really soccer smart player. but honestly can't determine wtf happens with him- if it's purely tactical, that he needs a certain formation in which to thrive... or if he's just inconsistent. combo of both likely.
In the past, I think you have mentioned that Jozy was at his best when he had a mobile partner next to him like Charlie Davies.

Wood is probably the closest approximation to pre injury Davies we have had come through the system.  I wonder if they would do well in a traditional 2 striker format?

tbh- I thought jozy was at his best in holland, with 2-3 guys consistently running off and with him.

but yeah, it's hard not to think of Davies looking at the manner in which Woods has been playing lately with his physical runs and ball-winning. but I also don't recall Woods showing the same partnering skills previously. Davies and Jozy had a nice understanding together that I haven't seen Woods flash just yet.

gooseman

yeti, cam, brooks, fab

...... caillou

Germany, bedoya

zardoz    woods

....... doose.
I hope he doesn't do it, but JK has hinted that, at least for Colombia, he's considering still starting Beckerman to man-mark James.  If he plays the 4-3-3 with Bradley holding, that appears to be the likely lineup.

With Copa America starting tomorrow I was thinking about where this tournament ranks with others for the US. WC is obviously #1 but curious where this group would place Copa next to the Hex and Gold Cup.

I say: #1 WC, #2 Hex, #3 Copa, #4 Gold Cup

The Hex is just so intense with the WC on the line I think it's #2. Given the competition of Copa and that we rarely participate I think it's justified ahead of Gold Cup.

Yea hex has to be above anything.

Any guesses on if we continue participation in the Copa going forward? It's pretty exciting to be in a big tournament for once.

I've been thinking about this too.

It's a tournament you want to do well in obviously, but it's also kind of a gimmicky one-off (though a very cool one) so I question the stakes involved, not so much for the US and Mexico, but for the big SA teams.

Gold Cup is still about being the best team in your confed, so I still have it ahead of this, though clearly CONCACAF is a joke.

Right now, I'd probably rank it in the same tier as the Confederations Cup but above it.  However, that opinion may change as the tournament unfolds.

The US would have to be invited to participate. CONMEBOL has 10 members so they traditionally invite 2 teams to fill out the brackets. Mexico seems to almost always get an invite, but the US has participated in the past. In the years where Copa is running in the same summer as the Gold Cup, USSoccer's MO has been to focus on the Gold. The next scheduled Copa is 2019 in Brazil.
