US Men's National Team (26 Viewers)

Missed the game working, just watched the highlights. If our backups are going to dominate like this ours fancy Euros can stay in Euro. Gonna need to schedule some better competition than the Swiss. Switzerland looked awfully slow and disorganized to be ranked 20th. Poch has to feel good about getting a result.
The 2nd half 0-0 tie?
Thought we scored 4. Weren't we in the home whites?

Maybe you should have mixed in an occasional bass with your brews.

I search youtube for highlights about 30 minutes after the game....nada except a Spanish broadcast. Soccer is destined to fall behind Banana Ball in this country.
I couldn't figure out the schtick/sarcasm on this one

Don't we usually wear white?

I am fine with Poch taking some of the blame here but I think it is dangerous to think the second half suddenly fixed the problems when it seemed clear Switzerland naturally took their foot off the gas. For all the talk of matching them in the second half, the US still did not produce a single shot on goal

========================

Mauricio Pochettino:"After a performance like that, it’s difficult to say after 90 minutes that this guy is in or out. We can’t blame the players for that first half. My responsibility is to build the team. It’s my responsibility. It’s not to blame the players. But I think it’s important for young players who have made a debut to see that it’s a high level. You have to give more. With more experienced players in the second half, we matched the opponent. For the Gold Cup, we’ll learn from that and make better decisions in the future."
plus Switz successfully pressed the hell out of the US in the 1st half and CLEARLY took their foot off the pedal in the 2nd. was definitely not apples to apples between the 1st and 2nd halves- even if there wasn't that much player turnover for the swiss.

but the shape at least improved in the 2nd with the influx of better/smarter players. Tillman was the only guy on the field who looked like an actual player at that level. Love Luna's gumption- but he's not there yet against this level of comp. but looking forward to seeing him push himself to get there- I think he will.

I'm not going to rewatch that abomination to check- but it seems to me swiss did their damage from the deep MF (xaka) to the wings, where it was just a complete domination. those aren't Johnny on the spot spots, so maybe- JUST MAYBE- he did his Adams thing positionally and allowed less damage through their attacking part of the middle of the MF. spitballing here.

tbf- I turned the game on about 30 seconds in and saw the US easily powering their way downfield- and got excited, only to realize about a minute later when I saw the first closeup, that it was the Swiss in white. so I'm with you.

A couple things from up thread:

1) Sounds like the 8 second keeper rule will be in place for the Club WC. 8 seconds from when the keeper has control of the ball.

2) Musah to Napoli: Looks like De Bruyne is going to. Not sure what formation they play, or who Musah is now behind, but KdB and McMessi may make it hard for him?

For the second goal, the beauty of a cross field ball and I thought "Where is the US left back?" Then I remembered, he's in London.

As for the rest of the game, just terrible. At one point in the second half I thought maybe the US was playing down a man with the Swiss acting like its a practice.

as bad as Arf was defending that as the LB- and he was genuinely bad- the RB Harriel was even worse on his positioning... unless the intent was to let the man get completely alone 4 yards from the middle of the goal

Did Harriel also get megged at the edge of the box? I think the shot got blocked for a corner following...

Everything about usmnt is depressing right now. I don’t even think I’m excited for the World Cup anymore, I’m assuming it’s going to be a disaster on multiple levels.

you are not wrong to feel the way.

I am hanging on by the slimmest of threads, which is "short form tournaments can be unpredictable for any individual team"

Two+ years ago my hope was a quarter final. Today my hope is get out of the group and pray.

I'm hoping we don't get kicked out before it starts.

Dortmund have officially submitted their roster for the Club World Cup.

Albert, Gio and Campbell are all on it.
Tickets for their opening game at Met Life are dirt cheap - currently start at $38, but I'm guessing by that morning, they're down below $20. Only problem is it's on Tuesday at Noon.
what date?
Next Tuesday (the 17th).

Lowest prices are now $33, including some front row on 2nd level.

Some 1st level seats are now in the high $40s.

Checked my work schedule on Tuesday and I could conceivably go.

Any thoughts on the likelihood of the three Americans playing would be appreciated

Responding to my own question...Dortmund roster for CWC looks pretty strong except for the Americans...so I assume that Campbell and Albert only get in if the game is a blow out. Dortmund is currently -200 tow in against Fluminese...so it's expected to be a competitive game

I am thinking Albert is only there for the experience. I would shocked (but really pumped) if he gets any minutes.

I expect Campbell and Gio to get sporadic sub minutes in the tournament. Campbell was a regular late game sub until he got hurt last season. Gio is Gio...who the hell knows.

Well if we can't have a decent national team, I guess dysfunction is our main source of entertainment.

The "drama" continues with Landon speaking as to why he is the perfect messenger for what he said and discusses his own issues when taking his sabbatical. He takes another shot at Pulisic here. This is clearly just a snippet so I don't know what else was said

I was listening to some of it and his main argument to justify his sabbatical was his age, the amount of games played, and the fact we was contemplating retirement. Also that he stopped playing all soccer and not just skipping a summer.

