US Men's National Team (11 Viewers)

* I am sure every one has seen this already but just in case.  :(

https://streamable.com/vjya2

* On a more positive note, Jozy is on a hot streak.  5 goals and 2 assist in his last 4 games.  A really nice brace yesterday

https://streamable.com/7wk4g

https://streamable.com/gq02k

* I read a story yesterday which speculated that Man City will loan Steffen in Bristol City this summer when he completes his transfer

* Jesus Ferreria had his best game as a pro for Dallas and was named Man of the Match.  Pomykal also had another strong game

* It was ironic that the big talking point this week was Durkin's lack of playing time at DC coupled with the news that DC turned down a transfer over the winter for Durkin to Leverkusen.   And then after all the hub bub, Durkin gets his first start of the season and his first MLS goal.

Just scored my tickets to the Gold Cup game here in KC on June 26th. If any of you guys are in town I'll have a cooler of beer in the parking lot tailgating before the game.

Yes this is one part hey look at me (my son), but also a look into what the Union is doing from the academy perspective.  I believe they got this right and will start to really produce more Brendon Aaaronson type players as this thing matures.

Union started a pre-academy a couple of years and were scouting my youngest son (I know I posted about it before), but at the time I decided it wasn't right for him.  His coach was putting a ridiculous amount pressure on him to take over games  :rolleyes:  - he went from this free flowing confident little bugger to hiding in his shell at just 8yrs old.  With the Union coming in to see him, they bumped him up 2 age groups during training to get him ready.  I saw the stress building on him, so I told Union no thanks and eventually pulled him out of the club that Spring.

Fast forward 2 years at our current club and he's back to his confident self.  He's got a ridiculous motor and for 10yrs old his soccer IQ is really high (coach's words, not mine); he loves playing anywhere centrally in the 10/8/6 type roles.  His coach pulled me aside last week and told me that my son has been invited by the Union scouting department to come for some training sessions.  I'm very excited and proud of him - he loves this game so much its become contagious in our house (aside from constantly being hunted for megs in the house  :hot:  )

From the documentation I got:

The Philadelphia Union Academy Scouting Department will look to host Regional Talent ID Centers periodically in strategic areas, in an effort to enhance club relationships in the community and strengthen scouting efforts in our catchment area. The Regional Training Centers will be free-of-cost for the players involved. Will be held throughout the year for identified players in the area aged U9, U10, U11, and U12.

Philosophy is similar to Training Centers hosted by US Soccer for clubs at the older ages (U14/U15). The goal for these centers is to create a “Club and Country” model, with the aim of identifying top players in the Zone 1 age group (U8 – U12) to invite in to train periodically with the Philadelphia Union Pre-Academy.

- Sessions are “club neutral” and available for players from any youth club
- Player pool is created through scouting efforts as well as Director of Coaching recommendations
- All invitations are first communicated and approved by Player’s Club
- At least two members of Philadelphia Union Full-Time Academy/Pre-Academy Staff will be present. Other staffing will be added with selected Coaches from market

Europe, here we come

"[Pomykal] also confirmed that he’s out of contract with the club after the 2019 season, meaning he could potentially leave the club for free next January

Dallas here we come! :(

Turns out this was wrong.  Dallas still holds a 2 year option on him after this season.

Ulysses Llanez made his debut today for Wolfsburg U19 team.  They won 4-1.

Llanez had 2 goals and an assist in the game in front of four Mexican scouts who had flown his family in and then taken them all to the Maldives afterward to discuss what size El tri shirt he'll wear.

Thought this was interesting.  MLS is going to start participating in FIFA solidarity and training compensation payments.  At least they’d theoretically get something for academy kids who sign elsewhere and earn transfer fee

http://www.espn.com/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/3829402/mls-clubs-to-receive-solidarity-payments-after-league-agrees-to-follow-fifa-rule?src=com
there is a little discussion on this in the soccer thread.

even though the MLS Players Union hates this, I think over all it will be a positive for most.

I think it's a step in the right direction, but didn't US Soccer say it was ONLY for MLS academies and not non-MLS academies - so if there was another situation like Yedlin or Dempsey, their youth clubs would still not receive those payments

 This question/answer below addresses the issue.  It seems like MLS is not going to either participate nor block a youth club from getting a payment.  But it sounds like it will be up to the youth club to figure it out.

