US Men's National Team (14 Viewers)

I have mentioned before how soccer is lagging in producing players from Florida.  So today's news from Inter Miami is very welcomed.

========================

Another pressing order of business is the summer launch of the youth academy, which will be a fully funded program for 160 hand-selected players — U12 through U19 boys’ teams with 20 players per squad.

Former Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas star Javier “El Maestro” Morales, a native of Argentina, will be named an Inter Miami Academy coach in the next few days.

Meanwhile, McDonough, technical director Kurt Schmid (son of recently deceased MLS coach Sigi Schmid), and director of soccer operations Niki Budalic have been scouring local fields in search of talent.

“Our academy is going to be all South Florida kids,” McDonough said. “We are not going to import kids to take spots from the local kids. I have been out at Kendall, Weston, Lauderhill and other places, and there is so much talent down here, it’s crazy. It’s one of the deeper areas of the country.

“It’s just finding all the right pieces and putting those kids in the right environment. Some kids are super talented, but haven’t played in a structure like ours. The jump will be big, but we want to give that opportunity to those kids. Nobody will be excluded based on money. We will pay for everything.”
you guys have probably seen the haunting images of what poor Lockhart Stadium has turned into after it was abandoned.   Is that a shrubbery?

Inter Miami just sent a detailed proposal to Ft Lauderdale to take over the Lockhart Stadium site and turn into their training facility.

So lets summarize our lineage for the younger guys:

Steffen -> Howard

Weston -> Germany Jones

Adams -> Bradley

Amon -> Jones

Sargent -> Jozy/McBride

GapingHoleAtLB -> GapingHoleAtLB (come on Georgie Boy!)

We have no current comp for Reyna but we may not need one.

We have no current comp for Dempsey but I think we do need one, else Pulisic is going to get kicked off the park every game.  I thought the US reached its peak when teams had to worry about both Donovan and Dempsey.

I don't know how to map Weah as I am unsure what his final position will be.
I still think Weah makes an impact this cycle...he has a unique skillset that the rest of these kids (sans Pulisic) don't have.

He is no better or worse than anyone not named Sargent at this point who is 26 or under (which is why I think we need to hope Weah turns into a striker) but Wood is not getting many minutes right now and he could see his playing time drop dramatically at the national team level.

I am guessing he will be called up for the March friendlies and then Berhalter can have a much closer look.  I think the Gold Cup roster will likely tell us quite a bit about the direction the cycle is going to take.

Pulisic will be expected to live up to the production of Donovan, and he’s already better at the club level than Donovan ever was. McKennie will be expected to match or surpass the career of Michael Bradley, and he’s already reached a similar status at club level. Sargent will be a bitter disappointment if he ends up matching the career of McBride or Altidore. To be considered someone who lived up to his potential, Sargent will need to be the best striker to ever play for the United States.
Really?  Is Dempsey not considered a striker then?  I'd love it if Sargent became another Dempsey personally.
more of a bruce murray.

I've kept a rough spreadsheet tracking guys, but with all the new faces added to the Jan camp I figured I'd refresh it and share with the group.  Its open to edit if you want to contribute or fix anything I have wrong.  The age cols have array formulas, so be careful sorting (formulas need to be in row 2).

I love this stuff.

A couple of ideas that may or may not be worth considering:

1 column for total senior caps

1 column for senior caps since 2018 (start of 2022 WC cycle)

which reyna- gio or claudio?

I agree with this- even though he's still the most raw and inconsistent of those young guys and not ready-for-primetime yet, he has a ton of innate ability and upside that will hopefully continue to shine as he hones his game. I'm really interested in seeing what happens over the next few months in scotland.

I really can't figure him out. as andy says, he's struggling for pt. and he's frustrating for the US when I've seen him lately- just not gelling with what's going on around him with his runs or combination play. but then he'll get a ball in the box, turn and shoot out of nothing and get the goal- which is obviously huge. and I've seen him make the fantastic diagonal runs that Jozy seems to loathe.

speaking of- I do think Jozy will play a big role this cycle if healthy. also frustrating in a lukaku way of being silky smooth one minute/game and then zardozing the joint up the next. and for a big man, he plays not so big- ceding space and air balls way too much. but in a flowing attack, making shorter channel runs, with him not isolated and with runners in support and to play off of- he's a beast. and his strike-rate really speaks for itself. not sure all those qualifying clauses work in berhalter's system given zardoz seemingly isolated a lot.

but if we're talking claudio... maybe carleton for the early, more attacking part of his career.
A year ago I thought Carleton would have made a nice continuation of the gunslinger "try ####" persona that Wynalda, Mathis and Dempsey had but until he gets his career started, I can't map him.

I think he'll have a say in the current cycle.
I love what I have seen of him but have no idea how he turns out.  By the end of the cycle he will be 19 so he certainly could.

The next youngin I am watching closely is Alex Mendez.  If he can break through to the first team come this fall, it would be another success story.

isn't he more withdrawn than those guys though? maybe a dempsey- more of a true #10? or is that just what I want him to be (after his u-whatever stints) since we don't get to see him while he rots on the bench at ATL.

we could us a benny/stache yute coming up.

and doesn't pick the bad guys.

This does not sound good :(

Andrew Gutman has walked out on Celtic, sources have told Football FanCast.

The 22-year-old American played as a trialist against St Mirren and Arbroath, and was expected in training last week, but hasn’t been seen since the 4-3 defeat to the latter club.

Gutman is a free agent after impressing with Indiana University and being offered a pro contract by Chicago Fire.

Initially he trained with Rangers at the Hummel Training Centre and although he was offered terms, he decided to take up an offer from Celtic.

After training for a week he played for 45 minutes in a friendly against St Mirren while an application was made for a work permit.

