best part of both Weah goals is he appears to be the furthest player up the field for Celtic in a pure #9 role.   I know the competition is very weak in comparison to Celtic but goals are goals and this can only be good for a young attackers confidence.

exactly... weak or not, kid comes in and straight away starts scoring goals. any old firm matchups coming up?

and what was the score when he came on- was it close, blowout?

He came on in the 64' when it was 3-0.  He scored in the 88' to make it 4-0.

game-changer!

well- regardless, as andy mentioned... he's still scoring. that'll give the team and him confidence to put him in when it matters... hopefully.

Weah has played only 190 minutes since the season started in late August, but he has some how managed 4 goals in that time frame.  He has only appeared in one game where he did not score.

Wow... Pretty crazy.

Of course the way to minutes for Celtic might be a tad easier than hoping mbape and neymar get the flue.

FC Bayern have signed 18-year-old center-back Chris Richards on a four-and-a-half-year contract until June 30, 2023. The Alabama native, who was initially signed on loan to the U19s from Major League Soccer side FC Dallas in July 2018, has amassed over 1700 minutes of play in more than 20 competitive matches with the German giants. He also featured in the club’s first team during the 2018 Audi Summer Tour.

"We are very happy that we have agreed Chris’ transfer from FC Dallas," says FC Bayern Campus Manager, Jochen Sauer. "Chris has represented us very well in the last six months and we are convinced that he will continue to develop well here at FC Bayern. We see great potential in him," he added.

How did Nick Saban miss this kid?

Interesting!  Dallas took a similar approach to NY with Adams.  They sold Richards for a small value ($1.5m) but have attached a massive 40% sell on fee.

Humble brag here as I see Mark McKenzie being talked about a decent amount.  I coached him for two years when he was u12-u13 right before he went to the Union Academy.  Obviously it was a no brainer him moving onto the Academy, but it certainly hurt our team!  Great kid, hard worker, and a really good leader.  To be honest, I didn't think he would ever get to where he is.  Pretty cool though, hoping he makes the World Cup team (I'm most certainly going if so).

that's awesome.

are there any specific things you think he might have learned from you? (I TAUGHT HIM EVERYTHING HE KNOWS!) would be amazing to watch him playing and realize- wow, that's something we worked on every week that he did just there.

this is fabulous!  You lurkers need to post more :)

Did he have to try out for the academy or was he selected based on his play for your U12 team?

U.S. Soccer announced that the USMNT will host Chile on March 26 at the Houston Dynamo's BBVA Compass Stadium. Chile is the 13th ranked team in the world, while the USMNT are 25th. Like the US, Chile surprisingly failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

“We’re thrilled to have an opponent of Chile’s caliber as we continue to build our team towards the Gold Cup,” head coach Gregg Berhalter said in a statement.  "Houston fans have shown fantastic support for the National Team, so we think BBVA Compass Stadium is an ideal venue to compete in.”

I wish I could say I taught him everything he knows - my emphasis with him was always making his feet better because his athleticm was off the charts.

Couple funny stories.  Players on my team told me this kid was on their ODP team (we are from Delaware) so by the time they’re 12 you basically know anyone who’s half good.  So I go out to watch him play, he was playing on a YMCA team up two years.  Watch an entire half and I go over to a parent who was there and I said he’s pretty good pointing to number 9.  They said umm he’s not 9 he’s number 12.  So that was funny, watched the wrong kid for an entire half!

Anyway he came to my team at u13 and left at the end of his u14 year (before birth year came into play).  Not surprisingly I played him at forward 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

In all seriousness, he did play forward and then he went back to holding mid in big games when we had the lead.  One game against a very good Penn Fusion team (with multiple future D1 guys) we went up late and he took it upon himself to go back into holding mid.  I always thought he would probably be some sort of a defender - I actually thought outside back would be his calling card because his parents aren’t that tall and I didn’t think he would get the height to play CB.

