US Men's National Team (20 Viewers)

but to say this club is a bad destination for a young player is stupid.
seems harsh...

People have opinions all the time.  Doesn't make them right, wrong, smart or stupid.  Its just an opinion.

I think Miazga going to Chelsea was not wise.  I think Pulisc going to Chelsea is a good move.  I could be wrong on both counts.

We will see.  Revenues will be down this year with no CL.  And Chelsea abandoned plans to invest in a new stadium or upgrade Stamford Bridge after England denied a work-permit for Abramovich.  This is not the same old Abramovich.

Hazard is almost certainly off - Sarri's recent comments suggested that the club want a decision ASAP from him.  Assuming Hazard does leave for RM this summer, Pulisic will not be the only AM Chelsea bring in with that money.
Its surely possible Hazard will leave, especially if Real Madrid want him, but I've not seen anything but pure rumor about it.  I've not read anything from Sarri of significance on this, nor would I expect his public comments to tell us much of anything. The odd thing is reading that a team that plays a 4-3-3 can't buy a young winger when they already have 3 established starters.  Willian and Pedro are over 30. Is it that odd to add a 4th winger to this situation, especially a 20 year old who will need some time to be ready? Hudson-Odoi is 18.  Are people worried that Pulisic might face competition from Victor Moses?  Don't City and LFC regularly rotate 4 world-class wingers?

I also would have rather seen him go to a team like the Spurs where he’d have more latitude to mature.  As previously mentioned, Chelsea is not a pillar of stability.
Define "pillar of stability"

Chelsea are still a club with title and CL ambitions.  I think they will continue to operate with those goals in mind.  Something else to consider when it comes to Chelsea - while I don't think Abramovich is going to sink any money into the club to fund player transfers - I think the new player loan rules will come into play this summer.  That means that Chelsea are going to be selling a lot of players - raising money to fund 1st team acquisitions.

Seems everyone except Dortmund fans want to #### all over this move.  It makes me want to see him succeed even more.

there is still a negative American bias, especially in the English fan base but from most of what I have seen, many are questioning the amount (as are many US fans as it seems extraordinary even given the potential marketing bonus's).

I'm guessing people are seeing the rotating list of managers and worrying that it'll be hard to gain any long-term traction on the team for a player if the managers' shelf-life is limited. remember when hazard couldn't find playing time? wait... lol... wasn't that under jose?

I'm with clete- this is a top club with top ambitions and CP is clearly testing himself in the JK prescribed manner. I said it before- I think he's good enough to be an important part of Chelsea's future, regardless of the manager. would be great if he can elevate his game to hazard levels- but IMO he's definitely a step up from Pedro (who I like, but who has less upside and is older).

it would've been great for him to have been reunited with klopp in terms of continuity. he'd be platooning with the musclebound hobbit for  the foreseeable future- but would get PT, I'd think.

United? we have no idea who the manager will be. it's hard to tell what's going on there- other than that they have a long history and perpetual

Chelsea just announced all-time record revenues of £443m. The club made a £113m profit on player sales alone last season.  If CP signed a 6 year deal as reported, this transfer fee is easily manageable.  The Chelsea owner has never been a for-profits owner, and has always invested in the club to win titles.  I don't think this has anything to do with Hazard.  The club said it was part of its long-term plan, decided before Sarri arrived, which makes sense given Willian and Pedro are both over 30.

They think $73M to come next summer is selling low?!

"Its a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club" -Christian Pulisic

This is so damn cool. Millions of Americans rooting for the Blues just as soccer takes off in America! Are you all as excited as me?

We have different definitions of "cool".

And FWIW no issue whatsoever with the transfer price.

1. He fills a dire position of need with Pedro and Willian over 30.

2. Fits the Sarri system

3. Becomes the most marketable US soccer player ever. Chelsea will make back their money on licensing, TV, etc alone.

I do hope they keep Hudson Odoi and swap out Morata for another striker.

You mean like this?

Tuchel (July 2015 - May 2017)
Bosz (July 2017 - December 2017)
Stoger (December 2017 - June 2018)
Favre (June 2018 - current)

Not sure that helps;

Pulisic went from budding prospect, to starter, to squad player amongst all the changes.

I think the managerial upheaval is the least of Pulisic's worries.

Fans love to complain about escalating player costs, but I don't think this will be a problem for the player or club.  Raph Honigstein has a short piece on ESPN today.  He says Chelsea made contact on CP last summer, and were concerned with a bidding war this coming summer due to interest from Bayern, United, LFC and others.  Dortmund wanted to avoid another ugly departure saga like they have had in recent years (Dembele, Aubamayang, Lewa, Goetze).  CP told them some time ago he planned to leave, but wanted to do it right, not screw the club.  This is a win-win-win, great example of a well-done transfer on all sides.

