US Men's National Team (11 Viewers)

So what, if anything, can we decipher from this? Turner is the starter but we kind of knew that. I'm guessing that's really it, right? Is Jesus getting the #9 meaningful?

I don't think there is much to guess from this that we don't already know so with that said, I think a HIGH amount of the starters are coming from the low numbers, if they are healthy. Whom ever the LCB could be is the only one I think that may start from a higher number than 11 in the first game. Sargent is also a possibility.

I am expecting Jesus to start at least 1 game in the group stage.

If Weston can't go next week, that will open up some possibilities.

New manager incoming for Pepi. He has been one of the few producing on the team so he should get more chances

============

FC Groningen will immediately end the collaboration with Frank Wormuth.

I assume this article on US player development was posted in here.

(Sorry...can't figure out how to link that to my words instead of pasting the whole address)

Thanks for posting Floppo. I think that was just released this morning and you were the first to post it.

That was a fun history lesson of how we got to where we are, from, as they termed it, "the dark ages" I have heard bits and pieces of the story over the years but to have it all in one story makes the story more complete for me.

ok... a couple thoughts, most of which has been covered by you guys already.

No Steffen. Ok. next.... Johnson had a great year and thoroughly deserved this.

Shaq. uh... this is GGG going with a known commodity over other players who are playing better. that said- shaq has looked consistently decent playing under GGG, so what do I (and his other coaches) know. Does he have the edge over Scally as backup? I mean- I doubt Shaq sees a minute.

Morris. I get the idea that he's a different beast than Nips, who is more like other guys on the squad already. but he's looked plodding for club and country this season- vs a spritely and at the top of his game Nips. add Nips' partnership with Jesus, and I think it was an opportunity lost to bank that form and chemistry the way Ream/Jedi might work.

Haji vs Prefok vs Pepi vs Vasquez.
I really didn't see enough of Vasquez to say much about him... highlight packages looked awesome, but of course don't tell the whole picture- especially regarding important defensive capabilities. From what I've seen, I wouldn't have been upset if he had been included (which goes for all of these guys, tbh). Pepi has found his form in Holland. for me... I get GGG"s comments about england style vs holland and that favoring his main competition in Sarge, considering they're both in form. Honestly- I like Pepi least of this group... and I like him fine. Prefok has to be playing well and improved to be doing well in the bundie... still hard for me to get that Mex taste out of my mouth though... but I see him do a lot of nice fox in the box stuff to get those goals. That said- and I'm absolutely a bit of a homer with Haji because I've been watching him since u15s (where he was the best player on the field)- I think Haji brings all of those same abilities that Prefok does being able to score in different ways in and around the box- but I've seen Haji do better showing/holding and being more of a target player (not prototypical though- uses those long legs and body more than strength to win and play balls). I like how he combines too- and I like his history with the core group of young players on this team. I think he could make some noise here with a boxy/foxy goal or two if they're chasing.

I like Roldan a lot- another guy who had a great year for club and country. he's a low ceiling, high floor guy who you know isn't going to **** things up and will be able to provide cover in a lot of areas of the field if needed. I can't imagine a scenario outside of team-wide covid where it will be needed, and don't see him stepping onto the field. because of that, I think this was an opportunity lost to bring Tillman into the fold- a guy with a much lower floor, but glimpses of higher ceiling. another guy that shouldn't ever be seeing the field outside of calamity, so I'm not too turned up about it. but it would've shown other duals that they have a shot... for next time.

CBs... I mean- whatchergunnado? I like EPB probably the most of the group... but as has been said by you guys, none of these guys are going to elevate or diminish vs any of the others in any substantive way, so I'm not too concerned. CCV vs EPB is kind of a tossup... but I think EPB has a bit more pace/anticipation, so I prefer him. Like you all, Long is the worst of the group... but it's not like he's stunk up the joint when playing with Zimm. hasn't lit it up either, but I don't think anybody but Miles has. Happy Ream is there though- and would be interested/terrified to see him start to take advantage of both his reltaionship with Jedi as well as his ability to break lines with the pass.