In regards to the Academy this was right when the Philadelphia Union were ramping up and things were relatively new.  At his u14 year he played on an EDP Select team (EDP is a local league) that played in the Dallas Cup and that’s really how he started to get some looks.  He would train with the Philadelphia Union once a week and our team twice a week.  The writing was on the wall he was going to go.  He was such a great kid he knew he was letting his team down by leaving (he easily was worth 2 goals a game).  I met him and his parents out for coffee when they told me he was going to the Union full time.  I also coach at a local powerhouse high school and he told me he was going there either so it was a double dagger haha.

In the end it was for the best and that’s what us coaches are in it for - what’s in the best of the individual player.

We still keep in touch every few weeks/months depending on how things are going with him.  I went to lunch with him a few months ago and got to catch-up since we haven’t talked much since college.  He said he ran a 4.31 40 yard dash at Wake last year which is incredible.

He is a really good kid that’s what I’m most proud of - he’s obviously very good at soccer but he’s a better person.

Miazga got a loan to Reading.  Not great, but not terrible under the circumstances.  They are near the  relegation zone in the Championship table, and just engaged a new manager in December. They've taken on at least 3 loans this window now, including Chelsea's Lewis Baker who couldn't crack the lineup at Leeds during the first half of the season so was recalled and moved.  That could all be good or bad for Miazga.  It seems likely he'll get opportunities, with a good level of competition, but is joining a team that is in flux.

Just what the doctor ordered!  Looks like multiple people are reporting this

Regarding the USMNT -- I'm hearing that 20-year-old Djordje Mihailovic (Chicago Fire) has REALLY impressed during camp. Talented midfielder has been a U.S. Youth International.

I always kind of liked Boyd but the injuries really derailed his career

=============================

United States international and SV Darmstadt 98 forward Terrence Boyd is in discussions to move to MLS, with Toronto FC showing interest, multiple league sources have told ESPN FC.

One source characterized Toronto's interest as "exploratory," though TFC is in the market for a forward after Tosaint Ricketts' option was declined.

Berhalter's plan for his U.S. team: balance, structure and learning how to 'disorganize' opponents

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- From the moment Gregg Berhalter was hired as manager of the U.S. men's national team, the questions about style began. After all, his tenure with the Columbus Crew revealed a team that prized possession and regularly ranked in the top third in the league in terms of chances created.

There has also long been a craving for the U.S. to not only win but win well, even in the face of a player development system that doesn't regularly crank out the kind of players who lend themselves to an expansive approach. That feeling has only intensified in the wake of the World Cup qualifying failure, and will be there when the U.S. faces Panama on Sunday in Glendale, Arizona. But the question remains: Will the style Berhalter implemented in Columbus simply be transplanted to the U.S., or would some tweaks be made?

As Berhalter sat in the lobby of the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, with the afternoon sun shining through, he made it clear that the latter approach would be taken.

"I think the philosophy will be very similar. We want to use the ball to disorganize the opponent and create goal-scoring opportunities," he said. "But we have to make some adjustments from what we did in Columbus.

"There needs to be more balance to the game. Now we're working on how do we get that balance, but still be able to disorganize the opponent. It's still based on positioning, it's still based on spacing, it's still based on the principles of the game. When we're coming up with this game model, a lot of principles are the same but the formation will be different."

Berhalter's reasoning is two-fold. Not only does he have a different set of players at his disposal, but this is a national team that, by its nature, has a limited player pool. That point was driven home when the name of Columbus playmaker Federico Higuain was brought up. There is simply no one like him available to Berhalter here, a point he not only agreed with but expanded upon. He added that in the Columbus midfield he also had Artur, "who could make up for people's mistakes alone."

The second factor driving Berhalter's thinking is what he views as the nature of the international game. Since he officially took over back in December, much attention has been paid to his meetings with U.S. players and their clubs. But Berhalter also spent time talking with other international coaches. Those discussions reinforced his belief that he needed to alter the model he had in Columbus.