I know this shatters the American transfer record.  Is it also the record for Concacaf?
Transfermarkt lists the deal as the 15th most expensive transfer ever - but it may be missing a few (as it does not include Neymar's move to PSG, presumably because Neymar bought out his own contract, rather than PSG paying a transfer fee, wink, wink).

It is the most expensive transfer for a 20-yo - just out doing the deal to send Sterling to Man City.

Also, I think the marketing angle on this acquisition is way overblown.  This might be a very minor check in the plus column for CFC on this player, but no more than that.  He's got to succeed on the field for this to be a successful acquisition.

Tutul Rahman‏ @tutulismyname

Here's a fun fact. No English player has been sold for as much as Pulisic. Only 12 countries can claim a player more expensive than the American: BRA, FRA, POR, WAL, ARG, BEL, NED, URU, ESP, COL, SWE, ALG

Particularly for a club like Chelsea - who already have a huge following in the US.  There will be more, but not appreciably more, and the way things like Shirt deals are done - Nike will see more of the bump in revenue than Chelsea.

True, but every 7-13 year old will want one.

I know it doesn’t mean much, but I think this is a slam dunk move for Chelsea and CP.

not sure if he's been back in since his shambolic red card- but he yedlin was in the lineup today in the losing cause against MU.

Its always funny to see armchair fans who think they know better than a player and his advisers what is best for his career.  He may succeed or flame out at Chelsea, but this move gives him every opportunity to realize his dream if he continues to work hard.  Of course, any of the top clubs in the world would do the same.  Liverpool, United, Arsenal, etc. - they all have a long list of young prodigies they signed who flamed out.  I know you're still new to this and emotional about it, but to say this club is a bad destination for a young player is stupid.
I’m not new to this.  I’ve seen many young players get lost in the Chelsea system.  Chelsea also has a major problem rotating managers.  Sarri said today he didn’t really know Pulisic was being signed.

I think it was a poor choice.  Of course it’s an armchair decision. But if we stop saying what we think, what’s the point of a message board.

If it wasn’t done for marketing, it was even more outrageous.  Marketing is the only reason you overpay this much.

speaking of Hazard, German pundits are saying Dortmund will sign Thorgan Hazard to replace Pulisic.
Brilliant team.  Sign Sancho for 8M, he relegates Pulisic to the bench, then they somehow get 60M for Pulisic and then sign T. Hazard and are better off on the field and in the pocketbook.

They are fleecing people.

For the record Liverpool and City would have been poor choices too.  I strongly felt that Tottenham was the ideal destination for Pulisic and am disappointed it didn’t happen.

I disagree.  He signed a 6 year deal.  Almost every sponsorship deal Chelsea has will be redone within this contract.  I'd be willing to bet that they see $30-40M extra in those contracts just because sponsors want to be able to be attached to Pulisic.

Young players fail at big clubs all the time.  There isn't a top club in the world where it doesn't happen, at Chelsea and anywhere else.  To say you've "seen many players get lost" at Chelsea and imply that's something inherent in the club is just made up internet BS imo.  I think its better to trust the player and his father as opposed to thinking we know whats best for him and his career.  With his contract situation, he probably could pick his destination.

There should be no surprise at all with Sarri's post game comment today, although I saw someone else completely misinterpreting it on twitter a little earlier.  He said he was consulted and approved the deal about a month ago, but did not know the deal was closing yesterday.  This is business as usual for this club and every other club.

Chelsea couldn't even beat Southampton at home today.  They need CP now more than ever.

I agree.  I've watched a lot of Dortmund over the last 3 years and I'd easily consider them my favorite German team.  I'm still gonna watch them next year just because they play fun attacking football.

Their scouting department is second to none IMO.  They also PLAY their youth, which gives them a huge advantage when fighting for players.

It is really an impressive operation.

Not only do I think they have the highest attendance average in the world, they may also be at the very top in terms of positive transfer fees the last 10 years.

Just think what some one in England is going to pay for Sancho...

It is cringe worthy how some knuckle heads (including some that should know better) are twisting his broken English.   Look at what his chairman from Napoli said.  This is just how Sarri works.

=========================================

“I used to say to Sarri, who shall we buy? He’d reply that he didn’t want to know anything about it.”

Those are the words of Napoli chairman Aurelio De Laurentiis, speaking last month about Napoli’s former manager, Maurizio Sarri.

Serious question:..where should he have gone?
