US Men's National Team (25 Viewers)

Look who's the bookies' favorite for the Hull City job.

Poisoned chalice is you ask me.
I expected JK's name.  I was pleasantly surprised.  If Bradley was not American, he would be in a top league by now coaching I think.

I feel like American coaches today must be similarly treated to how American players were back in the early 90's in Europe.

did he ever emerge after leaving Sacramento?  It is like he fell off the map after he did not get the Leicester job.
The last I heard, he was advising Milan Mandaric (who has bought and sold Portsmouth, Leicester City, and Sheffield Wednesday) on his next club to purchase and would then presumably take over the coaching of that team.  From what I gather, that would not be a Premiere League team as Mandaric doesn't have that type of money.  Mandaric tends to try to do reclamation jobs and then flip the clubs.

So I take it Arsenal is playing in San Jose today? Half my flight from Burbank is filled with people in Arsenal kits. Is this what happens now that Brexit has occurred?

(I did Google to see MLS all stars versus arsenal tonight).

Who is Arsenal's rival so I can troll my row mates.

Spurs

But that might not end well for you :oldunsure:

Just a note to keep track of.

As of now, there is no TV scheduled for the next qualifier.

I am 90% sure beIN holds the English rights to the game but have not listed a schedule yet.

I am hoping that the game will also be on NBC Universo (spanish), which is what happened the last time beIN showed a qualifier if memory serves.

As soon as wheels up I am yelling "Tottenham Hot Spurs". Will then take it from there. Doesn't Yedlin play for them?

I don't know who our next technical director will be once the JK era is over after 2018, but I hope the first thing he does is flies to Dallas and learns exactly what they are doing at their academy teams and tries to spread that knowledge across the country.

Yesterday the FC Dallas academy teams won the national championships at both the U16 and U18 levels.  Their U15 team is currently in the national semi finals and their U14 side went undefeated for the entire season.

That is an incredible record across multiple age groups.
I was just looking at Brad Friedels roster for an upcoming tournament for his U19 squad and I think he picked 6 players (out of 22) from FC Dallas's academy system.

So with August almost here, what players are we hoping can secure a decent loan?

Miazga , Zelalem, and Yedlin seem the most obvious.

The old man and Eric Palmer Brown can probably both survive one more year in the youth ranks with no real issues

Julian Green, on his last year of his contract, might be less likely to move on a loan but it is still a possibility.

Whom else?

Yedlin is going to come down to the wire, I think.  He has turned some heads in his limited pre-season, and has one more opportunity to impress tomorrow morning against Atletico.  There have been a few rumors swirling around teams interested in Trippier in the last week or so - so there is a chance Yedlin stays to back-up Walker.  If (still a big IF), he stays, I think he could expect to see 20+ games this season.  Last year Trippier made 25 appearances, but most were in Europa - I expect Walker to play most CL games this season, but Pochettino likes to rotate the FBs, so that could open up a few extra league games for the back-up.  With Sam gone from Sunderland, not sure they will renew their interest, so it could take a few weeks for teams to figure out their needs - pushing any Yedlin deal closer to deadline day.

Pochettino was quoted today as saying they are happy with the CBs on the squad - confirming that they are unlikely to bring any in.  However, in the same interview, he suggested CCV is realistically 6th or 7th on the depth chart (listed Dier and Wanyama as CB options before listing CCV and Ball).  Given that Spurs only have 3 full-time CBs, I expect them to keep CCV and Ball in the reserve/U21 team.

Seems like the others are either already at teams of the proper level (Rubin, the BL2 guys) or still young enough to be in the youth setup (Wright, Lennon, Perez).

Zelalem with a major chance to impress now.  He's on the field!!

CCV and Yedlin both got the start against Atletico - both on the left side.  The good news for CCV is that he got the start while Ball did not after the Juve game.  The bad news is he seems to be settling into the LCB role, which would put him behind Vertonghen and Wimmer.  He is playing well though.  Loads of confidence.