I agree Moore probably won't see a minute, especially if Dest stays healthy (that comp I posted today was the best he has looked in a long time so he must be feeling great). Moore was playing LB in camp so maybe GGG see's him as an emergency fill-in over there but Scally has much more experience at LB than any on on the team outside of Jedi.

I don't mind the general idea of "profiles" but sometimes I think they work best on teams that are so deep they are choosing between "really" good players to fill roles. For a team like the US, I feel like taking the better players is almost always the right call. Now we all know that Nips is limited but you know exactly what you can expect. My biggest problem with Morris is that he has been FAR from good this year. I stand by my words that I don't care what leagues players come from but if you come from a second tier league, you should be a dominant player in that league to be a national team player. Morris is one, if not two massive knee injuries away from that level. Again, like Moore, I doubt he sees anything more than an ultra late cameo.

Pefok went into a bad slump at the worst time. He lost his spot in Germany. Note that Pepi, according to GGG, was not competing with either Pefok or Haji, he was competing with Jesus and Sargent. I hope what GGG sees in Jesus comes through at this level because I thought in qualifying he was pretty meh during almost every chance he got, but GGG clearly likes him and I won't be shocked if he starts against Wales even if I would rather Sargent start.

I know Roldan got a lot of crap for being picked but he is almost the picture perfect 26th man on the roster IMO. Not only is he experienced (which the young team needs), he plays a ton of spots, and the younger guys have come out with stories of how Roldan helps them, acting almost as another assistant coach (which seems to be his future).

Yup, we all fear Long, but the awful truth is that no one else took the job once Miles got hurt. Richards injury was as big a blow as Miles IMO. GGG has been saying increasingly good things about Ream so I am expecting him to start at least one game in the group stage. Ream solves a lot of our distribution issues, which is something no other CB can do (especially once Brooks went deep into the dog house and then seemingly ended his career with his team choice this summer).

After reading the development article that @El Floppo posted, (@Ned @Ted Lange as your Bartender lots of good things about the Union in that article), I have to say I feel pretty proud of what the country came up with.

It is almost a it cringe worthy to read the other countries who when their boys fail to become pros (which is the vast majority of development kids), they are left with absolutely nothing in life in terms of skills. And yet when our kids fail to become pros, many of them are now getting scholarships to college.

I like how our way has evolved and I also think it is extremely important in our culture where most parents are going to understand that the chances their kid going pro is very small but selling a college degree as a back up I think makes it a ton easier for parents to be willing to place kids in these academies. And as we all know, it is a numbers game, the more kids in, the better chances of pros and hopefully international level players comes out.

I think in the past they've done a draft for squad numbers based on caps so I wouldn't read too much into it just because I think some dgaf and others do. Although I say that and Acosta has 23 which seems an odd choice for a dude with a lot of caps. So maybe there was some assignment here.

I am also surprised Aaronson is 11 vs Gio 7 when BA has more caps but I can also see where Gio really cares about that and Brenden, in order to avoid the stare, just gave in.

FC Groningen will immediately end the collaboration with Frank Wormuth.
The dutch really phrase sacking someone quite nicely. I'll have to use this in the future.

Sorry Floppo, Ima have to let you....er, end our collaboration here. HR will provide you the particulars. Peas and gllll

To be fair, something may have been lost in translation :)
It's like the use of "rupture", which is catastrophic sounding in English, but I think means something more along the lines of strain or slight tear.

hmmm,..

first full training session and neither Jedi or Ream are participating. Jedi riding a bike and Ream jogging on his own away from main squad. They both went 90 on Sunday so this may just be cautionary I hope.

Unreal that we get to Qatar closer to full health than we've been in years, especially given all the injuries in the last 18 months.

(Contractually obligated :crying: for Miles Robinson.)

-------Pulisic Ferreira Reyna
------Weston Adams Musah
Antonee Ream Zimmerman Dest
------------------Turner

Just like we ****ing drew it up boys and girls! LET'S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't 23 Acosta's preferred number? He always seems to have it.

I am pretty sure Dest, Pulisic, Reyna, Weston and Adams may have never started a game together before due to all the injuries.

As unfair as it would be to Aaronson, I agree with your lineup assuming we have to start Jesus. Gio is a difference maker.