I may be reading it wrong though

===================

Will MLS make Solidarity Payments to U.S. or Canadian amateur youth clubs if an MLS player is transferred out of MLS?

Under the FIFA Regulations, it is incumbent on the club receiving the player (paying the transfer fee) to remit Solidarity Payments pro rata to each eligible club. MLS Clubs will only claim the portion due specifically to its own academy or academies. If a non-MLS academy youth club has a rightful claim to a portion of the Solidarity Payment, the MLS Club will only seek its own percentage of the payment. MLS Clubs will NOT receive the full Solidarity Payment to further distribute among non-MLS academy youth clubs.

Good words here from Pepi.  A strong U17 performance should help strengthen the bonds

==========

Pepi, meanwhile, is already getting excited for the trip to Brazil this summer, as he has mostly decided that his future is with the U.S. team.

"I've never been" to Brazil, he said. "I'm looking forward to going and fighting for my country. ... The U.S. gave me better opportunities. I played U16s with both, the U.S. brought me up to the U17s. They showed more interest in me and my development."

This was how I read it.

17 year old Julian Araujo is continuing to make excellent progress.

Last night he got his first pro start for the Galaxy and went all 90 minutes in the 2-1 win.

He is expected to be the youngest player on the US U20 team in the WC this summer.

Weston is back in the starting lineup today.  Now we just need Pulisic and Adams to get back.

There is a chance Pulisic will be available as a sub tomorrow morning.

Seattle won the GA Cup U17 tournament today.  Along the way they beat Flamengo, River Plate, West Ham, and Valencia.  Incredible performance.

Pulisic did make the bench today.

Hopefully Adams comes back next week.

I am bracing myself that we are going to see Zardes getting lots of minutes in the Gold Cup, especially if Jozy's injury is serious

Fortuna Sittard’s American forward Andrija Novakovich left today’s game injured with an apparent thigh injury

Adams looks almost assured of group stage Champions League action next season.

RBL are in 3rd and have a 10 point lead over 5th place, with only 4 games to go.

Sands >>>>Durkin today.  Best game by Sands on the year and he’s been playing well.

As an aside bringing in the undervalued top player (Heber and Mitrita) from 3rd tier Euro leagues may also be a valid DP strategy especially for teams owned by Euros with scouting over there.

we are going to have our own issues with this, but seeing this has US ties, I thought this was worth mentioning

Monterrey refuses to release Jonathan Gonzalez to Mexico for the U-20 World Cup. Gonzalez & FMF not happy about it

U17 WCQing Roster is out.

Reyna, Pepi, Leyva, Ocampo-Chavez, Busio, and Scally all made it.

Bello not on roster due to injury.

Layva and Ocampo-Chavez were part of the Sounders team that just won the GA tournament beating a handful of big name teams along the way (see my previous post).

The U17 qualifying format is kind of weird since there was another tournament that also is placing teams in the knock out round for Concacaf.  Here is some info

================================================

Under the current format, there are four groups of four with the top three teams from each group advancing to the Round of 16.

In a previous tournament, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic already advanced the Round of 16.

Starting in the Round of 16, the teams that advance to the semifinals will qualify for the U-17 World Cup.

U.S. TEAM’S SCHEDULE

The US team was drawn into Group F and will open the tournament against Canada on Thursday, May 2 at 6 p.m. ET. The U.S. then faces Barbados on Saturday, May 4 at 4 p.m. ET before finishing group play against Guatemala on Monday, May 6 at 6 p.m. ET.

Should the U.S. team win its group, it will face Guadeloupe on May 9 in the Round of 16.

If Miazga gets transferred permanently to Reading, it would be fine with me.

===============================

Football Wonderkidz‏ @FootWonderkidz

Reading before Matt Miazga: 28 games, 23 points

Reading after Matt Miazga:  16 games, 23 points

Miazga had another big performance today vs. West Brom to all but ensure @ReadingFC survival in the Championship!

Pulsiic on bench and Weston starting in the derby today.  If Pulisic plays and Dortmund wins, Pulisic will break Julian Drax's record as the youngest player in Bundesliga history with 50 wins in games he has played.

Sargent on bench.  Weah sadly not even in the 18 for Celtic as this loan continues to get worse for him.

Weah has stated he wants to play in the U20 WC.  Celtic has their Cup final after the U20 WC starts so hopefully they will release (especially seeing of how little importance the new coach has exhibited in him).
