US Men's National Team (18 Viewers)

We're talking about Pax and not Brenden, right?
I think we know what we have in Brendan. He's an end of roster guy and a coach's dream because he works his butt off. But he's already had 48 USMNT caps.

Brenden may well make the WC Roster and I'd have no issues with it if no one can take it from him, but we pretty much know what we have in him. Brendan has already gotten a ton of chances because of the lost generation. The goal of a roster like this is to see who can level up and the more Brendan plays, the fewer chances others get.

Completely agree about Brendan v Pax. But he's also a Poch prototype with his "grit" and determination outweighing the rest of his game. Imo, if he's on the field the US is in trouble with deep injury problems...and I like the kid, but exactly so- we know what his upside is against top teams.

Just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same/right Aaronson.

Starting XI is out. Only surprise to me was Arfsten still being in it. Looks something like this, though I don't know exactly how the AMs will shape up.

Freese
Freeman Richards Ream Arfstan
LDT
Sebb Tillman Luna
Ag
that is missing someone...that is only 10 players

hopefully missing Adams
nope, I guess Adams must still be hurt. McGlynn is the missing player
Adams still nicked. Johnny apparently ill.

Nice 1st half. Moves ball quickly, took advantage of copious awful play from TT.

And we're back to amateurish play by the US in the 2nd half with bad giveaway, poor positioning, poor touches.

Tillman is our best player. Luna played well. Ag is a handful but has a donkey touch. McGlynn disappeared in the 2h. Not sure if he was gassed or what. I've now seen enough of Seb to say he's not up to it. Richards was good. Freeman got skinned once but was fine overall. Arfsten looks okay when no one ever expects him to defend but he really should have scored a goal in his handful of chances.

Good first half, not a great second but that some times happens with big leads. Hate to see them get sloppy for no reason though.

So far, Turkey and T&T have been well played games. Let’s hope the Switzerland game was the outlier.

Freeman... Had another poor positioning moment on an inlet pass (something I mentioned last time) that would've been really bad against a better team. Got skinned and had at least one shockingly bad pass right above the US box too... But also defended well outside of that and moved the ball pretty well. Nice to see him get forward as well.

I don't know if Mex or CAN brought full teams, but those of them destroy this US squad if they keep making this many individual mistakes. Jamaica probably as well.

Mexico brought a strong squad based on the line up last night,

But even with that, they barely beat minnow Dominican Republic 3-2, after almost coughing up a 3-0 lead.

1st half... I liked how quickly and direct the US played. The space was gaping for them, and they took advantage. Also tidy with the ball for the most part. A lot worked with Luna showing back and guys making runs in behind him. With souch time and space, most of the US players had good games in the first half. Ag.. I guess he is what he is. Good runs, inconsistent touch and use of his body.

2nd half was slow, sloppy and would've been punished by a better team. 3-0 lead.. should've been built on by doing more of what they did in the 1st half, but looked like they were doing everything they could to crap it away.

I'm trying to think of players that grabbed my attention...
Tillman- just a head above anybody else.
Richards- hard to say vs such weak opposition, but clearly looks like he belongs on the 1st team.

Luna, Freeman, Freese, Arf, Jack, Ag...sure..still want to see more.

Haiti are big, strong and fast. Play an aggressive press pretty well too. Going to be a tough opponent for the US given how sloppy they are on the ball, and how relatively small they are.

Haiti's #20 (playing the 9) is a mountain. Ag could learn a thing or two watching how he works.

but damn- despite all the pressing and putting Saudi in problems, Haiti's final touch has been abysmal. so many shots, so many crosses, so many corners- very little trouble for the Saudi GK.
And yet... the Saudi GK is a complete mess around the box, and especially trying to read through balls.

Saudi don't look great under pressure- but they seem like they have the players to finish a good move forward.

and just like that- a great break for Haiti, and that big #20 keeps his run ahead of the line and his goal is called back correctly for offsides.

I know we are not really paying attention to Concacaf qualifying, but here are the final groups. Group winners advance to the WC next summer.

Group A: Panama, ELS, Guat, Suriname

Group B : Jam, Curaçao, T&T, Bermuda

Group C: Costa Rica, Honduras, Haiti, Nicaragua

It feels like that’s been Haiti forever. They’re stacked with players developed in France, so they are always talented. But the Fédération is a mess. They can never train together effectively. And they always look naive.

I can't even imagine what they go through at a federation level, given everything that country has gone through since I've been alive.

I've always enjoyed watching them play- but from an on-the-field standpoint, they've always got a few guys who are really good, and then the drop-off gets pretty steep. I feel like they get undone as much by that- amateur sloppiness and naivete- as by the expected lack of cohesion.

This squad looked really good though- put Saudi through the absolute ringer with their press and movement on and off the ball, plus ability on the ball. But the entire team suffered from the Nagbe heat map and despite getting into great spots, would fluff the cross or shot.

I don't know if that's typical of this group of players, or just a collective unlucky night. Either way, they looked a threat to the US- more than Saudi (who have a mini-me Giroud look alike for you)

All three Americans are on the bench for Dortmund, as expected
5 subs, none of them Gio or the other yanks... In a 0-0 draw.

We all knew it would happen, but still really lame.

They really needed all 3 of them when none of them are gonna get meaningful time?

Stupid.

Will be interesting to see what level Albert gets to next year. Does he stick with their youth teams again all year or is there potential for him to go out to a BL2 team next year and maybe see some minutes? Are you even allowed to send 16 year olds out on loan?

You have a good question.

Dortmund is not shy about blooding really young players if they look up to it. I am not sure Albert will be ready in the fall, but there is an outside chance if his development curve continues he could get called up after the winter break.

Gio is still the head scratcher for me... what is gained by staying- for him or the club- if he's behind the new guys like Jobe and not going to play.

get him a loan or sale and let's move on.