If as you said Ferreira is non-negotiable, I'd sooner have Gio and Aaronson start and sit Weston, personally. Still holding out hope for a false 9, but I'd be shocked if it actually happens.

I don't see how we play CP, Jesus, Aaronson and Gio in the same side. Our midfield would get run over.

I think LCB (Ream or Long), #9 (Ferreira or Sargent) and that right wing (Weah, Reyna, Aaronson) are definitely up in the air some.

Would LOVE it if Berhalter had played his cards close to the vest and unveiled CP as a false nine with Aaronson and Reyna/Weah on the wings. But I often imagine beautiful, pleasant things that have no grounding in reality.

I had them same thought - if he did that, I wouldn't even blame him if it didn't work.

The only bright side to Jesus, Sargent and Haji is each provides something a little different - the downside is I'm not sure if you combined their skills in to a single #9 that you would have a player worthy of starting.

this is a great stat but a streak I would not hate to end vs England

In 33 games at the World Cup, the US has never played a goalless draw. That’s more than any other team in the history of the competition.

Gee, you think they would have considered this BEFORE they sent him to a club with no foreign slot openings nearly assuring his lack of aby playing time.

unless he's completely unfit, I'd sit anybody but Swag. has been the best US player for a while... and the only threat on set pieces.

was just texting with a greek former colleague who's an olympiakos fan about him. "very crafty with his feet... but awful".

you know what I find odd is that Jesus is not a traditional striker. He is very much closer to a false 9. As such I am unsure why GGG is so hesitant to use players like Reyna or Pulisic in a similar role when they are clearly better players than Jesus and using them in that role gives the chance for either Aaronson and/or Weah to have a bigger impact on the game with more playing time.

Given the big news coming out of NY today for the new stadium, does any one know if the US has ever played a game in NYC? I know we have played many times in NJ over the border but I can't recall a game in NYC itself....

While we will never play a WC qualifier in NYC (hopefully), I am certain we will see plenty of friendlies and Concacaf controlled games (like Gold Cup) in the new stadium when it is up and running for the 2030 WC cycle.

I don’t subscribe to Wahl’s substack, but he screen-shotted a snippet from today’s article and posted it to Twitter.

He asked Weah if he’s been training as a center forward this week, or if he’s strictly been training as a winger. Weah told him he should ask Berhalter. Would love to see Weah out there at the 9. Probably doesn’t get Aaronson out there to start but there are going to be plenty of minutes to go around for our attacking players.

I think of all our wingers Weah makes the most sense up top - is he fully healthy?

yes, Weah is fully healthy right now (at least coming into camp).

Here is what GGG said about this exact topic a few months ago

@BrianSciaretta

On the call, Gregg Berhalter continues to insist he sees Tim Weah most valuable as a winger and that he sees him for the #USMNT as a striker only in unique situations.

Do we keep posting in this thread once the tourney starts or move everything to the World Cup thread?

post where ever you like. The trolls may be drawn to the WC thread so that could devolve quickly if they are still around.

RIGHT!?!

And CP is pretty crafty in the box too. Maybe not quite a fox, but, like a wolf. Or maybe one of those spotted African Wild Dogs. No, wait. A dingo in the box. A really nimble dingo with good finishing instincts.

If we lose vs Wales I will be on a 4-day hiatus starting maybe 30 minutes after the game. Nothing good is going to happen in here.

And if we don't get out of the group I will likely never visit the WC thread again.

Why? The good thing about events like this is even with the small sample size, we are going to get a good measuring stick of the actual status of the program. As long as the powers that be use that info to improve for ‘26, I’ll be more or less fine with the result since I can envision anything from 3 straight losses to a quarterfinal run.

I can't speak for him, but I think he may be referring to the cesspool the WC thread may devolve into should they lose.

Note though that when I was originally referring to trolls in the WC thread, I was not talking about people who actually like the sport and want to see us succeed and are going to be upset. That is part and parcel.

I was more talking about the couple of dingbats who hate the sport and will come in to the thread, complain about low scoring, diving etc, pretty much acting like it is 1988 still.
