He scored a goal in the first friendly a few days ago, cleaning up a rebound on Robben's shot. Not to get my hopes up, but the one comment I've read most about him is yours - that he looks stronger.

 
from the match commentary, Green has forced two big saves by Caballero in the past 10 minutes. I'm such a loser to be following this - back to work now.

Crap.  Hyndman got hurt in training and will be out around 3 weeks which means the season will be close to starting and he would have had little time time to impress during the preseason.  I fear his minutes are going to be low in the early part of the season.

 
Serious question from someone who never played soccer past like 2nd grade....why do so many guys get hurt in training? Doesn't seem to happen in other sports (other than football)

Just seems weird that there are so many practice injuries in a sport where you can pretty much have non contact training most of the time

The best I can guess is that so many soccer related injuries, due to the players movements can be non contract related (blown out knees, twisted/sprained ankles, hamstring issues etc).

 
Well,  Julian Green looks to be having a great summer training period so far.  Pulisic, on the other hand, continues to see more obstacles in his way for seeing the pitch.  Dortmund just signed Mario Gotze, bringing another attacking mid into the fold.

 
Gotze seems very much a Mkhitaryan replacement to me. 

I'm glad Green seems to be doing well in the time he gets while the veterans get fit, but I think I'd rather compete with Reus for the 60% of the time he is fit, Gotze, and Dembele for playing time as opposed to Douglas Costa, Robben, Ribery, Kingsley Coman, and Renato Sanches.

yeah, but green is competing for a decent loan, not PT at bayern... unless I missed something?

don't baseball players constantly get hurt in non-contact things? ... oh ... right... you said "sport".

I never played anywhere near this level- but from what I've heard from friends who have, it's guys fighting for their lives/careers/spots from the git-go... full speed, all-in, flying into tackles, etc. not sure where your "non-contact training" comment is coming from... is that an understood method of training for pros now?

One would hope.  Worst case scenario is that he plays just well enough to stay on the team (because Ribery and Robben aren't exactly iron men) but is still at best 4th in the pecking order even when there are injuries.  That would suck. 

I was mostly just making fun of the types of articles you get during silly season.  Like the "coach-speak" training camp articles in the NFL that cause you to draft Bishop Stankey in your fantasy draft.

 
Dortmund beat Man United 4-1 today in China.  Pulisic subbed in around the 63rd minute.  Dortmund made 8 changes at the same time.

This was Dortmund with out either Gotze or Schurrle.  I am getting the feeling that Pulisic might start the season in the youth ranks until someone gets hurt.

If Gortze and Schurrle fit into the team nicely, Dortmund are loaded with talent this year and could pose an actual competition for Bayern.

I am having a hard time evaluating this move.

As always if he gets a chance to play at Columbus, this should be a solid move for a 21 year old but Columbus just re-signed their keeper to a multi year deal a couple of months ago.  From what I have read he has not had a great season though.

Hopefully Steffen will get a clear chance to compete for the #1 spot starting next spring.

I read on ESPN that Steffen was slated as the #3 for team in Germany. #2 at worst in Colombus... a little step up.

Hopefully but with Columbus not in any cup competitions, chances to play might be limited this season.  Hopefully if and when he gets a chance he can impress.  I loved what I saw of him at the youth level.

 
Yedlin and CCV both on the Aussie tour with Spurs - who sent a very mixed squad, leaving out all the England and Belgian Euro player and Lloris.  So, both should get some minutes against Juve and Atletico this week.

Yedlin was pictured on the team site in a training photo - most supporters want him gone, mostly because he is American, but it was interesting to see the photo - since they typically do not show photos of players who are definitely leaving.  There were a few players left out of the Aussie tour who are expected to leave this summer.

I don't think it's that - they are not necessarily elite, but the bigger issue is getting the right players into the right system. Too often with national teams, you take "popular" players and then try to shoehorn them into positions that do not fit their strengths.   

A country like England has enough quality, that they should pick a system, then find players to fit that system. The US is different in that we do not have enough quality, so we simply have to make do with what we have.

 
England is a mid table team that thinks they have the talent to make a run. They don't.

Portugal winning this year, Greece in 2004, those were against the odds wins with a whole bunch of luck thrown in.  But those teams played really hard nosed, defensive football. England doesn't do that, nor do they have the players or leadership to do that.

They dominate their qualifying groups but any time they seem to come up against countries that rise above a Euro minnow or Euro mid table type team, they seem to find various ways to lose.

And this is not one coach or one generation of players, we are talking numerous coaches and numerous generations of players.

I think I read a stat that stated starting from the 1992 Euro's, England have only won 3 knockout round games in the WC and Euro's.  Which is the exact same number of knock out round games the US has won in the WC and Copa.

That is a pretty telling stat over such a long time period and numerous tournaments which helps remove a bit of variance in the stats.

A few bits from Spurs:

This is from a reliable ITK, whose mate is an agent:  Now for a slight bit of back tracking. My mate still thinks he will be going one way or another, but Yedlin has impressed both in the fitness tests and more importantly how far he has come in a year. He was miles behind this time last season but has improved a lot in a short space of time. 

Its notable because he has not been a fan of Yedlin's since the start - hence the backtracking.  Walker is not on the Aussie tour, so Yedlin should get plenty of opportunity to compete with Trippier for the back-up spot - or to open some eyes for a EPL loan.

Also, CCV is on the Aussie tour, and another ITK (less reliable) chimed in that Pochettino "loves CCV".  Absent something falling in their lap, Spurs are done with incoming transfers (Georges-Kevin N'koudou should be announced early this week), and while they kicked the tires on a few CBs, they are not bringing anyone in.  Wimmer just signed a new contract this summer, and he will fill in for Vertonghen at the start of the season, but there is no real back-up for Alderweireld.  So, CCV may be staying at Spurs this season rather than going out on loan.

Yeah, America has already given Dom Sydney LaRoux.  I'm not sure how much more generous we need to be. 

Doubt KC would sell him for $3m, anyway. They literally have no goal scorers behind him. 

 
Will Packwood  was one of the bright shining lights in our youth program.  He stared for multiple US youth national teams and joined Birmingham Cities youth program when he was 14.  He got some good playing time in the English Championship at 18 and 19 years old at CB which is pretty rare.

Now at 23 years he might be out of the game all together.  So sad :(