Following a further week of training with the reserve squad he was listed as a trialist for a friendly against Arbroath. After that match, which Celtic lost 4-3, he hasn’t been seen at the club’s Lennoxtown Training Centre.

I was talking more personality than position, but even then, at his age Wynalda was a wide midfielder and Dempsey was a box to box maniac.

A nice calm player on the ball like Benny\Stache would be nice.  Mendez has some of these traits.

Looks like I will have to find some reddit streams for these games unless Univision gets the Spanish rights

Ian Thomas‏ @byIanThomas

With @FloSports picking up the exclu. rights to the Concacaf Nations League through '22, that competition will solely be available/broadcast in the U.S. in English on the FloFC platform. Concacaf told me the U.S. Spanish language rightsholder is being finalized now
or maybe not!

MIAMI — CONCACAF has reached an agreement with the streaming service FloSports to be its U.S. broadcast partner for the new CONCACAF Nations League. Group stage games involving the American national team are not included in the deal.

CONCACAF general secretary Philippe Moggio said Monday the U.S. matches will remain on ESPN and Fox. Those networks own the rights to U.S. matches under their contracts with the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Added the columns and most of the total caps.  Will work on the caps for this WC cycle - I haven't found a good source for it, so I'll need to mash the rosters together to get the counts.

Also added an FFA Depth column - figure we can add a consensus for the top players.  Might be fun when we get past the CP, Adams, etc.

ETA: explaining the conditional formatting (shading will automatically pop up based on the criteria):

Nat Team: If not tagged as a Sr. member but has at least 1 cap - indicates a tweener that hasn't fully moved to the Sr side (McKenzie/Trusty might end up being prime examples).

WC 2022 Age: Heatmap based on the average age for the player pool.  No shading means they're the youngest; deepest red means they're the oldest.

Dual Nat: If they're a dual national that hasn't been locked up, their other country will be shaded yellow.

Cur WC Cycle Caps: If both cap columns equal 1, then this was the first time we've seen them called up.  This column will be shaded green to show they're the n00b.

I think our "full" U20 team is better than the Camp Cupcake team.  The front 6 are scary here....

Speaking of Real...

Bethlehem Steel is apparently making a move to sign a LB.  This could free up Real to get some minutes with the Union, which they sorely need IMO.

this is a weird one. hopefully it'll be something innocuous- like he was hit by a bus and couldn't make it to any team events because he's lying in a ditch somewhere. not just bailing without telling anybody.

Miazga gets the start against Bolton today in his first game for Reading.
Looks like he played 90, which is pretty impressive.  Reading nearly took all three points at Bolton in a huge game for them - Reading being 3rd from bottom and Bolton second.

I sure hope Miazga didn't have any fault on the late equalizer:

90'+2' Goal! Bolton Wanderers 1, Reading 1. Jack Hobbs (Bolton Wanderers) header from the centre of the box to the top left corner. Assisted by Sammy Ameobi with a cross.

someone was reading the RBL forums looking for opinions on Adams.

One of the comments he found translated as "the poison dwarf looked like he had been in the system for years."

Poison dwarf is so perfect :)

Antonee Robinson has returned to training for Wigan. He’s been sidelined for the last 11 weeks with an ankle injury. Good news

Brooke Tunstall‏ @YesThatBrooke

For those of you who are fans of the #USYNT and follow top U.S. prospects, defender @julian__araujo, one of the youngest players on the U20 team in @CONCACAF Qualifying, has signed w/ @Nike, which means @NCAASoccer - he had verbally committed to @UCSBMensSoccer - ain't happening.

Araujo joined the @LAGalaxyAcademy academy in August and is currently in preseason w/ the @LAGalaxy so that's one obvious pro destination. But Araujo has a *lot* of interest from teams in Europe and Mexico so he won't come to #LAG cheap. Doesn't turn 18 till August.

It is surprising to see a camp cupcake game on big boy Fox even after college football is over.   I hope the team can play well since that means a few more eye balls than normal.

Bayern Munich have signed RSL academy product Taylor Booth.  It is being reported that Booth has acquired a Euro passport and can join Bayern's youth team before he turns 18.

and so the plundering begins continues....
for sure.

but this has the feel of floodgates opening into a full-on, arrrrrrr, avast mateys kind of plundering, and not the isolated here and there type that's been going on.

Can somebody briefly explain how this is allowed to happen?
*MLS has limited roster space and as we know, difficult salary cap rules.

*Teams have to take a risk of signing players to home grown contracts who are not yet ready for first team minutes.

*Young players sometimes resist signing these contracts because their agents are telling them it would restrict their ability to move (the theory being German teams are more than happy to grab young American's for no fee)

Fontana scored for Union yesterday in their first preseason game to beat NYRB 3-2.

Aaronson also got minutes, but I don't know how he did.

I don't know what is going on in Scotland.  After yesterday's reports of Gutman going AWOL at Celtic, today it was announced that Celtic have signed both Gutman and Perez to 3.5 year deals and that both players will be loaned back to the US (did not say which league or team)

Manny said: “It is a huge honour to sign with Celtic FC, one of the biggest clubs in football. From my time visiting Glasgow, it was clear to see the scale, the spirit and the professionalism of the club.

"I am happy to be a part of Celtic and during this next period I will be working hard at my loan club in the USA to continue my development. I look forward to joining up with Celtic in the near future."

Andrew said: “When I realised Celtic FC wanted to sign me permanently, I was really honoured. I know Celtic is a huge name in football, they have tremendous supporters and it is a club where I believe I can flourish as a player.

"For the immediate period I will be focusing on my loan in America where I look forward to playing as many matches as I can. After that, I can’t wait to join Celtic and be part of such a storied institution.”