To me this just made it worse. He simply needs to stop talking.

yeah I agree.

I understand that dysfunction and soccer tend to go hand and hand in many parts of the world (hell, look at how often France has imploded over the years), but it still sucks to watch.

What I found interesting with Pulisic’s interview the other day was he said he wanted to play in the friendlies but was told there could only be one roster for the friendlies and gold cup combined.

That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

In any event it’s been a bad look for him when in that same interview he said he is going to start doing individual training next week. So it doesn’t even sound like he’s resting that much.

I’m with Landon on this one.

This golden generation is the soft generation. These guys have no grit or passion and have not delivered since wet and bumpy which Pulisic was also a part of.

I have absolutely no problem with Christian deciding that another 8 games wouldn't be the best way for him to prepare for a World Cup year. But I think the suggestion that he should be there for the friendlies that are designed to let Poch figure out who he can trust for the tournament and then not be there for the tournament is pretty insane. CP's comment that he respected but "didn't understand" that decision is just weird.

And yes, Donovan's comments are weird considering his history (and his attempts to distinguish the two situations are wacky.)

So Landon's argument is basically: "I was 30 and tired, but you're only 26 so you can't be tired?" LOL.

Landon played 132 games in the 4 full years before his sabatical. Christian has played 112 between club and nation in the last 2 years. A guy who had consistent leg issues for most of his career has played almost as many games in 2 years as Landon did in 4. And Landon was emotionally and physically exhausted after those 4 years. Worst part.... part of Landon's reason for taking a rest was because of all his European loans and all the European travelling he did in those years. He's just not intelligent. There's no way you can have any sort of intelligence and be this terrible at introspection.

As for Christian starting individual workouts? That's not nearly the intensity of a full national team camp. I expect most guys do indivicual work almost every day of the year when they're playing. It's also still about mental rest. Lifting for a few hours and doing some skills workouts doesn't require the absolute focus that a tournament does.

The 4 months he was at Everton is "all his European loans"? The one he had to cut short after calling out Beckham for going on loan at AC Milan to be ready for a WC?

Did I miss another loan?

Yes, but it was 2 separate stints. He also mentioned a lot of the US travelling, which I would assume was much worse than what he had to deal with at Everton.

Yes, travelling in the US is bigger than travelling in England, if going coast to coast. I don't think they did much European travel at Everton.
London to the US and back can be 6-10 hours depending on where the US team played.

Italy to NY is 8-9 hours, to LA is an additional 6.

I get it, media needs to talk, and drive clicks and commentary, but at some point there has to be some sense.

I don't need the 99ers talking about Hope Solo. Or LD talking about Klinsmann.
There is just to much bias and one sided views. Its dead and gone, stop it.

And really I don't need to hear from LD or Lalas on any topic. But that's a different story.

I don't know if the Bayern stint under Klinsmann (before he got the US job) was a loan or what.

Wasn't his time in Germany while young and before he came back to the MLS?

Leverkeusen bought him after the U17 World Cup. And Leverkeusen loaned him to the Earthquakes for a few years. He tried again at Leverkeusen, and then signed with the Galaxy. He then had three European loan spells with the Galaxy. Bayern in 2009, Everton in 2010, and Everton again in 2012.

Thanks.

I did not realize his SJ time was a loan. Interesting. I do remember him playing well for Everton on one of the loans. But he had to return to LA because he had made such a big deal out of Beckham's loan to AC Milan and couldn't then extend his stay. He really has shot himself in the foot so many times.

There was also something specific he said that caught my ear.

When he said why he was not allowed to play in the friendlies and skip the Gold Cup, I believe he said something like "The federation wanted all or nothing for the summer".

I found it interesting that he did not say it was what Poch wanted. Maybe that is what he meant but Pulisic does not usually mince words.

Yes it definitely sounded like a federation decision and not a coach decision. For some reason I think it would have sat a lot better for me if it was Poch and not the federation but I am just trying to shift my mindset to get ready to root for whoever is out there on Sunday against the wet and bumpies.

Sound like the recent news is Pulisic wanted to play the friendlies but not the gold cup. Poch said "thanks but no thanks". I'm ok with that. At least he (and we) are seeing who shouldn't be getting pt.

Poch did not mince any words

1) He clearly stated it was his decision (this was likely to counter Pulisic saying it was the feds decision)

2) He took a shot at Pulisic by saying no player can ever be allowed to dictate the plan.

3) He was confused (as were most of us) as to why Pulisic could not understand the decision to not let him only play the friendlies.

I was hoping for 4 separate things from this summer:

1) To watch Dest and Jedi play in the system - missed out on both

2) To hope that Steffen can take over the #1 spot from Turner - very untimely injury to Steffen negated this

3) Hope that one player (my expectation was McKenzie) would seize the spot next to Richards - jury is out but the first two games did not give a lot of hope

4) Hope that one other player (my expectation was Luna) would emerge to be a solid rotation and maybe even spot starter for the full team. Jury is out, but Luna did not shine in the first two games IMO.

