Roldan has groin surgery, out 4-6 weeks. On the bubble as it is, have to think it will be hard to come back fit in time.

Tough news for the Sounders. Cristian Roldan underwent groin surgery in LA this morning. Recovery time is 4-6 weeks. More to come…

Sucks for him. I'd never have wanted to see him on the field in the WC, because it would have meant somebody else being injured. but his play this season has been excellent and so consistent...he deserved a trip to to Qatar and would have been solid just in case support there.

Sargent, Ream and Jedi all did not dress today for their Cup game which likely indicates their importance to the team.

Fulham looks like they are going to lose as well to lowly Crowley. Although this is clearly a "focus on the league" decision. Their start may give them hope to stay up this year.

This is good news. This is the next logical step and evolution of the academy system.

BIG changes to MLS homegrown territory rules.

Homegrown rights on every player in territory is gone
Teams have protected player lists at the academy level
Set compensation for non-protected academy players who leave.

This is obviously great in general for players, except for maybe the 9 non-academy guys that get protected.

Trying to figure out which clubs will benefit the most from this change. I would think the more ambitious academies can point to strong track records to attract out of territory players. But I also think that talent rich environments like Dallas could get hurt by this too

Will this do anything to help discover the kids that can’t afford pay to play to be discovered by the academies?

I would love to see a large investment by clubs in underserved areas. That would pay big dividends for everyone.

US eligible Fossey did play 90 for Fulham though. And Tomkinson went 90 for Norwich

it helps much more than it hurts think. Think of Boston (or any cold weather city). We are a talent thin area. LA has MASSIVE amounts of talent, way more than only two MLS teams could ever support in the hopes of finding the diamond, Now a whole bunch of those players can go to the cold weather cities (Minnesota, Boston etc) where local talent is not heavy and they can be important players immediately.

Now whether individual MLS teams have the $ needed to scout at this level, I have no idea, but the ones that do are going to have better talent than they are used to seeing. The LA's and Dallas can still cherry pick the best of their regions but the next level kid (who maybe hasn't had his growth spurt yet, or is just a year away from popping) now can have a chance else where.

I really like it.

I don't think this changes that dynamic. Ned has the most knowledge of how an academy works. I personally don't know how MLS academies identify players but I would guess many teams simply look at the best club players and that is where your $ issue pops in since not every kid can be a part of the club system due to the cost.

I have a feeling in areas like LA though, they may have different ways of finding the latino kids that can't afford to play at the fancy clubs.

Brand new "who gets on the plane" just released. This one has a focus on the current, and unexpected, competition at the striker position with Pefok, Haji, Sargent and Vasquez all hoping to get called along with Jesus. I only expect 2 of the former 4 to be called.

Big game for Sands and Tillman today. Both starting in a game that will see them out of Champions League or advancing into the group stage. First leg was a 2-2 draw.

Tillman seems to be clearly the player to benefit the most from Weah's injury as he will likely get called for the September friendlies after his good start this year.

Matthew Doyle@MattDoyle76
James Sands MotM and Malik Tillman creates the goal as Rangers get back to the Champions League group stage for the first time in a decade.
Quick glance at Twitter suggests this isn't Doyle blowing smoke up a former MLSer either -- Sands getting lots and lots of love from Rangers fans.

US youth international midfielder Paulo Rudisill is on trial at Dutch club Feyenoord, per sources. Rudisill, 16, is a star in the LA Galaxy academy, winning MLS Next U15 Golden Ball. Feyenoord CEO Dennis te Kloese is previous GM of Galaxy. Highly-rated talent.

Agreed, and honestly I think too much focus is going into "figuring out" the nine. The reality is that none of these guys are marginally better or worse than the others. So pick a Ferreira replacement and a change of pace, goal poacher type and call it a day. Due to their current form and familiarity with the system I'd go for Sargent + Pefok, and think it's just a little too late for Vasquez/Wright/etc. I'd rather chemistry be the focus at this point.

Much more concerning is who's playing goal, who's backing up Dest/Jedi and are we seriously going to see Aaron Long not only grab a roster spot but get any type of playing time over much more qualified options (CCV/Sands/Ream etc)?

Totally agree. IMO, if Sargent is in any sort of goal scoring form, you need to bring him. He just brings so much outside of the goal scoring (hold up play, pressing ,etc) that Greg wants in his system.

Jesus is going if he's healthy. We all know that at this point. And although he blew too many easy goal scoring chances for my liking, I get it. Its not like we have many better options.

Hard to tell whether this is just a hot streak for Pefok or whether a light has come on. Obviously he scored plenty in Switzerland, but Germany is a different animal. Again...if he's scoring and shows the consistent work rate you want to see, he's probably on the plane.

Dike's injuries and poor performance at the Gold Cup DQ him. I see no chance that Pepi bounces back to form in time playing for that team. Nobody else in the pool gives me any sort of confidence (too late for Vazquez. I dont think Wright is on this level)

Still REALLY wish they would try Weah as the 9 to try and get him, CP and Lil' Brendan on the field at the same time (with Weston and healthy Gio as the 8's.....tough break for Musah, but he's just 3rd best if everyone is available). But I just dont think Greg will do it.