"I think league soccer is different than international soccer," he said. "When you look at the World Cups and you look at how teams played, it's a game of who can make the least amount of mistakes. It changes a little bit. So we want to build a team that is proactive and is looking to break down the opponent, but also has good structure to it. If there is a breakdown, we can recover from it."

Berhalter breaks the game down into 10 areas. On the attacking side, there is buildup from the goalkeeper, buildup from midfield, attacking in transition and finishing attacks. On the defensive side there is high pressing, middle-block pressing, low-block defending and defensive transition. Then there are attacking and defending set pieces. He's touched on five of them so far, with more to come when the team reconvenes in March for a pair of friendlies.

Yet Berhalter's comments hint strongly at an approach that is more conservative than what he put forward in Columbus. Fans will get to see the outside-backs join the attack, but the full-back on the weak side may slide centrally to offer a bit more midfield support if the ball turns over. Defensively, the U.S. will look to set traps to funnel the ball into certain pockets and then pounce, though there may be moments when a high-press is called for.

For Seattle Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan, patience is the byword when it comes to the attack.

"In Seattle, it's a little bit more free-flowing and if a guy ends up on the other side of the field, so be it. The other guy will cover," he said. "Here, you pretty much stay in your designated spot and be patient and wait for the ball. You have to trust your teammates that the ball is going to get there.

"The important thing for me is you rely on your teammates. I think here you have to pick your moments, to really go deep. We have to be patient and be in our spots offensively and defensively."

Tim Weah is starting today against Hamilton Academical, one of my favorite club names in all of soccer.

With the team at a lower popularity level than I can ever remember, US Soccer really needs to rethink where they are playing these games and the pricing of the tickets

I’m told that just over 6,000 tix have been sold for #USAvPAN. #usmnt

Sargent gets another sub appearance.  He now already has more Bundesliga games than DMB and is tied with Julian Green.  This is already his 5th game which was the total amount his coach said to expect for the entire season.

When you roll out a team of nobodys, you kind of get what you deserve.

Even from just his first appearance it is clear that as long as Adams keeps his energy level high, his simple game translates to a top league.  He covers so much ground it gives me a bit of goosebumps if he and Weston can finally be planted in the middle of the US midfield for the next decade.

Between Adams and Davies, this is a good day for those of us who believe this is the future model we want to see happen more times than not:

* Young teen joins MLS academy

* Teen promoted to MLS first team and cracks starting lineup

* After two seasons of increasing playing time in MLS, get theyself to Europe before 20

* Start getting playing time ASAP in a top league

Here is a group of random tweets about Adams in his debut from media and fans alike.

This is better than a bowl of beef stew on a freezing cold day :)

=============

- Tyler Adams has been excellent so far, he's all over the place. Love what he is bringing to this Leipzig team.

- RB Leipzig fans getting a quick taste of what Tyler Adams brings to the table. His work rate is Herculean, and his two-way work has helped Leipzig set the tone

- Tyler Adams enthusiastic on his Leipzig debut, to say the least. Playing box-to-box in a double pivot. Don't call it the Naby Keita role

- Tyler Adams 100% looks like he belongs on a @RBLeipzig_EN team which is loaded with talent. Seems like biggest hurdle is just getting comfortable with teammates.

- I know it's just 1 game but we do have a 33% sell-on fee for Tyler Adams you know...

- Tyler Adams is a teenager who walked into the Bundesliga and had no problem with the pace or movement of the league on day 1. His ability to think quickly and understand what’s going on around him is so impressive.

- Tyler Adams is an absolute stud. Will be in EPL by 2020. This pool of CM’s just gets better and better every month.

- RB Leipzig are currently on pace to score 7,395 goals with Tyler Adams in the lineup

- So much fun watching Tyler Adams already playing up to the Bundesliga standard. Not that it's a surprise, but he hasn't put a foot wrong. Same as he's done at every step of his young career.

- BT Sport commentators are throwing heaps of praise for Tyler Adams right now
