Regarding it doesn't matter...it's all in fun to compare and discuss right? I don't know about others but I ABSOLUTELY do NOT rationalize defeat because it's something other than the WC! Back in my playing days I was very competitive and hated losing at anything. About the only time I don't get pissed when the USMNT loses is if it's a friendly and even then I'm not exactly in a good mood.

:bag: n00b/very casual fan here. Can someone give me a quick rundown of what this is (or point me to a good resource)? To clarify, I get what the tournament itself is, but I just don't have the knowledge of all the stages/steps of qualifying. Was talking with a GB the other night and he said US has to pretty much win to qualify for the WC? I promise I won't n00b up this thread but will be watching tonight. TIA

I was thinking about this the other day.

Someone was asking where will Pulisic end up as a player in comparison to other US players.

I think we may have to break that down into 2 different categories

1) His success at club level

2) His success for the US

No one can argue that he is off to the best club start of any US player in history.  If he stays healthy, it is hard to imagine him not having the longest and best club career ever for a US player.

If we can agree for now that Landon is the best player ever for category number 2, can Pulisic match what Landon did? 

*Landon had a better youth career than Pulisic but Pulisic broke into the full national team earlier than Landon did.

*Someone is going to break Landon's US goal scoring record some day, but I always maintain that the scoring record never made Landon special.  What made him special is that he not only held the scoring record but simultaneously holds the assist record.  That is a VERY unique double in world soccer where your prime goal scorers are rarely your top assist men.

And his record for assist is mind boggling compared to other US players.  Landon has 58 assists.  The guy in second only has 22.   That is a amazing gap between #1 and #2 when the #1 guy also holds the scoring record.

The two guys chasing Landon for the scoring record (Dempsey and Jozy) have 22 assists combined.

GB knows even less than you.  So you have that going for you.

This is a one-off tournament pitting the best South American and North American teams together.  There are 16 teams playing - they are in 4 groups of 4.  In the group stage, each team plays the other teams in its group once - top two teams in each group advance to the knock-out stage.

The Knock-out stage resembles any other bracketed tournament - 8 teams will play in quarter finals, 4 teams advance to semi-finals, and 2 teams play for the title.

USA is in a group with Colombia, Costa Rica, and Paraguay.  You can find predictions ranging from the US winning the group, to finishing 4th in the Group.

This may impact Klinsmann's job, but has no bearing on WC qualifying.

I have heard the after market prices for tickets for some games like this are very affordable.  You might want to look into that.  I have heard of people picking up tickets for around $10 at some of the after market sites.

 
Starting to get very stoked...leaving in about 30 minutes for Levi's stadium...will be there at least 90 minutes early.  :ph34r:

I really want to see Pulisic on the pitch...that would be the highlight for me.

One small effect -- performances in the cup count in a national team's ranking, which can affect grouping in the WC. But there's an awful lot of games that go into that score so the overall effect is probably negligible, especially two years before the WC.

The US results only affect whether they can ever get a number 1 seed or not.  Other than that very unlikely case, the US will be placed in the same pots as the other CONCACAF teams whether they are ranked higher or lower than other countries.

Remember the World Cup grouping is based on region more than ranking.  Only getting in the first pot really matters, after that your ranking has little to do with what pot you land in.

 
My friend is texting pics from his seat, directly behind the Colombia bench. He's honestly close enough to easily toss a bag of piss into James' lap.

My daughter just asked why I hate Columbia so much; because they're Latinos, and her Mother (& my children by "proxy"), are Latina/Puerto Rican...I told her I love all Latinos, under a certain land-level elevation (sorry, gb Sebowski).  Forza America, #### Colombia!!...dontthinkmydaughterheardthat

:unsure: ...Jesus Christ...did I just say" my children by proxy"...They're mine!  I swear it to be true!!  I swear to God, I was born with my foot in my mouth.  Sheesh.
