US Men's National Team (17 Viewers)

2 assists for Pefok today. Leading 4-1 on the road. Great start to the season for Union Berlin. 3 wins and a draw so far in the first 4 games.

Sargent is only 22. He showed such good goal scoring form as a youth that it seems a matter of time til he comes good. But playing for sides that are the worst team in the division is not generally a recipe for elite goal scoring numbers. Norwich are a terrible EPL club but a pretty darn good Championship one and that may just give him the platform he has needed.

No idea what made me think to look this up...

Mitrovic, EPL: 68 games for 17g/6a (.34 g+a per game)
Mitrovic, Championship: 105 games for 81g/11a (.88)

Solanke, EPL: 44 games for 3g/2a (.11)
Solanke, Championship: 88 games for 44g/15a (.67)

But pretty cool to see USMNT-eligible strikers currently rank high in their leagues:
It's fantastic.

I keep pointing out that Sargent is doing it at a level closer to MLS than the EPL but we've never had a true top-flight top scorer (Dempsey probably came closest) -- so scoring in the Championship (or Turkey or MLS) still puts him and the others in great company as far as what we've typically had available to us. It's just that the midfield and wings have gotten so much better that we'd like to find a #9 of the same quality.

Unless you count Jozy in Holland. I don't think he lead the league, but there was a two year period where it seem like he was banging in a hat trick or brace every other week.

Holland has that effect at times.

Bradley scored 15 in Holland one season. His second most in his long career is only 5.
Jozy scored 23 in Holland one season. His second most in his long career is 15
Johannson also had his highest total in Holland

Jozy scored 38 league goals over 2 seasons in Holland. He scored 4 goals, combined, across 6 other seasons in Europe.

Dempsey finished T-4th in EPL goal scoring in 2011-12 (behind only Van Persie, Rooney and Kun Aguero) and scored 23 goals in all competitions that year.

That’s still the gold standard for American scoring seasons imo.

He is not only our top RB but also our second best LB. This is a terrible situation given that he does not even dress for games any more. I have no idea how his form will be in Qatar or whether GGG will decide to not use him in place of some one else (Cannon/Yedlin/Scally??) who is playing regularly.

Sergiño Dest wants to fight for his place and unless something surprising happens, he will stay and reassess his case later.

What a **** show. I keep hoping Dest will find a quick loan/transfer somewhere in LaLiga or another top league. The window is rapidly closing. For the record, the window closes on 9/1 this year, not 8/31 as is traditional.

Altético just sold a left back that got plenty of PT last season to Nottingham Forrest...
Although there's probably no way that Dest plays enough defense or does it well enough for Cholo. He'd be in the doghouse nearly immediately unless he is a beast on the training field (not in capabilities, but in effort). Cholo rewards effort and intensity, which is why some players that seem integral to the team get the boot, while others get more playing time that's likely above their abilities. He wants plays that will sacrifice and suffer on the field. Dest doesn't really seem to be that guy.

I still grieve the Miles Robinson thing. I thought he was our best player in 2021 and the drop off from him is arguably as big or bigger than the "next man up" drop off at any other position.
Tim Ream seems to be playing really well for Fulham last season and this season. He doesn't have the same skillset as Robinson, but I think with the right setup, he could be excellent in that role.

I was out at brunch yesterday and a guy walked in wearing a Robinson kit. Made me sad - I haven't heard an update on him but I doubt the miracle recovery for WC was ever really in the cards. Just sucks when you miss one of these with such a small window of career these guys have.

No joke, 24 years later and I still feel for Chris Armas. IIRC he tore his ACL in the last friendly before the WC and never got another shot. If that's right, I was at that game -- so you'd think I'd remember the details better.

Paul Tenorio

@PaulTenorio

#USMNT star Christian Pulisic looks set to remain at Chelsea this season, per source with knowledge of the plans, as ownership rejected any loan moves. Pulisic understood to be disappointed as he was seeking somewhere to play consistently

I'd be pretty nervous about him and Zimm being on the field at the same time. Just from a pure footspeed POV.

I think we all would be nervous but he is facing WC level forwards every week in the EPL so if he can manage for Fulham, I like to think he could perform for the US as well. Having a TON of minutes playing right next to Jedi every day should help him integrate easier too.

And now the ref waved it off for a foul in the buildup - damn.

ETA - this ref sucks. He couldn't have had a better view and basically just changes his mind. I think ultimately it was the right call.

He waived it off initially. What the heck?
Oh, and I didn't know Musah had that in his bag. :pickle:

Go to the 1 minute mark. This is the best view of the Musah called back goal I have seen.

I am not sure you can hit it any cleaner....I thought when I first watched it from the first angle that maybe the keeper was leaning the wrong way but this shot beats probably every keeper in the world on their best day

At first watch it looked like it skipped on the way in, but nope. Looked like it accelerated as it left his foot. Just grazed the post there too. He smoked that ball.

Oblak could have done better but likely wouldn't have stopped it.

great googly boogly

nagbe shcmagbe.

I don't think I've seen any US player hit the ball that well... ever? Harkes goal in england maybe.

[Bogert] Sources: USMNT defender John Brooks has agreed a deal to sign with La Liga club Mallorca as a free agent. @JCTaura first reported. Medical to come tomorrow + finalize paperwork. So almost done.