Unfortunately you're right, don't see him messing around with the formation too much at this point. And I'll cut him a little slack as the youth and unavailability due to injuries has hampered the opportunities to try. That being said hopefully we see a few small tweaks that get our best players into positions that capitalize on their strengths and comfortability.

Next cycle needs to have emphasis on scrapping Gregg's "system" and creating a style of play around our core and what they do best.

World Cup roster release on November 9th:

Henry Bushnell

@HenryBushnell

The USMNT World Cup roster will be released on Nov. 9. US Soccer VP of marketing Kay Bradley said at board meeting that there'll be an event in NYC at which Berhalter will announce the 26-man squad. Team spokesman confirms that that will be the grand reveal.

GGG has a task in front of him that no other US coach has ever faced (and every one would have wanted)

Pulisic, Aaronson, Weah, Reyna, Musah

Two of these players will likely not start any specific game.

I don't ever remember a time in our history where all 5 of those players would not be automatic starters. I hope GGG is up to the task of making the right choices here....

I could talk about the striker group all day.

I am going to remove Haji from the group I talked about earlier, and leave it with the following 4 players GGG will choose from.

Sargent, Pefok, Vasquez, and Jesus. Let break them down:

Work Rate:

Sargent comes out WAY on top here. He has the instincts and work rate of a DM. None of the other 3 can come close. Pefok showed signs of being a real dog in this area but every one says his work rate has improved significantly in Germany so I am going to say the other 3 are pretty equal. Jesus may actually have the lowest work rate if Pefok did improve as much as people say

Top Speed:

He is a low energy player but Jesus has shown that when he has to sprint, he is really fast. I would rate him the top here. Vasquez and Sargent are both plodders.

Aerial ability:

Jesus is by far and away on the bottom. He won't give the US anything in the air. The other 3 are all very strong in the air.

False Nine Ability:

The exact opposite of aerial ability. Jesus is the only one who looks like he has the skill set and mobility to do this although I would argue we only want a false 9 if no other real 9 emerges.

Nose for goal:

This has been Sargent's big problem. If he can show a consistent scoring touch, I think all 4 players could be on equal footing here.

Ability to combine with other players:

Vasquez surprisingly shines here. He does not have the general look of having this skill set but he really finds his team mates well and his feet are excellent for his size. Pefok is clearly the worst of the group in this category as both Sargent and Jesus do this well.

I'd still find a way to get four players from the five you listed in your first post on the field, and keep the four players you listed in your second post on the bench as much as possible.

On the Nov. 9 reveal date: - final deadline is Nov. 14 - Many of the 26 players will have games a few days after the reveal, on the weekend of Nov. 12. In case of injury, can be replaced. - Reveal is 12 days before the USMNT's World Cup opener — shorter timeline than usual

This is one that's near and dear to me.

Now that the shackles are off, I'm willing to bet academies are going to start tapping the underserved areas. Right now, they're expanding their networks to existing clubs that participate in MLS Next, ECNL, and EDP. Unfortunately those are all pay to play clubs, but I know at least with our club we have a $70k scholarship budget. We worked hard over the years to get this implemented and was one of the biggest things I focused on while I was president.

I think we all agree on that.

But to date GGG has not given even the slightest hint he is willing to try. We will know shortly. Nothing (outside of injuries) is likely to change his mind after these coming friendlies so if we are to see anything different, it will be in these two friendlies.

Tillman and Sands will have their hands full in the UCL group stage but no better way to show to GGG that they deserve to be on roster than to play well against Ajax, Liverpool and Napoli.

Love this idea, but I don't know that Gio is a better 8 than Musah. Maybe if he rounds into form, but Musah is playing well for Valencia (2 starts, 2 wins, 0 goals allowed). And I think that he and Weston pair well together. Gio needs to prove his worth to me (again).

Pretend you time traveled from 1996 and knew nothing of the current team, but had seen Reyna play extensively. The idea that Reyna might not start would be literally incomprehensible. Yet, here we are.

Call me PEFOK

@Theosonsmith

Siebatcheu ? Pefok ? My name is Theoson-Jordan Siebatcheu ! My friends call me Jordy and my best friend is my mum that’s why I play with PEFOK ( or Jordan because she gave me this name and I couldn’t put PEFOK ). It’s easier to say PEFOK than Siebatcheu so now it’s up to you

Gio can do things that no other player on the team can do (and probably no other player in US history could do). We just need to hope he can stay healthy and if he does I am convinced he will find plenty of minutes between the 8 and the wing. Outside of maybe Jedi, and Zimm, I bet we don't see any field player going 270 minutes in the group stage. There are going to be plenty of minutes to go around in the Qatari heat.

With Adams looking like he is back to his old self and maybe even improving, the likelihood of Acosta seeing playing time goes way down and as such we are left with almost no one who can hit a free kick with some power outside of Gio.

That’s also why 3 points vs Wales is crucial. So that you can rotate the squad vs England and keep more people fresh.