1. This is annoying, but I feel like Arfston and Freeman have shown themselves to be potential backup options and will likely be top of the backup FB list if they perform in the Gold Cup.

2. Moot point if Turner becomes Lyon's starter IMO. That was the biggest issue was that Turner wasn't getting any game time.

3. Sigh.

4. I would put Tillman here. I know he already got spot starts, but after the two friendlies, I'd put him in that third midfielder spot as the #1 there. I also hope Luna shows us more in the Gold Cup. Hoping one of the strikers grabs that spot emphatically too.

Re: 4... I think Tillman is the only player that elevated himself to starter contention. He looked and played every bit the class level and confidence we want from our starters. Luna brought the confidence, but needs more time to raise his game to the speed of play required in this top 30 level.

I thought Makenzie looked ok.. until turning into a ghost defending 1v1 on that 2nd or 3rd Swiss goal.

1. This is annoying, but I feel like Arfston and Freeman have shown themselves to be potential backup options and will likely be top of the backup FB list if they perform in the Gold Cup.
Jury still out on both. Arfsten looks better when he's not expected to defend much. He's really a winger playing FB. And that can be okay, especially when we played 3 at the back. From what I've seen, Tolkin is a better overall player if we are playing 4 atb. But it's early days for both in their USMNT career and we'll see how they settle in. Others like Wiley or even Peyton Miller may emerge but the fact that Dest can shift to left back may mean none of them are on the WC Roster honestly.

On Freeman, I'm unsure. He got less than zero help from McGlynn so I was more positive on his appearance given that. He should get his chances given Harriel is probably the weakest player on the roster.

2. Moot point if Turner becomes Lyon's starter IMO. That was the biggest issue was that Turner wasn't getting any game time.
Turner has been bad with his feet regardless of whether he has been playing. I think pairing him with someone like Zimmerman resulted in pretty bad distribution at the back. I'm not convinced, but Steffen has not inspired confidence either.

I think McKenzie is a lot more competent when there is leadership around him. He was much better with Ream next to him. Can Richards provide that? Can Adams?

It seems ledership is a big reason we suffer at the back and why, even if he's well past it, we seem to be more solid with Ream back there. I really hope one outcome from the Gold Cup is Richards seizes this role because otherwise it's likely to be a comedy of errors.

4. I would put Tillman here. I know he already got spot starts, but after the two friendlies, I'd put him in that third midfielder spot as the #1 there. I also hope Luna shows us more in the Gold Cup. Hoping one of the strikers grabs that spot emphatically too.
Tillman has been great. Not surprisingly he was the only player with a positive rating vs Switzerland.

I would point out that the only starters that were even adequate were Paxten and Sullivan who were both pulled at the half. Every other starter had FotMob ratings in the 5s and many of them got the benefit of the 2nd half where we played a bit better (inflating their ratings). Every single player that came on in the 2nd half was in the 6s.

Anyway, those are the two along with Luna that I'd like to see more of to determine if they can help this side. They bring energy and confidence even as most of the players around them were cratering. And I'm curious how they'd do with a more competent group around them.

I'd probably say of this roster, the lineup I'd like to see is

Freese
Tolkin - McKenzie - Richards - Freeman
Adams - Paxten
Luna - Tillman - Sullivan
Downs?

I'm not that interested in seeing any more of White or Harriel at all. Probably Seb as well but it's probably not fair to only play him one game. He just looked out of place (he actually had the worst rating of the Swiss game which is a pretty big statement given Harriel).

I don't know what to do with Johnny. I keep thinking he'll find his place like Tillman has started to do but ffs, he's awful. I just don't see how McGlynn fits in. He probably will crush vs the weak sides in this tourney but he's a huge liability out of possession. He's probably a nice to have specialty sub. Aug and Wright kind of are what they are. I'd be pretty worried if either is on the WC Roster but I guess we'll give them more chances.

You're higher on Quinn than I am.. I wasn't impressed with either of his outings. But tbh, I felt like he grew into the 2nd game a little.

I don't even remember Paxton out there tbh.

LB Tolkin and RB Freeman flip in your lineup.

I still hold onto hope that Johnny is doing something 6-worthy good off camera, so would replace Pax with him next to Adams. I've seen him much better with the ball on dribble and pass for Betis... Granted, Antony and Isco aren't around this squad, so ymmv. Might bump Tillman to the left, Luna in the middle and Pax on the right. We're talking about Pa lx and not Brenden, right?

Id roll with Ag up front. Too sloppy for my liking, but the upside of his runs and strength getting to and winning the spot (not a strength holding it once gets the ball) outweigh White and the little I've seen of Downs in 1 game for club and half a game for country.