Yedlin again gets the LB role, and has played well, with the caveat that he is playing LB.  Looks very confident on the ball and positioning, but no real threatening balls into the box.  His best attacking move has been to beat his man to the end line and draw a corner from a diving tackle.  Something I have noticed about him in the last couple of games - he seem quicker, not just fast, but that quick first step, and he seems stronger - upper body.  If he does not beat out Trippier, I hope he gets a good loan - this could be a real break out year for him if he gets the games.

ETA - Yedlin ended up getting an hour, looked more assured than Trippier today, despite playing on the left.  CCV went the entire game, had one dodgy foul just outside the box, but played well.  Only Atletico goal was off a set piece and not on CCV.

I want Acosta to be the USMNT LB in the coming years.
He caught my eye last night too; looked pretty decent.  How's his speed?  Is he the same Acosta that played on the Olympic qualifying team this year?  I seem to remember him being slow, but I could be confusing him with someone else.

I don't think that's new.  One of the first things I noticed about him is that he's so explosive he's able to create enough space for a cross on his first step.  There been some pretty good defenders that haven't been able to stop it.

Yes, that is the same Acosta.

I hope we don't keep trying to play Acosta as a full back.  I think his best position is clearly CM, and I think the Olympic team really could have used his energy and ground covering in the center of the pitch.  Trapp and Hyndman just got overrun.

I was happy with Rosenberry's performance last night.  He certainly did not look out of place.

Keegan basically did Keegan things last night - he's not super pacy (though certainly not unathletic by any means) but he plays super smart, his angles and defensive positioning are almost always correct, and despite all that star power in the attack, he even got forward a few times and delivered a wicked low cross late in the first half that Sasha needed to do better with.

That, plus some nice saves from Blake.  Overall good showing from the Union

Did you see the game?  Any notes on the Atlético players?

I had no idea Kevin Keegan had come out of retirement. nice pick up for the Union.

They all sucked.

No, they played well enough.  Oblak made a couple of world-class saves.  Godin had the goal off a set-piece.  Its still early, but they did not pose much threat on the attacking end (had to check, but the goal was the only shot on goal).  This may have been Atletico's first pre-season game, but they should have done better against two U21 CBs  Griezmann obviously not there, Torres made a few decent runs, but nothing on the end of them.  Defensively they were better, but Spurs did get off a number of shots - in addition to the Oblak saves, Spurs hid the woodwork twice.  Spurs were probably the better team on the whole, but Atletico did not crack.

Atlético de Madrid (4-4-2): Oblak; Vrsaljko, Godín, Savic, Filipe; Gabi, Thomas, Tiago, Saúl; Héctor y Torres.

Thanks for the update. That's a mixed first and second team lineup. No Juanfran, Koke, Gaitán, Carrasco, or Grizi.  Those last three are the best creative / attacking players for Atleti.

I gotta think they are still trying t bring in another striker.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by Vrsaljko, once he settles in... he's quality.

back-up to Valdes, or legitimate competition?
Valdes was in poor form at the end of last season, but he's a better GK than Guzan normally.  I would have to believe that Guzan was given assurances that he would have a fair chance to win the spot or he'd have looked elsewhere.

2012 Victor Valdes was a better goalkeeper than Brad Guzan.  I'm not sure about Valdes since his injury.  And it's been several years.  By all accounts, it's expected to be an open competition (perhaps even a three way one with some Greek guy in the mix).

Good to hear.  I liked what I saw at the Euros.  But he's got to beat Juanfran out, who's been a top 3 soldier (Godín, Gabi are the others) for Simeone.  He's like 7 years younger, so I am thinking that this is for a) depth and b) future pipeline.

when is this Vrsalko kid eligible to play for the nats?

Godin & Juafran are two of the current footballers that I respect the most...there is a maturity & presence about them that commands a respect that is increasingly rare in  soccer these  days...like Ween said/sang..."I CANT PUT MY FINGER ON IT!"

Eta: @Floppo...you're right, I keep mixing these threads like drinks
